Peru is a fascinating destination for adventure travel, where culture and nature flow together in a unique way. In addition to exploring Machu Picchu, the mysterious Nazca Lines and the wildlife in Manu National Park are other highlights. Peru also delights with exciting festivals, delicious ceviche, and a diverse cuisine. The perfect travel time is between May and September, ideal for thrilling discovery tours through this remarkable country.
Your Peru adventure trip is not a motorcycle tour. It is a guided round trip, a trek or a mountaineering expedition, whichever you choose. Round trips such as the trip to Machu Picchu or the Peru and Ecuador round trip suit beginners too: you travel by vehicle or by train and walk only short distances. The Salkantay Trek and the mountaineering expeditions in the Cordillera Blanca ask for good fitness and some trekking experience instead, because you are on your feet for several hours a day.
No motorcycle is used on these trips. On the round trips, an air-conditioned bus or minibus with a local guide takes you from place to place, combined with train rides such as the one to Machu Picchu. On the Salkantay Trek and in the Cordillera Blanca you carry only a daypack while mules or donkeys take the rest of the luggage, and a certified mountain guide to IVBV, UIAGM and IFMGA standard secures the demanding sections on glaciers and ridges.
A day looks very different depending on the trip. On a round trip, city visits in Cusco or Lima alternate with excursions to ruins and markets. On a trek, you start early, walk through valleys and over passes, and reach the next lodge or camp by afternoon. On summit days, such as the climb to the 5,947 metre Alpamayo or the 6,034 metre Nevado Tocllaraju, you set off at night to reach the top in the first light.
Round trips such as the trip to Machu Picchu suit beginners, while the Salkantay Trek and the Cordillera Blanca expeditions call for good fitness and some trekking experience.
No own motorcycle is used: round trips travel by bus, minibus or train, and on trekking or mountaineering trips you carry only a daypack while mules or donkeys take the luggage.
There is no fixed daily distance: round trip days combine drives and short walks, trekking days mean several hours on foot, and summit days start well before sunrise.
Round trip days alternate city visits and excursions, trekking days lead from one lodge or camp to the next, and on summit days you set off long before sunrise to reach the top.
The Andes around Cusco travel best from May to September, in the dry season. The Amazon lowlands are driest from June to September. The Cordillera Blanca is best for mountaineering from June to August. The full climate table is in our Reiseinformation Peru.
