The Journey

Experience the north of Tanzania by motorcycle off-road

A motorcycle tour of about 3000 kilometers through Tanzania, where you will travel the northern part of Tanzania off-road and on-road in groups of 4 or more. Dates can therefore be customized starting from four motorcyclists. The journey begins in Arusha, the fourth largest city in Tanzania and home to the International Criminal Court for the genocide in Rwanda. The daily stages are designed to be well-balanced, so that they have a light difficulty level for enduro riders, which we can gladly increase interactively on tour. Highlights of the motorcycle tour through Tanzania include: The Indian Ocean, with its crystal clear water and white sandy beaches. The Maasai Steppe with its endless expanses. The Tarangire National Park with its diversity of flora and fauna. The "insider tip" is the Maziwe Marine Reserve with its variety of marine life. The small but fine bush camps, motels, and lodges. Delicious Tanzanian 2-4 course meals on the motorcycle adventure trip. Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa at 5895 m, where snow can be seen at its summit at any time of the year. The view of the Eastern Arc Mountains, which include the Pare Mountains and the Usambara Mountains, where the famous Usambara violet is native.

Intercontinental flight to Tanzania: Arrival in Arusha

Hello! Welcome - Welcome to Tanzania! We will be picked up from Kilimanjaro International Airport in Moshi and taken to our accommodation in Arusha. The arrival day in Africa is intended as a "chill out day" before we embark on the motorcycle trip through Tanzania the next morning.

1. Start date for the Tanzania motorcycle trip: From Arusha & Kilimanjaro via Marangu to Lake Chala

After breakfast, we will be picked up and taken to the starting point of our motorcycle tour through Tanzania. This morning we will ride the first kilometers on the motorcycle, both off-road and on-road, past pine forests and waterfalls in the region near "Ngarenanyuki", where the Meru people live, and have a snack "on the way." With a bit of luck, we will see the first herds of giraffes and buffaloes on our way to our day's destination, and with a lot of luck, the first elephants. We will ride with Kilimanjaro behind us, passing the village of Kamwanga, where we can make a short "tea stop" and have a good view at the foot of Kilimanjaro with impressive sights of the mountain. Around noon, we will pass the well-known starting point for climbing Kilimanjaro - the Marangu Route, which is also known as the Coca-Cola Route. Further towards Lake Chala, from where we will have a beautiful view of the Kibo and Mawenzi peaks of Kilimanjaro, we may be able to spot mountain primates, such as the black-and-white colobus monkeys or the diademed monkeys (claw monkeys). Our accommodation today will be tents. Our day's destination is Lake Chala, where British explorer E.S. Georgan allegedly "released" crocodiles, which was a failed venture due to the lack of sand and thus nesting areas. By now, there are no more crocodiles in Lake Chala, which you can happily try out during a swim in the lake. If there are still any, you'll be the first to know ;- Participants who do not want to share the adventure can enjoy the evening at the lodge with a sundowner.

From Lake Chala to Same

This morning we explore off-road the eastern Pare Mountains after breakfast, which, with its uniqueness and the animal and plant species found only here, has the status of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve for Tanzania. From Lake Chala, we ride through the well-known village of Kifaru (Swahili: Rhino) over the highlands of the Pare Mountains through three districts of Tanzania, where we will finally "drive in" at the Elephant Motel in the last district of Same. From our lodge today, we have a spectacular view of the South Pare Mountains and the gateway to Mkomazi National Park as well as the South Pare Mountains and the Shengena Forest. We end the evening, as always, with the impressive view while enjoying a sundowner.

