The Uganda Rwanda Burundi motorcycle safari takes you through three East African countries in 22 days. On this Uganda gorilla tracking motorbike tour, you will meet mountain gorillas in Bwindi National Park, ride along Lake Kivu and watch chimpanzees in the rainforest.
The Journey
Rwanda
Rwanda is where your Uganda Rwanda Burundi motorcycle safari begins: arrival in Kigali and your first kilometres towards the Burundian border.
Welcome to your Uganda Rwanda Burundi motorcycle safari! We will collect you from Kigali airport and take you to your hotel. There, you will meet your multilingual tour guide and the rest of the group, discuss the itinerary for the coming weeks and enjoy your first evening together as you prepare for an adventure through three East African countries.
Burundi
Burundi takes your East Africa motorcycle safari along off-road tracks and lakeside roads all the way to Bujumbura, with a rest day on Lake Tanganyika.
On your Gorilla Tracking Uganda motorcycle journey, we ride out of Kigali towards the border and cross into Burundi. The route takes us past beautiful lakes all the way to the town of Kirunda, where we spend our first night on Burundian soil and unwind by the water after a day’s ride.
In the morning, we ride to Ngozi and stop there for lunch. Afterwards, this East Africa motorcycle safari takes us through lush mountain regions towards Gitega. The constant change between off-road sections and main roads lets you discover Burundi, bend by bend.
The day on this East Africa motorcycle safari begins with an off-road stage through Burundi’s mountains, passing remote villages and backyards. After a lunch break in Butare, we reach Lake Tanganyika, one of Africa’s largest and deepest lakes, stretching across Tanzania, the Congo, Burundi and Zambia.
Along a coastal road by the lake and scenic off-road tracks around the Monge Forest Reserve, we approach Bujumbura. The lakeside capital of Burundi is the perfect place to reflect on this East Africa motorcycle safari. We spend two nights here and take a well-earned rest.
Today you are free to spend the day as you wish. Take time to visit the lake, tend to your gear and recharge for the second half of your Gorilla Tracking Uganda motorcycle journey. In the afternoon, the multilingual tour guide offers an optional ride which you can join if you fancy.
Rwanda
Back in Rwanda, this Rwanda motorcycle safari takes you past Lake Kivu and through Nyungwe National Park on the way to the volcanic region.
Heading back towards Rwanda, we cross Burundi’s only lowland. The border crossing is swift as the bikes return to their home country. This Rwanda motorcycle safari finishes today in the border town of Cyangugu on the edge of Lake Kivu, where we spend the night overlooking the water.
In the morning, our Rwanda motorcycle safari takes us into Nyungwe National Park, where we spot various monkey species and abundant birdlife along the route. Afterwards, we return on winding roads to Lake Kivu, whose geologically unique landscape lies within the East African Rift Valley.
Riding along the lake, we enjoy spectacular views before joining the world-famous Congo Nile Trail into Rwanda’s volcanic region. This challenging section of the Rwanda motorcycle journey is especially twisty, so the support vehicle takes an easier route here.
Uganda
Uganda is the stage for the Gorilla Tracking Uganda motorcycle journey: Bwindi National Park, Queen Elizabeth National Park, and the lakes Mburo and Bunyonyi.
Heading towards Uganda, the roads become twisty again, passing another lake before reaching the border. Via an off-road Uganda motorcycle journey over volcanic rock, we reach the edge of Bwindi National Park, home to around 460 mountain gorillas, nearly half the world’s population. Here, we prepare for trekking.
Today is all about the Gorilla Tracking Uganda motorcycle journey. Early in the morning, trackers search for gorilla families and record their GPS locations. Then, guides and rangers lead our group through the dense forest to one of the three families. Only eight visitors are allowed per day, and time with the gorillas is limited to one hour.
Questions about the tour itinerary?
Our tour guide is happy to answer any questions about the day-by-day route, stops, and details.
This off-road stage of the Gorilla Tracking Uganda motorcycle journey takes us over a mountain range into a hilly area by Lake Edward, where Queen Elizabeth National Park begins. Expect to see wildlife along the park’s unpaved roads. We spend the night at a crater lake in a local eco-lodge with a campsite.
In the morning, there’s the option for a Uganda chimpanzee motorcycle journey: a walk leads to a rarely visited population you’ll hear from afar. Alternatively, take a boat trip on the Kazinga Channel between Lake Edward and Lake George, spotting crocodiles, buffalo and elephants. The route crosses the Equator.
This stage of the East Africa motorcycle safari takes us through central Uganda, first along Kibale National Park and past several crater lakes. On a clear day, you can see the Rwenzori Mountains in the distance. Passing tea plantations and banana fields, we reach the trading town of Mubende.
Between tarmac and gravel, this off-road Uganda motorcycle journey takes us through villages and fields of tea, coffee, bananas and cassava. At Lake Mburo National Park, it’s time for more wildlife watching: zebras, buffalo and giraffes roam the open savannah around the lake.
The day starts with a long off-road section towards Mbarara, followed by tarmac and another gravel stretch near the Tanzanian border. At over two thousand metres, this East Africa motorcycle safari finally brings us to our accommodation overlooking Lake Bunyonyi.
In the morning, you have a choice: sleep in, go canoeing, take a walk through the village or visit the Batwa community. If you still have the urge to ride, join the multilingual tour guide for an extra loop and discover even more of the region’s national parks on this Uganda motorcycle journey.
Rwanda
At the end, your Uganda Rwanda Burundi motorcycle safari takes you back through Rwanda, past Akagera National Park and on to Kigali.
We cross the border from Uganda back into Rwanda and soon leave the main road. This Rwanda motorcycle safari takes us through tea plantations in the north of the country to the smaller town of Nyagatare, which gives its name to the province. We spend the night here.
We continue south through Rwanda, passing through warmer, lower-lying regions. Part of this Rwanda motorcycle safari follows gravel roads along Akagera National Park, where lions have been reintroduced since 2015 and white rhinos since 2021.
Today you go on a classic safari through savannah, forest and wetlands, with the chance to spot lions, rhinos and elephants. If you prefer, swap the game drive for a half-day Rwanda motorcycle safari in the local area, or simply explore on your own and relax.
The final riding stage of this Uganda Rwanda Burundi motorcycle safari takes us back to Kigali, our starting point. By the hotel pool, we look back on the past weeks over a cold beer and celebrate the end of a long journey through three countries.
At the end of your Uganda Rwanda Burundi motorcycle safari, you have time to explore Kigali on your own, perhaps visiting the Genocide Memorial or the famous Hôtel des Mille Collines. Your multilingual tour guide will give you tips in advance before we take you to the airport in the afternoon or evening.
