Country Profile

Uganda Safari: gorilla trekking in Bwindi, home to half the world's mountain gorillas

Uganda is the country of the gorillas: of the roughly 1,060 mountain gorillas left in the world, about half live in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in the south west, a montane rainforest of 331 km² between 1,160 and 2,607 m, a World Heritage Site since 1994. The walk to the family takes 2 to 4 hours, depending on where it stands that morning, and ends with exactly one hour beside the animals.

A Uganda safari is more than the forest. In the 795 km² of Kibale Forest you follow the chimpanzees, in Queen Elizabeth Park with its almost 2,000 km² the lions of the Ishasha sector climb the fig trees, in Murchison Falls Park the Nile squeezes through a gorge only seven metres wide, and on the Kazinga Channel you pass hippos, buffalo and fish eagles. Lake Mburo Park is the only place in Uganda with zebras and eland.

Our five tours run 7 to 17 days. Four of them travel by Land Cruiser with a pop up roof in groups of no more than 4 guests, one is a group tour in an overland truck with up to 20 seats, from 1,629 €. The 17 day trip climbs to almost 4,000 m in the Rwenzori first, the 14 day one starts in Kigali and takes in Akagera National Park. On two tours the gorilla permit is in the price, on two more you book it with us for 869 € per person.

Lodge or camping

How you travel on this safari

Four of our five tours travel in a 4x4 Land Cruiser with a pop up roof, 4 guests at most, with a driver and guide who speaks English and, for a surcharge, German. The fifth is a group tour with up to 20 guests in an overland truck, plus a 4x4 for the game drives. The Land Cruisers have no air conditioning, only the open roof.

You sleep in lodges and mid range rooms, in bandas near Fort Portal and in permanent tents, and on the Rwenzori stage in simple mountain huts with bunk beds, no bathroom and no shower. The group tour is booked as an Explorer camping expedition from 1,629 € or as Classic in a double room from 1,999 €, with a 199 € single supplement. Full board is included on the 7 day and the 14 day tour, and on the group tour 7 breakfasts, 8 lunches and 7 dinners.

The trekking day starts early: drive to the park headquarters, ranger briefing, then 2 to 4 hours of searching and exactly one hour with the gorilla family, the afternoon free. Which family you visit is settled before the trip, the permits are strictly limited. A safari day has the game drive at first light, a lunch box in the park and two hours by boat on the Kazinga Channel. Porters carry your pack on the trekking, they are not in the price and are paid locally.

Who it suits

For guests who can walk 2 to 4 hours in montane forest, steep, wet and mostly off any path. Four of the five tours run with 4 guests at most. The 17 day round trip also asks for real stamina and a sure foot up to almost 4,000 m in the Rwenzori.

Where you sleep

Lodges and mid range rooms, bandas in the crater lake country, permanent tents, and simple mountain huts with bunk beds and no bathroom in the Rwenzori. The group tour comes as a camping expedition from 1,629 € or as Classic in a double room from 1,999 €.

Vehicle and legs

4x4 Land Cruiser with a pop up roof and no air conditioning, 4 guests at most, and on the group tour an overland truck with up to 20 seats plus a 4x4 for the game drives. Driving days such as Entebbe to Kibale take about 6 hours, the run back to Entebbe up to 8.

A day on safari

Trekking day: early drive to the park headquarters, ranger briefing, 2 to 4 hours of searching, one hour with the family, afternoon free. Safari day: game drive at first light, lunch box in the park, two hours by boat on the Kazinga Channel in the afternoon.

Booking questions
Where do most of Uganda's mountain gorillas live?

In the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in the south west of the country. The montane rainforest covers 331 km², lies between 1,160 and 2,607 m and has been a World Heritage Site since 1994. About half of the roughly 1,060 mountain gorillas left in the world live there. All five tours in our programme go to Bwindi, two of them start the trek in the Ruhija sector.

Which national parks do the Uganda tours visit?

Bwindi Impenetrable, Queen Elizabeth with the Ishasha sector and the Kazinga Channel, Kibale Forest, Murchison Falls with the Budongo Forest, Lake Mburo and the Rwenzori mountains. One tour also takes in Akagera National Park and Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda. Park entry fees are included in the price on all five tours.

How long is a Uganda safari with OVERCROSS?

Between 7 and 17 days. The shortest is the 7 day small group tour from Entebbe by way of Kibale and Queen Elizabeth into Bwindi, the longest the 17 day round trip with the Rwenzori trek in front of it. In between sit the 8 day group tour, the 12 day active trip with the Kasenda crater lakes and the 14 day trip through Rwanda and Uganda.

Is a German speaking guide available?

On the 7 day and the 14 day small group tour the guide speaks English and, on request and for a surcharge, German. The other tours run with a multilingual guide and driver who also drives the vehicle. We tell you what is possible for your departure before you book.

Can I combine Uganda with Rwanda?

Yes. The 14 day trip starts in Kigali, drives first into Akagera National Park and on to Musanze for Volcanoes National Park, where golden monkeys or the Dian Fossey trail above 2,800 m are the choice. It then crosses the border into Uganda for the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.

When is the best time for a Uganda safari?
June to September and December to February. That is when it rains least, the paths in Bwindi are firmer and the tracks in Murchison Falls Park are drivable. The Rwenzori mountain trek is best from mid December to early February. Uganda sits on the equator, so the country can be travelled all year and daytime temperatures barely move.
What does the gorilla permit cost and is it in the price?
On two of our tours one gorilla permit and one chimpanzee permit are included in the price. On the 12 day active trip and the 17 day round trip you book the gorilla permit as an add on for 869 € per person and the chimpanzee permit for 289 €. On the 8 day group tour the gorilla trek is an optional activity arranged locally. The number of permits is strictly limited, which is why we settle early which gorilla family you visit.
How hard is the gorilla trek?
The walk to the family takes 2 to 4 hours, depending on where it stands that morning. It goes steeply and mostly off any path through wet montane forest between 1,160 and 2,607 m, and then you have exactly one hour beside the animals. Porters carry your pack, they are not in the tour price and are paid locally. Book the 17 day round trip with the Rwenzori and you also need real stamina and a sure foot.
Lodge or camping, what is the difference in price?
On the 8 day group tour you choose in the booking form: Explorer camping expedition from 1,629 € or Classic in a double room from 1,999 €, so 370 € apart, plus a 199 € single supplement on Classic. The four small group tours sleep in lodges, bandas and permanent tents, and in simple mountain huts with bunk beds on the Rwenzori stage.
How big are the groups?
Four of the five tours run with 4 guests at most, and two of those already depart with 2 people. The 8 day group tour departs from 4 guests and takes up to 20. The chimpanzee trek in the Budongo Forest is capped there at 12 people per group and is split into a morning and an afternoon party when more guests are on the trip.
Will I see the Big Five in Uganda?
Four of them: lions, elephants, buffalo and leopards are on the programme in Queen Elizabeth Park and Murchison Falls Park. Rhinos live in Uganda only in the Ziwa sanctuary, offered on the group tour as an optional rhino walk on foot. Add the chimpanzees in Kibale and Budongo, the hippos and fish eagles on the Kazinga Channel and the tree climbing lions of the Ishasha sector.
