Our Balkans tours split into two kinds of off-road adventure. The Bosnia 4x4 Offroad Scouting Tour and the Albania 4x4 Off-Road Adventure Trip put you behind the wheel of your own 4x4 for 5 and 10 days, at a relaxed skill level open to confident beginners. The Montenegro Experience Trip trades wheels for a rented snowmobile, riding the high passes around Durmitor and Sinjajevina in winter.
Guest reviews describe the Albania route through the Shala Mountains and the Osum Gorges as tougher than its beginner rating suggests: narrow, steep gravel switchbacks demand a steady hand, while the Bosnia route across the Kupres plateau and around Prokoško Lake is a gentler scouting drive for those newer to the terrain. On both, you drive your own vehicle; tell us its specs when you book so we can confirm it's ready for the route.
A typical day starts with a briefing and GPS track before the convoy sets off together, never more than 8 vehicles at a time, led by a guide who knows the border crossings and conditions firsthand. Nights alternate between mountain camps and small, family-run hotels, depending on the tour and the region you're riding through.
Experience required
Skill level 1 on all three tours: a relaxed, confident pace off-road is enough, no racing experience needed. Reviews describe the Albania route as tougher than that rating suggests, with steep, narrow gravel switchbacks.
Own bike allowed
On the Albania and Bosnia 4x4 tours you drive your own vehicle; tell us its specs when you enquire so we can confirm it suits the route. On the Montenegro trip the snowmobile and fuel are already included in the price.
Daily distance
Daily distances vary a lot by region: short, technical stretches through the Durmitor passes and the Shala Mountains, longer transfers on the roads connecting regions. The 10-day Albania trip covers more ground overall than the 5-day Bosnia or Montenegro tours.
Typical day
Each day starts with a briefing and a GPS track before the group sets off together, guided throughout by a local or German-speaking guide. Evenings alternate between mountain camps and small, family-run hotels or guesthouses, depending on the tour and region.
Best time to ride
The Balkans ride two very different seasons. Snowmobile trips through Durmitor and Sinjajevina run January to February, once the high passes are deep in snow. Our 4x4 tours through Albania and Bosnia run May to July, when the mountain tracks are clear and dry. Groups stay small, so book your dates early.

What's included in the price of a Balkans tour?
Every Balkans tour includes an experienced guide and the accommodation listed on its own tour page. The Montenegro Snowmobile Trip includes the snowmobile rental and fuel, the Albania 4x4 Adventure Trip mixes hotel and camping nights, and the Bosnia Scouting Tour includes breakfast at every stop. Flights, personal insurance and most lunches are extra.
How much do the tours cost?
Prices per person start at 1549 € for the 5-day Bosnia 4x4 Scouting Tour, run to 1750 € for the 5-day Montenegro Snowmobile Trip, and to 1999 € for the 10-day Albania 4x4 Adventure Trip. Each price covers the services listed on that tour's own page; exact departure dates can shift the final total slightly.
Is there a deposit, and do I need insurance?
A damage deposit of 300 € per snowmobile is due locally on the Montenegro trip. Foreign accident insurance is mandatory on that tour and strongly recommended on the Albania and Bosnia routes; it's not included in the tour price, so please arrange your own cover before you travel.
How big are the groups?
Groups stay small on purpose. The Montenegro Snowmobile Trip takes 4 to 8 riders, the Bosnia 4x4 Scouting Tour runs with 4 to 8 vehicles, and the Albania 4x4 Adventure Trip caps out at 8 vehicles. That keeps every guide able to look after each driver on the tricky sections.
Do I need my own vehicle?
On the Albania and Bosnia tours you drive your own 4x4; tell us its specs when you enquire so we can confirm it's ready for the route. On the Montenegro trip, the snowmobile and fuel are already included in the price, so no vehicle of your own is needed.
How does booking work?
Send us an enquiry for the tour and dates you want and we'll check availability and send you a personal offer. Your booking becomes binding once you confirm it and pay the deposit, after which you'll get the full tour documents and a packing list.
