Country Profile

Tanzania Safari: the country with the highest density of wildlife in Africa

A Tanzania Safari runs through the three big parks of the north and two small ones hardly anyone names. The Serengeti covers 14,763 km², almost the size of Northern Ireland, and around 1.5 million wildebeest and 250,000 zebras circle through it every year. The Ngorongoro Crater measures 260 km² and carries about 25,000 large mammals on that floor, the Big Five among them in a single day. Tarangire has the densest elephant herds in East Africa in the dry season, and Lake Manyara next door has lions that sleep in acacia trees.

Our six tours link these parks over 7 to 24 days. The shortest is a 7-day camping safari through Tarangire, Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Manyara with at most 12 guests. The most popular takes 10 days, joins Serengeti and Ngorongoro with Zanzibar and costs 2,699 €. In 14 days you travel from Zanzibar across the Serengeti to the Masai Mara, or in 24 days from the Okavango Delta to the Indian Ocean. The south with Nyerere, Ruaha and Katavi is on none of the group tours; we plan it on request.

Four tours travel in an overland truck with up to 20 guests, two privately in a Toyota Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof for at most 7 or 12. The guide speaks English, and the driver-guides on the two Land Cruiser safaris are multilingual. You sleep in a lodge or in a tent, depending on the tour. The price covers guide, vehicle, accommodation, most meals and the park fees, which at 70 to 80 US dollars per person and day are the biggest single item in Tanzania.

Lodge or camping

How you travel on this safari

On four of our six Tanzania tours you sit in a 4x4 overland truck with up to 20 guests, every seat at a window, with the game drives in Serengeti and Ngorongoro in an open safari vehicle. The other two travel privately in a Toyota Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof, with at most 7 or 12 guests. The guide speaks English, and on the two Land Cruiser safaris the driver-guide is multilingual. Game drives start at sunrise and end in the late afternoon, with lunch and the drive between parks in between.

You choose between two ways to sleep. The lodge safari puts you in solid houses on the crater rim and in the Serengeti, with a bed, a shower and dinner at a table. The camping safari sleeps in a tent inside the park, the crew pitches and cooks, and you hear the hyenas at night. On the truck tours the lodge option costs 300 to 600 € more than camping. The 9-day Land Cruiser tour is a pure lodge safari, the 7-day one a pure camping safari.

Physically a safari asks little: you sit a lot, walk little and get up early. Driving days between the parks take 3 to 5 hours on corrugated dirt roads. If you have back problems, say so before booking and we plan longer breaks. Park fees are in the price, tips for guide and crew are not; allow about 10 US dollars a day.

Who it suits

For anyone who can get up early and watch for hours. No safari experience needed. On the truck tours you travel with up to 20 guests, on the Land Cruiser safaris with at most 7 or 12.

Where you sleep

Lodge with bed and shower on the crater rim and in the Serengeti, or a tent inside the park with a crew that pitches and cooks. On Zanzibar a hotel in Stone Town and on the beach.

Vehicle and legs

4x4 overland truck between the parks, open safari vehicle or Land Cruiser with pop-up roof on the game drives. 3 to 5 hours of dirt road between parks, 6 to 8 hours of game drive inside them.

A day on safari

Wake-up 5:30, game drive from sunrise, breakfast in the bush, midday break 12 to 3 pm, second game drive until sunset, dinner at 7 pm.

Regions and parks

Safari regions in Tanzania

From the Serengeti over the Ngorongoro Crater to the beaches of Zanzibar: Tanzania packs its highlights into a few regions. Here is which of them you can see together on one safari.

Serengeti National Park: the Great Migration
Serengeti

Serengeti National Park: the Great Migration

14,763 km² of grassland, a national park since 1951 and World Heritage since 1981. Around 1.5 million wildebeest circle through it: calving in the south from January to March, Mara crossings in the north from July to October. Around Seronera in the centre, lions and leopards stay at the river all year. Five of our six tours drive the Serengeti, mostly with 2 nights inside the park.

Best time to go

June to October, January to February

Landscape

Short-grass plains, kopjes, acacia woodland

Ngorongoro

Ngorongoro Crater: the Big Five in one day

The crater floor measures 260 km², lies 600 metres below the rim and carries about 25,000 large mammals, including around 30 black rhinos. From the rim at 2,300 metres you drive down in the morning, and a vehicle may stay 6 hours on the crater floor. Maasai still graze their cattle in the conservation area. Five of our six tours drive the crater, each on a full day.

Best time to go

all year, driest from June to October

Landscape

Tarangire and Lake Manyara: baobabs and tree lions
Tarangire & Manyara

Tarangire and Lake Manyara: baobabs and tree lions

The two small parks at the start of the northern circuit. Tarangire covers 2,850 km², and in the dry season from July to October herds of more than 100 elephants stand at the Tarangire River, with 550 bird species around them. Lake Manyara is a soda lake with flamingos and lions that sleep in acacias. On the 7-day camping safari and the 9-day lodge safari, Tarangire is the first game drive after Arusha.

