How you travel on this safari
Our Malawi safaris are overland journeys, not motorcycle tours: you travel together in a 4x4 overland truck or a minibus, with one shared route and one shared pace. Groups run up to 20 travelers, guided the whole way by an experienced, multilingual guide who briefs the group before every stage. The 13-day Victoria Falls safari and the 16-day route on to Zanzibar both follow this format, crossing Zambia and Malawi, with the longer trip continuing into Tanzania and on to Zanzibar.
At night you choose how you sleep: a camping safari in your own tent with gear provided by OVERCROSS, or the more comfortable lodge option in fixed accommodation. Both options share the same guide, vehicle and route, only the evening comfort differs. Traveling solo, you pay a single supplement that is refunded if a same-room or same-tent partner is found on site; bring your own sleeping bag if you choose the camping option.
A typical day starts with breakfast at the camp or lodge, then a game drive or the next driving stage toward the day's stop, whether that is Lake Malawi, South Luangwa National Park or Victoria Falls. The group breaks for lunch along the way: the 13-day trip serves 10 breakfasts, 8 lunches and 10 dinners in total, the 16-day trip 15 breakfasts, 12 lunches and 11 dinners. Evenings end with dinner together at the next camp or lodge.
Who it suits
No riding skills are needed: you travel as a passenger in the group vehicle. Basic fitness for early starts, warm days and, on the camping option, simple camp life is enough to enjoy either Malawi route.
Where you sleep
There is no own-vehicle option on these tours: the whole group moves together in the overland truck or minibus provided by OVERCROSS, from Victoria Falls through Malawi to South Luangwa or on to Zanzibar.
Vehicle and legs
No fixed daily distance is set. Driving stages follow the route between stops such as Lake Malawi, South Luangwa National Park and Victoria Falls, broken up with game drives and rest stops along the way.
A day on safari
Mornings start with breakfast at the camp or lodge, then a game drive or the next driving stage in the truck. The group breaks for a midday stop before continuing on to the next camp or lodge for dinner together.

When is the best time for a Malawi safari?
The dry season from May to October is the best time to travel: game viewing is easier as animals gather near water, and the overland roads are in their best condition. Lake Malawi is swimmable and pleasant year-round, so the lake stop works well on any departure date.

Can I combine Malawi with other countries on one trip?
Yes. Both tours on this page treat Malawi as one stage of a longer overland route: the Victoria Falls safari links Zimbabwe, Zambia and Malawi, while the longer route continues from Malawi through Tanzania to Zanzibar, so you see several countries on a single booking.

Wildlife viewing happens either side of your days at Lake Malawi: game drives in South Luangwa National Park in Zambia come before it, and on the longer route, Mikumi National Park in Tanzania comes after. The lake stop is the calm middle of the journey between two safari destinations.

What is included in the price?
Your guide, transport in the group vehicle, park entrance fees and every overnight stay are included on both tours. Meals follow the itinerary: the 13-day trip includes 10 breakfasts, 8 lunches and 10 dinners, the 16-day trip 15 breakfasts, 12 lunches and 11 dinners. Flights, drinks and personal spending are extra.
How big is the travel group?
Groups travel together in one overland vehicle with a maximum of 20 travelers, so your guide can still keep track of everyone. Both the 13-day and the 16-day Malawi routes run at this same group size, whichever accommodation option you choose.
How does booking and payment work?
You secure your place with a deposit at booking, then pay the balance before departure. Travelers arriving without a roommate or tent partner pay a single supplement, which is refunded if a same-room or same-tent partner is found once you are on tour.
What gear should I bring?
On the camping safari, bring your own sleeping bag; tents and other camping gear are provided. On both the camping and lodge options, pack warm layers for early game drives, sturdy footwear and mandatory travel health insurance, which is required for every traveler.
Can I choose between camping and lodge on the same tour?
Yes. Both the 13-day and the 16-day Malawi routes are available as a camping safari in your own tent or as the more comfortable lodge option in fixed accommodation. The guide, vehicle and route stay the same, only your overnight comfort changes.
