Days 1–11
Erlebnis-Reisen Afrika

Windhoek - Etosha

Transfer from Namibia's International Airport to downtown Windhoek. Introduction to the off-road vehicles at the workshop. Departure to the Etosha Pan to enjoy "Africa at its best" at the famous waterhole of Okaukuejo on the very first evening. In Etosha Park, we encounter all the animals of southern Africa: elephants, lions, giraffes, zebras, antelope species, and with a bit of luck, also a rhinoceros. Tomorrow will give us plenty of opportunity for that. But today, the starry sky in its indescribable clarity - after all, Namibia is among the top 3 places in the world for astronomical observations by the Max Planck Institute - is our observation field, and one or two shooting stars may greet us. Camping in tents. The tents and all camping equipment will be provided, but we ask participants to assist in setting up and taking down the campsite. (450km paved road)

Offroad-Reisen Botswana Etosha Fort Namutoni Tierherden

Etosha National Park

After breakfast, our game drive through Etosha National Park begins. Our overnight destination today is again in the national park: Fort Namutoni. The fort served the German Schutztruppe and is now a picturesque entrance gate in the east to the park. The pan always offers unobstructed views of the animal herds living in the park, a major advantage of the park for wildlife observation. Lunch in Halali. Camping at Fort Namutoni, which also has a waterhole with seating and provides an atmospheric setting with African wildlife at night. (120km dirt road)

Erlebnis-Reisen Afrika

Rundu

From Tsumeb and Grootfontein we go to Rundu at the Angolan border. The riverbank of Angola lies before us, but there is no border crossing here and so it is wonderful to dream in the Sarasungu River Lodge with the sounds of the night. The Okavango flows by here on its way to the delta and already gives us a glimpse of the magnificent natural landscape that awaits us. (360km asphalt road)

Offroad-Reisen Botswana Caprivizipfel Elefantenherden Zambesi

Caprivi Strip

The border at the tripoint in Katima Mulilo is our destination today. The Caprivi Strip, which could only be traversed in a convoy a few years ago, now offers untouched nature, and often herds of elephants cross our path as they wander between the countries and are often heading to Chobe National Park. A small highlight on the way are the Popa Waterfalls, not particularly large, but they offer us a nice place to rest. Tonight we are sleeping by the banks of the Zambezi, one of the great African rivers, and here it is quite calm and serene. Overnight at Zambezi River Lodge. (500km paved road or dirt track)

Offroad-Reisen Namibia, Etosha-Nationalpark

Victoria Falls

Crossing the Ngoma Bridge, we travel through Zimbabwe to Zambia to visit the Victoria Falls from there. "The smoke that thunders" already impressed Dr. Livingstone at the time, and it has lost none of its beauty since then. Situated in the tropical nature of a rainforest, the Zambezi falls 108m deep over a width of 1700m. The Victoria Falls are twice as high as Niagara Falls, and the resulting mist clouds reach up to 500m high and can be seen from up to 60km away. Mosi-oa-Tunya (as the falls are called by the local people) carries different volumes of water depending on the season, and they are certainly most spectacular in April after the rainy season; however, the mist formation is so strong then that often the falls cannot be seen. Overnight stay at Sprayview Hotel. (130km of paved road)

Offroad-Reisen Botswana Chobe Elefantenherden Camping

Botswana - Chobe National Park

Extensive visit to the falls in the morning. Afterwards, we are expected at Chobe National Park in Botswana, and the off-road tracks will become more challenging. Soft sand requires our full concentration, but in return, the campsite in the evening rewards us with the sounds of the African night and the still fascinatingly beautiful starry sky. Chobe is world-famous for its large elephant herds, but don’t worry, elephants behave extremely cautiously and camping is safe. However, some may notice the footprints of the nocturnal visitors in the morning next to the tent. Camping on the edge of Chobe National Park. (150km gravel road)