Best time to go

July to October, drivable all year

Landscape

Baobab savannah, swamp, groundwater forest

Zanzibar: the Indian Ocean after the savannah
Zanzibar

Zanzibar: the Indian Ocean after the savannah

The island lies 40 km off Dar es Salaam, and Stone Town has been World Heritage since 2000. Four of our six tours include Zanzibar: two begin there with Stone Town and the spice tour, two end there on the beach at Nungwi. The ferry from Dar es Salaam takes 2 hours, the flight from Arusha 90 minutes. Since 2024 Zanzibar requires its own travel insurance of 44 US dollars.

Best time to go

June to October, December to February

Landscape

Beach, reef, old-town alleys

Across the border

Across the border: Masai Mara and Okavango Delta

Two tours see Tanzania as part of a longer route. The 14-day overland safari begins on Zanzibar, drives Ngorongoro and Serengeti and crosses into Kenya to the Masai Mara and Lake Nakuru. The 24-day tour starts in Johannesburg, drives the Okavango Delta, Chobe, Victoria Falls, South Luangwa and Lake Malawi, and reaches Tanzania on day 18, with Mikumi National Park and Zanzibar at the end.

Best time to go

June to October

Landscape

Nyerere, Ruaha and Katavi: the south without the traffic
The south

Nyerere, Ruaha and Katavi: the south without the traffic

Southern Tanzania is bigger than the north and almost empty: Nyerere National Park on the Rufiji with over 30,000 km² and boat safaris, Ruaha with around a tenth of all the lions in Africa, and Katavi, where hundreds of hippos share one waterhole in the dry season. None of our group tours drives the south; we plan a safari there on request.

Best time to go

June to October, Katavi August to October

Landscape

Miombo woodland, river landscapes

Booking questions
Which national parks do I see on a Tanzania Safari?
Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater on five of the six tours, Tarangire and Lake Manyara on the two Land Cruiser safaris, Mikumi on the 24-day route. The south with Nyerere, Ruaha and Katavi is on none of the group tours; we plan it on request.
How long does a Tanzania Safari take?
Our tours run 7 to 24 days. 7 days are enough for Tarangire, Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Manyara, 10 days for Serengeti, Ngorongoro and Zanzibar. Three nights in the Serengeti are the minimum if you want to look for the herds.
Do I travel in a group or privately?
Four tours are guided group tours in an overland truck with fixed dates and up to 20 guests. The 7-day camping safari and the 9-day lodge safari travel privately in a Land Cruiser from 2 people on your own dates.
What language does the guide speak?
The guide speaks English. On the two Land Cruiser safaris the driver-guide is multilingual; ask before booking which languages your date gets. There is a briefing every evening, and the wildlife watching itself needs no language.
How fit do I need to be for a safari in Tanzania?
Not very. You watch the animals from the vehicle, hardly walk and get up early. Driving days between the parks take 3 to 5 hours on corrugated dirt roads. Walking safaris and Kilimanjaro have their own requirements.
When is the best time for a Tanzania Safari?
June to October is the dry season: short grass, animals at the waterholes, the wildebeest herds in the northern Serengeti. Late January to February is calving season in the south. April and May bring the long rains, and some camps close. The truck tours depart every two weeks from September to December, the two Land Cruiser safaris on your own dates.
Do I need a visa and vaccinations for Tanzania?
Visa yes, 50 US dollars, online or on arrival. Yellow fever only if you arrive from a yellow fever area, malaria prophylaxis recommended. We send you the current entry rules with your booking confirmation.
Will I see the Great Migration?
That depends on the month. From December to March the herds are in the southern Serengeti, in June they move through the west, from July to October they stand in the north on the Mara. Our Serengeti tours drive to wherever the herds are at that time. A river crossing cannot be booked, only the closeness to one.
Lodge or camping: which suits me?
Lodge means a bed, a shower and dinner at a table; camping means a tent with a mattress inside the park, a crew that cooks, and hyenas within earshot. On the truck tours camping is 300 to 600 € cheaper than the lodge option. For families and a first safari we advise the lodge; anyone who has slept outdoors before takes the camp.
Can I combine the safari with Zanzibar?
Yes, four of our six Tanzania tours include Zanzibar: two begin in Stone Town, two end on the beach. The flight from Arusha to Zanzibar takes 90 minutes, the ferry from Dar es Salaam 2 hours. If you book a tour without Zanzibar, you add the island as an extension and we book hotel and flight. Since 2024 Zanzibar requires its own travel insurance of 44 US dollars.
How big is the group?
On the four truck tours up to 20 guests, and the group departs from 4 or 6 people. The 9-day lodge safari travels with at most 7 guests in a Land Cruiser, the 7-day camping safari with at most 12, both from 2 people on the dates you choose.
What is included in the price?
Guide and driver, vehicle, overnight stays, most meals, filtered drinking water and all park fees. Not included are flights, visa, travel health insurance, tips and optional activities such as the balloon flight over the Serengeti for around 600 US dollars.
