Namibia is two and a half times the size of Germany and home to 2.6 million people, most of them in the north. In between there is room for the oldest desert on earth, the Namib, and for Etosha National Park, 22,270 km² around a salt pan where elephants, rhinos, lions and giraffes stand at the same waterholes through the dry season. Several of the camps inside the park sit at floodlit waterholes, so you can watch the animals after dark as well.
Half of a Namibia Safari is therefore landscape: the dunes of Sossusvlei, Dead Vlei with its 900 year old camel thorn trees, the Fish River Canyon at 160 km long, the seal colony at Cape Cross. The roads are good, the gravel tracks are wide and the distances are long: Windhoek to Sossusvlei is 350 km, Sossusvlei to Swakopmund 350 km, Swakopmund to Etosha 500 km.

Namibia is the country we recommend most often for a first safari: good roads, a malaria free south, and in Swakopmund German street names, bakeries and colonial facades.

Every park has its season and its animals. This is what awaits you where in Namibia.
In Namibia you travel in an overland truck or in a minibus with a trailer, depending on the tour. The truck seats 20 to 24 guests and has big windows, lockers and a fridge; the minibus on the small group tour has 12 seats. The guide drives and speaks English, and on selected departures of the 12 day round trip German as well. The distances are the longest of any safari country, 300 to 500 km on a driving day, on tar road and wide gravel track.
On the camping tours you sleep in a fixed tent on developed campsites with showers, and the kitchen travels on the truck. You help pitch camp and the crew cooks: on the 11 day trip that is 10 breakfasts, 9 lunches and 8 dinners. The lodge version of the same route moves between guest farms, lodges and hotels in Swakopmund, and the small group tour sleeps in lodges and camps.
Days start early, because the dunes are at their best before 8 in the morning and the animals in Etosha drink before the midday heat. Midday in summer goes above 35 degrees, and on winter nights the Namib drops to around freezing. Pack for both. Physically the trip asks little of you, apart from the climb up Dune 45, roughly 170 metres of sand at sunrise.
A good fit for a first safari: tarred main routes, a malaria free south and no walk longer than 2 hours. The camping tours are for anyone happy in a tent, the small group tour with at most 12 guests for anyone who wants it quieter.

The oldest desert on earth, with the rust red dunes of Sossusvlei, Deadvlei and the Sesriem Canyon. All six tours climb Dune 45 early in the morning, then a 4x4 shuttle takes you on to the camel thorn trees of Deadvlei.
Around the Etosha salt pan you watch elephants, lions, giraffes and rhinos at the waterholes. In the dry season the game gathers at a handful of springs, because there is no other water. Four of our six tours drive game here, the 11 day trip with two full safari days.
To the park: Etosha National Park
Wide plains with table mountains, the rock engravings of Twyfelfontein and the Petrified Forest near Khorixas. On the Brandberg, the highest mountain in Namibia, sits the White Lady, one of more than 45,000 San rock paintings and around 2,000 years old.
In Swakopmund you trade desert dust for cool sea air, colonial facades and German bakeries. Flamingos stand in the shallow water of the Walvis Bay lagoon. All six tours stop here, and sandboarding, quad tours and kayak trips out to the seals are bookable on the spot.

To fit Sossusvlei, Swakopmund and Etosha into one trip, allow 11 to 12 days, which is what our three longest Namibia programmes run. In 7 days you can do the desert route from Cape Town to Swakopmund, but without Etosha. Our six safaris last between 7 and 12 days.
The dry season from May to October counts as the best time to travel: settled weather and the best game viewing at the waterholes in Etosha National Park. From November to April the rain falls short and hard, the landscape turns green and there are young animals, but the herds spread out.
Yes. The main routes are tarred, the south is malaria free, and none of the planned walks lasts longer than two hours. Guide and crew handle the driving, the route and the catering, and the national park fees are already in the price.
Yes. Four of our six tours start in Cape Town and run up through the Cederberg, Namaqualand and the Orange River into Namibia. Two of them are sold as a round trip through both countries, 7 days as far as Swakopmund or 12 days to Windhoek with Etosha.
