The Journey
The Machame Route is considered the most scenic route to the summit of Kilimanjaro. The ascent begins in the dense rainforest at the foot of the mountain and then leads through the individual camps to the main summit Kibo. Along the way, trekking enthusiasts are treated to breathtaking views. The Machame Route is certainly one of the more challenging routes and features very steep sections leading to the summit. You have to overcome more altitude on this route than on other routes. Overnight stays are in tents. Alternatively, you can also book an ascent via the Marangu, Lemosho, Shira, Rongai, or Umbwe routes through us!
Welcome at Kilimanjaro Airport by the transfer driver and drive to Key's Hotel in Moshi. The rest of the day is at leisure, relaxing in the hotel or a stroll through the small town of Moshi are possible options. At the hotel there will be a briefing for the ascent tomorrow. Meals: Dinner
In the morning we will be picked up at the hotel and after about 45 minutes of driving we will reach the park entrance of Kilimanjaro. While the tour guide takes care of the admission formalities, we can watch the colorful hustle and bustle of the mountain crews. It is always impressive what - and especially "how" - everything is carried up the mountain. The Kilimanjaro adventure begins. After just a few steps, we immerse ourselves in dense mountain rainforest with its gigantic primeval trees, ferns, moss carpets, lianas, and lichens. With a bit of luck, we might even spot the black-and-white Colobus monkeys in the tree crowns. After about 5-6 hours we will reach our goal for today. The Machame Camp is located just above the tree line at 3010m. Dinner follows and we will have our first overnight stay in a tent at Kilimanjaro. Meals: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner
After the early morning start from Machame Camp, we first pass through the heath and moorland zone. The hiking trail becomes rockier and the landscape more open, so that soon the summit region of Kilimanjaro is clearly visible. Today's stage is shorter than the day before and we will reach the expansive Shira Plateau with the same-named campsite by noon. The camp offers a breathtaking view of the summit region of Kilimanjaro - especially at sunset, when the rock faces and glaciers of Kibo are bathed in warm evening light. Meals: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner
Although we will overcome about 700 meters of elevation during today's stage, the evening camp is only slightly higher than the Shira Camp of the previous night. This stage significantly contributes to better acclimatization, and we can already test how our body reacts to over 4500m. The hike begins with a long ascent over the Shira Plateau towards the Lava Tower Hut (4640m). The landscape becomes distinctly Afro-alpine, and the vegetation sparser. After that, we descend through the expansive Barranco Valley with its giant Senecios and Lobelias. After about 6-7 hours, we reach the probably most beautiful camp, the Barranco Camp on Kilimanjaro. Meals: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner
Questions about the tour itinerary?
Our tour guide is happy to answer any questions about the day-by-day route, stops, and details.
At the beginning of today's stage, we have to climb the steep "Barranco Wall." At some exposed spots, the guide will stand safely to the side. After that, we will go "up and down" over various ridges with a magnificent view of the southern glaciers of Kilimanjaro. At lunchtime, we will take our lunch break in the Karanga Valley before the last 2-3 hours of ascent to the Barafu Camp (4640m) await us. In the camp, we can now prepare for the upcoming summit ascent and go to bed early after an early dinner. Meals: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner
After a warming tea and some cookies for strength, our ascent begins at 00:00 hours. In the beam of the headlamp, we now climb the steep ash slopes of Kilimanjaro. After about 5-7 hours of night ascent, we will reach Stella Point (5730m), which marks the crater rim of Kilimanjaro. As the rising sun sends its warming rays to the summit region and the vast plains, we now continue for the last 1-2 hours along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5895m). Congratulations: We are standing on the roof of Africa! The easier descent follows almost the same route and we will reach Barafu Camp again in the early morning. Here, the remaining mountain team has waited for us and provides us with a warm meal. After about 1-2 hours of rest, we continue our descent to Mweka Camp (3080m), where dinner and the well-deserved sleep await us. Meals: Breakfast; Lunch; Dinner
The last stage begins after breakfast and the traditional farewell ceremony by the mountain team. We now descend comfortably for the last 2 hours through the rainforest to the Mweka Gate. Our driver is waiting for us, and after a short drive, we return to the Key's Hotel in Moshi. At the swimming pool, we can relax after the strenuous trekking tour and enjoy the summit success. Meals: Breakfast; Dinner
After breakfast, everyone continues with their individual travel program or receives a transfer to Kilimanjaro Airport or to a location of their choice in the greater Moshi area. Meals: Breakfast
