Namibia rewards drivers who already feel at home on gravel and sand, but the two self-drive tours ask very different things of you. The 11-day self-drive safari with rooftop tent runs on well-graded gravel roads through Etosha, the desert and into the Kaokoveld, and suits anyone with solid driving practice and a little off-road mileage. The 18-day guided tour is tougher: Van Zyl's Pass and the deep sand and rock of the Kaokoveld call for genuine 4x4 experience and the discipline to drive in convoy.
You do not bring your own vehicle. Both tours put you behind the wheel of a fully equipped rental 4x4 with rooftop tent and cooler box that we provide. On the self-drive route you navigate independently with a GPS track and a roadbook, on the guided route you drive in convoy behind our guide, with a second expedition vehicle for backup.
Each day opens with a briefing on the route and the state of the tracks ahead, then several hours of driving on gravel, sand or salt pan, with stops to watch game near Etosha or desert elephants further north. Nights are spent in the rooftop tent at camps in the wilderness, and on the guided route close to Himba villages in the Kaokoveld.
Experience required
The 11-day self-drive route needs solid gravel and sand driving practice, guided by GPS track and daily briefings. The 18-day route over Van Zyl's Pass demands real off-road experience: deep sand, rock and river crossings, plus convoy discipline.
Own bike allowed
No own vehicle: you drive a fully equipped rental 4x4 with rooftop tent and cooler box that we provide. Self-drive means independent navigation by GPS track, the guided route runs in convoy with our guide.
Daily distance
Daily distances vary with the route, with several hours of driving on gravel, sand and salt pan tracks between highlights. In total you cover 11 days on the compact Etosha-Kaokoveld safari or 18 days on the longer route via Van Zyl's Pass.
Typical day
The day starts with a briefing on the route and track conditions, then several hours of driving with stops to watch game near Etosha or desert elephants further north. Nights are spent in the rooftop tent at wilderness camps, with Himba village visits on the guided route.
Best time to ride
Namibia's dry season runs May to October, with the firmest gravel and the best wildlife sightings around Etosha. Van Zyl's Pass and the Kaokoveld are best tackled May to September, before the window narrows. Outside these months, rain can turn riverbeds to mud and close tracks in the north. It depends on the tour. The 11-day self-drive safari with rooftop tent runs in small groups of up to 6 vehicles, while the 18-day guided tour through the northeast with Van Zyl's Pass runs in convoys of up to 14 participants.
If you're starting out, the 11-day self-driving safari with 4x4 and rooftop tent runs on well-graded gravel roads around Etosha and the desert. If you already have off-road experience, the 18-day self-drive safari with Van Zyl's Pass and the Kaokoveld is the bigger challenge. After your enquiry you receive a personal quote including the travel protection certificate required under German law. The booking becomes binding once you confirm it, after which you'll receive your tour documents, packing list and all further travel information.
Flights to Windhoek, travel health insurance and fuel for the rental 4x4 are not included in the tour price. Depending on the tour, you should also budget for meals en route and optional extras such as a single room supplement.