From Same to the Lushoto Highlands

From Same to the Lushoto Highlands

For us, it goes off-road on the motorcycle up into the Tanga region. The ride to Lushoto, which was called "Wilhelmstal" during the German colonial period, will be incredibly wonderful! The view on this side road through the “Switzerland of Africa” is breathtakingly beautiful. The term for this area has also been called "the Eastern Arc" since 1985, which refers to the forest-covered crystalline-like mountains in Eastern Tanzania and southeastern Kenya, influenced by the climate of the Indian Ocean. The Eastern Arc Mountains are the mountain ranges in East Africa that stretch from Tanzania to Kenya and boast a legendary biological diversity and unique ecosystems due to the multitude of endemic plant and rare animal species. The Eastern Arc Mountains play an important role in conserving biodiversity and contribute to global significance for conservation. The Germans discovered the charm of Usambara at the end of the 19th century, where we will settle into our small lodge and be treated to a delicious dinner. Depending on the course of the tour, we may still have time during the day to visit the Amani Biosphere Reserve, which has preserved a unique flora and fauna due to its seclusion; we will just let ourselves drift and enjoy the best time of the year on this tour.

4th Day of Slowdown: Lushoto

4th Day of Slowdown: Lushoto

In the small town of Lushoto in the Usambara Mountains lies the village of Mambo, the residents and community are characterized by a strong connection to nature and a harmonious coexistence, which can be described as extraordinary. The traditionally agrarian way of life and economy of the Mambo "community" mainly consists of subsistence farming, in which staple foods such as maize, beans, cassava, and bananas are grown on the above-average fertile soils, and occasionally livestock such as cows, goats, and chickens are kept, which would receive the "super triple seal organic tenfold" in Europe ;-) During the colonial period, the area was part of German East Africa with a not insignificant position in the trade of ivory and slaves; what remains from the dark colonial times are the architectural remnants of German settlements with historic buildings. Since independence in 1961, agriculture and we as travelers have been the most important economic sectors, meaning: There are many reasons to linger here for a day and imprint the clichéd TIA (this is Africa) scenery of the Usambara Mountains onto the hard drive between your ears. It should be a day in Africa that you should enjoy with time and curiosity, or you can simply hang out in the lodge.

5. Motorcycle travel day: From Lushoto to the Maasai Steppe

5. Motorcycle travel day: From Lushoto to the Maasai Steppe

The motorcycle group starts the engines and we go downhill, from the "highlight" of the Tanzania motorcycle trip down to sea level, on the way on and off-road on beautiful challenging sandy tracks near Pangani. Depending on the interactive routing / travel itinerary, there is a small tour into the history of Tanzania depending on the weather and interaction of the motorcycle group, including a visit to an Arab fort at the mouth of the Pangani River, where fresh and saltwater mix into brackish water. The local guide shows us the area from the fish market to the boat builder. In the night in the bush, you will experience the African wilderness differently. Dinner is prepared on a typical African basis, the sundowner is around the campfire that represents what an enduro rider imagines about riding motorcycles and adventure travel in Africa, and can try to keep up with the Maasai in a jump/dance. A must for every motorcyclist who wants to embarrass themselves in front of their bike buddies 😉 Your time and your experiences are the most valuable in life, which you should enjoy to the fullest on this “motorcycle round trip”!

For our enduro travelers, besides adventure, the fascinating African nature still offers a "treat". Today it is a joint project: The Mswakini School Project that we will visit and you might once again become aware of the "luxury of education" we live in Europe. We travel, more or less at a decelerated speed, through the ecosystem of Tarangire and Manyara. The Maramboi Tented Camp offers an endless view of hilly golden grasslands and palm-fringed islands between Tarangire and Lake Manyara. A visit, a must for anyone interested in the evolution and origins of humanity, let your tour guide explain the Rift Valley to better understand the tectonic structure of Tanzania and Africa. We design the two days a bit relaxed and use our camp as a base for a game drive in Tarangire National Park. Anyone who wishes can actively contribute to the Mswakini School Project to support the local community. As we know, education is the key to a better world, which we are allowed to experience "still" on our travels.

From Tarangire - Manyara Ecosystem to Lake Eyasi

After a fancy and delicious Tanzanian breakfast, we start the enduros and roll on the worn-out knobby tires along the majestic rift valley to the Hadza community, which is a group of hunters and gatherers in East and South Africa. If we are "decent," the Hadza will welcome us in their traditional habitat and we may have the opportunity to hunt with them in their traditional way at sunset.

