The Journey

Sahara off-road trip during the Easter holidays

This Tunisia 4x4 Offroad Tour combines the ease of spring with real desert adventure and has been an integral part of our Sahara program for over 20 years. As a 4x4 Circuit Tour Tunisia, the route takes you from the ferry in Genoa through Tunis deep into the Sahara: 15 days with moderate stages of 4-5 hours driving time and a combination of overnight stays in hotels, camping sites & wild camps. This Offroad Family Vacation Sahara trip is suitable for beginners, families, and experienced off-roaders in spring temperatures of 22-30°C during the day.

Genoa - Embarkation for the ferry

The start of your Tunisia 4x4 Offroad Tour begins in the port of Genoa, where all participants and off-road vehicles meet in convoy. After check-in, the ferry departs towards Tunis, and the adventure officially begins with the first view of the open sea.

Tunis - Arrival & Drive to Hammamet

Tunis - Arrival & Drive to Hammamet

After arriving at the port of La Goulette and the border formalities, this Tunisia Family Trip 4x4 continues in convoy to Hammamet. The first hotel by the sea offers time to settle in before heading inland towards the Sahara the following day.

This Tunisia Desert Tour Family shows Tunisia's varied side today: coastal region, steppe, and mountain ranges alternate before the landscape becomes more barren. In Gafsa, you pitch your first camp and feel how the pace of travel slows down.

  • Is the tour taking place?
OVERCROSS has been conducting tours in Tunisia since 2000, the first Family & Friends in Tunisia took place in 2005, and since 2010 (apart from the Covid period) we have been in Tunisia every year to carry out our tours there. In individual cases, it may happen that there are not enough registrations for a tour, in which case the tour must be canceled at least four to six weeks before the start of the journey. Since it is important to us that your vacation is a complete success, we are always in regular contact with you regarding this matter. If a tour has to be canceled, you will of course be refunded the full price.
  • Is individual arrival and departure possible?
For an additional cost of approximately 400€ (including vehicle and cabin on the ferry) per ferry crossing, we can book an individual ferry ticket for you at your desired time.
  • Are my children too young for this tour?
We have already had children as young as 4-5 years old with us. You know your children best. Some are very travel-ready, others less so. You know this best. In general, the adventurous spirit of the parents also rubs off on the children.
  • Is my vehicle suitable for this tour?
It is best to send us an email with the details of your vehicle. Generally, four-wheel drive is a must! However, a low-range gearbox and differential locks are not mandatory for this tour.
  • How old are the other children on the tour?
That varies quite a bit, our youngest adventurers were 4-5 years old, the older ones are already in their teenage years. And then there are the big kids behind the wheel 😉
  • How and where will we sleep?
On the ferry, we are accommodated in cabins. We spend the first and last night in Tunisia in a hotel by the sea. During the tour, we will visit various campsites where there are also sanitary facilities. We will also camp wild for a few nights in the desert.
  • Other providers have excluded the ferry! How expensive is the ferry for two adults, a child, and a Toyota Land Cruiser with a rooftop tent?
The ferry costs about 1000.- euros for a TOYO LC with a rooftop tent "height surcharge" added. The price includes people and a separate cabin.
  • Are there additional costs such as tolls, ferry port duties, and harbor fees?
No, we do not want to offer any "bargain" deals! Customs / harbor fees / tolls in Tunisia / as well as dinner and breakfast are all included, so you only need money for the fuel of the off-road vehicle and its driver ;-)
  • Can I book the ferry myself?
Yes, you can. In that case, please let us know, as you will not be in the group rate.
  • Is the ferry to and from Tunisia included?
No, the ferry to and from Tunisia is not included. You can book the ferry through us and benefit from our group discount (approximately 40%).
  • Is a single cabin on the ferry and a single room in the hotel for solo travelers possible?
A single cabin on the ferry and a single room in the hotel for solo travelers, e.g., the driver in the off-road vehicle, is possible. However, you need to let us know, as we have to book everything together.
  • How much diesel do I need for my off-road vehicle?
The fuel consumption of diesel and gasoline is as varied in off-road vehicles as the engine displacement and terrain conditions. Count on 700-800 kilometers of road range, then you are on the right track ;-)
  • I heard that in a privately led group, a fine supposedly had to be paid because the fuel ran out in the desert. Are you liable if something like that happens?
hahha: The fine did not have to be paid because of running out of fuel but because there is a guide requirement in the Sahara, which will be penalized from 2026 with fines up to €1000.- If one participant runs out of diesel in the desert, the guide always has enough in reserve.
