OFFROAD-TRAVEL · TUNISIA
The Unimog Tunisia expedition takes you with your own vehicle from Genoa to the edge of the Sahara.
The Journey
The Unimog Tunisia tour takes you with your expedition vehicle through the south of the country: via Kairouan and Gafsa to the oases of Tozeur, on the dam road over the Chott el Djerid to Douz, into the dunes of Tembaine and to the oasis Ksar Ghilane. The return journey goes over the Dahar mountains and Matmata to the coast. As a Unimog Sahara trip, it relies on campsites with sanitary facilities, a few wild camps, and moderate daily stages. Ideal for expedition mobile Tunisia fans, four-wheel drive camper desert drivers with off-road experience, and everyone who wants to experience Tunisia with a motorhome off the beaten track.
Your Unimog Tunisia expedition begins even before the first grain of sand. All participants receive their information folder in advance with meeting points, equipment list, and tips for preparing the vehicle. Whether you join directly at Overcross in Tübingen, in Switzerland, or only at the port of Genoa is up to you. In the evening, the group meets, and radios are tested.
In the port of Genoa, Unimogs, all-wheel-drive trucks, and expedition vehicles are rolling in. Between 3 PM and 4 PM, the convoy meets, and your Truck Sahara Tour takes shape. At the CNT terminal, you will receive your ferry tickets along with a fast lane sticker. The ferry sets course for the Mediterranean as the lights of Genoa fade into the background.
As soon as Cap Bon appears, the ferry enters the port of La Goulette. Thanks to VIP service, you’ll be on African ground with a stamped passport in about 45 minutes with your Tunisia expedition vehicle. The convoy continues to Hammamet, where you'll spend the first night in a hotel by the sea.
After breakfast, the convoy drives inland, coordinated by radio. In Kairouan, one of the holy cities of Islam, you make a stop, and then the steppes and mountain ranges change until the landscape becomes sparser. In Gafsa, the first camp is set up at a campsite, a quiet start to your 4x4 truck Tunisia trip.
Between mountains, dry riverbeds, and green palm fields, the route leads south to Tozeur, one of the country's most famous oasis towns. The stage runs on asphalt and solid tracks, easily accessible for any Sahara expedition vehicle. Under date palms, you set up camp, in the evening the expedition kitchen prepares Tunisian cuisine.
A film-worthy day: You visit a famous Star Wars set near Tozeur. After that follows the first sand training on manageable terrain: tire pressure according to axle load, starting in the sand, maintaining momentum, and recovery with sand plates and recovery straps. Dune driving with the truck you learn here step by step. In the evening, the first wild camp is created.
On Dammstraße, you cross the Chott el Djerid, one of the largest salt lakes in Africa. White surfaces, reflections, and the mirage accompany the journey, while the road also provides a solid ground for heavy vehicles. In Douz, the gateway to the Sahara, the group settles at a campsite, a place very much in the spirit of Tunisia by motorhome.
Today there is no schedule. You stroll through the market of Douz, check tires, filters and mountain equipment, and fill up water and diesel for the upcoming sandy days. The guides discuss the stages to Tembaine and Ksar Ghilane with each team so that your four-wheel drive desert setup is ready.
Questions about the tour itinerary?
Our tour guide is happy to answer any questions about the day-by-day route, stops, and details.
The convoy moves deeper into the desert to the dunes around Tembaine. The guides set the line according to axle load and sand condition, heavy vehicles travel with additionally reduced tire pressure and in close accompaniment. On foot, you climb the rocky mountain Tembaine and look over the sea of sand. The wild camp is located in the midst of the vastness, an evening for every Unimog Sahara crew.
Today, the sandiest section of the journey awaits. In a team, with radio communication and coordinated tire pressure, the convoy reaches the oasis Ksar Ghilane. Warm springs, palm trees, and a camp for two nights reward this stage. In the evening, lamb and couscous are cooked together, the highlight of your motorhome Sahara Tunisia tour.
A day without moving: bathing in the warm spring, an excursion to the remains of the Roman fortress, and time to tinker with the vehicle. Those who like can practice with the guides in the sandy areas around the oasis. In the evening, you will bake desert bread together and hear stories from nomads, a real off-road truck journey experience.
The convoy leaves the Sahara to the north and rises into the Dahar Mountains. Passing by Berber villages, you reach Matmata with its cave dwellings, the landscape changes from sand to rock. The last camp night offers time to reflect on the stages of your off-road camper journey.
After days of silence, the road returns: Via Gabès and the coastal highway, it goes to Hammamet, where a hotel with an infinity pool awaits. The contrast could not be greater. Luxury now means not gold, but time, and your Unimog Tunisia cabin can take a night off.
Breakfast, drive to Tunis, check-in for the ferry. The formalities go quickly, the ferry Genoa Tunis motorhome loading proceeds as it did on the way there. In the evening at sea, a last共同 meal. Africa sinks behind you, the Sahara stays in your mind.
At noon, Genoa comes into view: engine on, eyes forward, dust in every crack. Your Truck Sahara Tour ends here, but its echo remains: the oases, the rustling of the sand, and the feeling of having experienced something real in the Sahara with your own vehicle.