Along the blades of gravel paradise (the words of an enduro rider), we travel with the motorcycle group into the endless vastness of the Maasai savannahs. The goal of the day: the Engaruka Women Empowerment Project. Along the route, we "drift" through the Great African Rift Valley, which stretches from Lake Manyara, Lake Eyasi, Lake Natron, and Lake Tanganyika across Tanzania. An impressive geological phenomenon is the stark volcano Ol Donyo Lengai, this active volcano is referred to and revered by the Maasai as "Ngai." At the foot of the volcano, the desert landscape stretches, dotted with the remains of extinct volcanoes and the sparkling Natron Lake, which extends to the Kenyan border. With the hand on the gas, keeping an eye on the track is safer during the motorcycle trip section than capturing the spectacular views. We take our time at the stops to admire nature and one of the inspiring community projects, depending on the riding day and the number of flat motorcycle tires.

And again a highlight of the motorcycle trip through Tanzania, where we spend the vacation day in the gorge at Lake Natron with a small natural phenomenon with waterfalls, natural pools, and slides. The nature lovers among the participants will experience another vacation day with the strange cacti, lush ferns, and palms, as well as bubbling Jacuzzi-like pools, and feel the gorge they have reached, which is perceived as a "nature flash" in a huge natural amphitheater. Here, the springs emerge that feed the pools and streams, drop your pants and jump into the pools to enjoy a shower under the waterfalls. At the end of the day, we return to camp to grill early, as we will drive into the park the next day with a Land Cruiser or, in the worst case, with a Defender off the road.

11. Safari Day: Lake Natron to Serengeti National Park:

After breakfast, the motorcycle safari to Serengeti National Park starts, where we will reach the lodge before sunset. We are now deep in the heart of this famous migration corridor, which has become a bit of a "insider tip" for travelers due to its vast open spaces, the bright blue sky, and landscapes populated by animals. For this very reason, we will take our time to experience the legendary Serengeti, the dream of "Old Africa," and take our time with large lion prides, numerous elephant families, giraffes, gazelles, monkeys, eland antelopes—more or less the entire spectrum of African wildlife in impressive numbers.

12 Serengeti National Park Day: Day of the African Wildlife

We have planned the journey time so that we can explore a small part of the 30,000 square kilometer Serengeti National Park with wildlife observations. The great diversity of Serengeti wildlife is experienced by the motorcycle group on a safari in a 4x4 off-road vehicle in search of buffalo, hippos, elephants, giraffes, antelopes, Thomson and Grant gazelles, and lions. In the dry and rainy season, the spectacular migration of the wildebeests is an incomprehensible spectacle with thousands of animals traversing the Serengeti. Regardless of the migration of wildlife, we will let the big cats lion, leopard, cheetah, as well as rhinos, gazelles, antelopes, and the massive elephants pass in front of the camera lens by the hundreds. TIA, this is Africa!

On the 13th day of the journey: From the Serengeti to the Ngorongoro Crater.

The motorcycle group is on its way to the Ngorongoro Crater, where our lodge was dramatically built on the edge of the crater. Below is a breathtaking panoramic view of the world's largest, unflooded, and intact caldera crater. The caldera of Ngorongoro marks the ancient walls of a collapsed volcano that (it is said) once was the size of Kilimanjaro. In 2010, I traveled to the now completely closed circular crater for the first time, which offers a stunning view into the approximately 15-kilometer-wide steep-walled caldera rising over 2,000 feet. Here we are at about 7,500 feet above sea level, thus reaching the highest point of our motorcycle journey through northeastern Tanzania. On the way, you can visit the Olduvai Gorge and Dr. Leakey's museum or continue directly to the lodge and simply let the view take effect on us.

14th Driving Day: From the Ngorongoro Crater on the Road to Arusha

After the brunch, we leave the lodge; the last riding day on the enduros has begun. The motorcycle convoy rides back relaxed the last kilometers to the tour start in Arusha. The last five hours on the motorcycle are for many travelers the moment when they reflect on the experiences of the motorcycle trip once again; from experience, I can assure you now that this will frequently bring back the experiences on the saddle, in the car, or on the motorcycle through your thoughts. Our second to last stop will be at one of the orphan centers that we support with our tour donations. This donation comes from a part of the proceeds for the safari with you.
