Our India off-road tours cover the range of the Indian Himalayas: the Lahaul and Spiti adventure is the more approachable of the two thanks to its convoy set-up, while the 14-day Ladakh trip climbs passes such as the Khardung La and demands steep switchbacks, river crossings and thin high-altitude air. If you can hold your line on gravel and washboard, stay calm on steep drop-offs and handle river fords without drama, you are ready for either route; real high-mountain mileage pays off most around the Nubra Valley and the Indus plateaus.
Both tours run on a self-drive principle: you sit behind the wheel of one of our prepared 4x4 vehicles and drive in convoy with the group. You cannot bring your own vehicle, the permits required for India's border regions in Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh only cover our fleet.
Fixed daily kilometres matter less here than altitude and time: the passes rank among the highest drivable roads on earth, and Pangong Tso alone sits over 4,200 metres, so even short distances fill a full day between switchbacks, river fords and thin air. A typical day starts with a briefing on the stage ahead, on the Spiti route including a GPS track for the Hindustan-Tibet Highway, then several hours over passes, riverbeds and cliffside tracks. Evenings bring camp in the Nubra Valley or by the Indus lakes, or an apartment with meals, always with a certified English-speaking guide.
Experience required
Comfortable off-road experience for the Ladakh tour's passes, river crossings and gravel switchbacks; the Lahaul and Spiti route is a touch more accessible but still crosses the Hindustan-Tibet Highway and riverbeds, so stay calm behind the wheel.
Own bike allowed
No, on both India tours you drive one of our prepared 4x4 vehicles in convoy; your own vehicle is not permitted due to border-area permits in Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh.
Daily distance
Fixed daily kilometres take a back seat to pass altitude, river crossings and acclimatisation, so even short distances can fill a full driving day on these routes.

Mornings start with a briefing for the stage ahead, on the Spiti route including a GPS track, then hours over passes, riverbeds and cliffside tracks; evenings bring camp near Nubra Valley or the Indus lakes, or an apartment with meals, with a certified English-speaking guide.
Best time to ride
The Himalayan stretch of India rides free of snow only from June to September, when the high passes around Leh, the Nubra Valley and the Indus region stay open. Spiti Valley stays rideable a little longer, into October, before snow closes passes like the Khardung La. Check exact dates with us when you book, mountain weather can shift the window either way.

What is included in the price of an India off-road tour?
Your prepared 4x4 for the self-drive convoy, a certified English-speaking guide, the permits needed for Ladakh and the border region, plus accommodation and meals as listed for your tour. International flights and travel insurance are not included.
Do I need my own vehicle or is one provided?
You drive one of our prepared 4x4 vehicles yourself, in convoy with the group. Bringing your own vehicle is not possible, the permits for the border regions of Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh only cover our fleet.
How big are the groups on these tours?
The Ladakh off-road trip takes up to 20 participants, the Lahaul and Spiti adventure up to 12, each travelling with a certified guide and steady support throughout the drive.
Which tour suits my driving experience?
The 14-day Ladakh trip over the Khardung La is the more demanding of the two and suits drivers with real off-road experience. The Lahaul and Spiti adventure is a touch more accessible but still crosses the Hindustan-Tibet Highway, so tell us your level when you enquire.
What deposit do I need to pay for the vehicle?
On the Ladakh trip the refundable vehicle deposit is 300 euros for a Mahindra Thar or Scorpio and 600 euros for a Toyota Fortuner. On the Lahaul and Spiti adventure the deposit is 500 euros, paid locally and refunded once the vehicle comes back undamaged.
What do I need to arrange for myself before the trip?

How does booking and the deposit for the trip work?
After you enquire you receive a personal offer including the statutory travel protection certificate. The booking becomes binding once you confirm it, after that you get your tour documents, packing list and all further information for the trip.
