Bike & Rider Level

Does this trip match your riding level?

You don't need any special driving experience or an exceptional level of fitness for a New Zealand round trip. On our guided tours you sit back in an air-conditioned minibus or coach while an experienced tour guide takes care of the driving, so you can simply enjoy the scenery and the stops along the way. If you'd rather be behind the wheel yourself, choose one of our self-drive tours instead: a valid driving licence is all you need, and some experience on open roads helps.

You won't bring your own vehicle on either style of trip. On guided tours we provide the minibus or coach for the whole group, and on self-drive tours we hand you the rental car right at Auckland Airport and you return it in Christchurch at the end of the journey. That keeps the route flexible without you worrying about maintenance or insurance along the way.

Daily distances vary by tour and by day. Some days you stay in one place and explore on foot or by boat, other days bring a longer drive, such as the 234 km stretch from Auckland to Paihia on one of our self-drive routes. A typical day starts with breakfast at the hotel, continues through the day's route and excursions, and ends when you arrive at the next accommodation.

Experience required

No special driving experience is required: on guided tours the tour guide drives the minibus or coach, while self-drive tours just need a valid driving licence and a little comfort on open roads.

Own bike allowed

You don't bring your own vehicle: OVERCROSS provides the minibus or coach on guided tours, or hands you a rental car at Auckland Airport for self-drive tours.

Daily distance

Daily distances vary widely, from quiet days exploring on foot or by boat to longer drives such as the 234 km stretch from Auckland to Paihia on a self-drive route.

Typical day

A typical day starts with breakfast at the hotel, continues through the planned route and the day's excursions, and ends with arrival at the next accommodation.

Best time to ride

New Zealand sits south of the equator, so the seasons run the other way round. The best months for a round trip are November to April, New Zealand's summer, when the days are long and the roads are at their best. Check our New Zealand travel information page for the full season by season breakdown.

FAQ

Booking questions

What does a New Zealand round trip cost?
Our New Zealand round trips run from 3089 EUR for the 18 day self-drive tour with rental car, up to 5659 EUR for the 24 day self-drive round trip covering both islands. Guided coach tours with a tour guide sit in between, depending on length and hotel category.
What is included in the price?
Depending on the tour, this includes hotel, motel or B&B accommodation, breakfast, the ferry crossing between the North and South Island and, on guided tours, an English speaking tour guide. Self-drive tours include the rental car with basic insurance. International flights and most lunches and dinners are usually not included.
How big is the group?
That depends on the tour: our guided round trips run in groups of between 4 and 26 travellers, depending on the route. If you prefer to travel independently, our self-drive tours with rental car are bookable from 1 person up to 8 travellers.
Do I need to pay a deposit?
After booking you receive a confirmation with all payment details and deadlines for the deposit and the final balance. Our team will confirm the exact amounts and dates as soon as your tour and travel dates are fixed.
What do I need to organise before departure?
Everything about entry requirements for New Zealand, from the electronic travel authorisation to passport rules, is collected on our New Zealand travel information page. Check it before you start planning your trip.
What gear should I pack?
Pack in layers, New Zealand can show you several seasons in a single day. Bring sturdy, comfortable shoes for walks, a rain jacket, swimwear and sunglasses. For self-drive tours we also recommend a power bank for navigation on the road.
How does booking work?
Choose your tour and get in touch through our booking form or directly with our team. Once we've confirmed availability you'll receive your booking confirmation with all travel documents, payment information and a contact person for any questions before departure.
