ROUND-TRIPS · NEW ZEALAND
Experience a nature adventure trip through New Zealand in a small group! This unique tour offers a variety of activities on land, water, and in the air.
The Journey
An adventure trip for nature lovers that is conducted in a small group. This trip places great value on nature and activities that we will experience on land, on water, and from the air. A journey that has a lot to offer: the most beautiful national parks in New Zealand, islands, volcanoes, and a diverse nature that can only be found in New Zealand.
Warm welcome to New Zealand. After your arrival, your driver will be waiting for you at the airport and will take you to your first accommodation. You have some time to relax after the long flight or to explore Auckland on your own. Around 6:00 PM, you will meet with your fellow travelers and your tour guide at the hotel to discuss the upcoming and exciting next three weeks of your tour.
After breakfast, you will get to know the highlights of Auckland, the "City of Sails," on a city tour. Then we leave Auckland towards the Coromandel Peninsula. We cross the peninsula, which is characterized by bizarre volcanic formations and a typical New Zealand forest full of tree ferns and tea trees. We visit rare Kauri trees, which can be up to 2000 years old, New Zealand's representatives of the Araucariaceae family. In Mercury Bay, we explore the jewels of New Zealand's beaches and hike to popular visitor destinations. On the hike to Cathedral Cove from Hahei, long white sandy beaches invite you to swim in the South Pacific. If you wish, you can dig a pool in the sand at Hot Water Beach during low tide and warm yourself in the underground hot springs. In the cozy seaside resort of Tairua, we can truly relax and get to know each other in a friendly atmosphere over a shared dinner in the evening. Distance: approx. 200km Travel time: approx. 3.5h Meals: Breakfast, Dinner
Our journey today deepens our insight into the exciting geological history of the Coromandel Peninsula. Again and again, we enjoy open views of the coastal landscape with offshore islands, pass the gold mining town of Waihi, the striking Mount Maunganui volcano directly by the sea, expansive kiwi orchards, and beaches until we settle in Whakatane. We will stay two nights in this place shaped by Maori culture in the Bay of Plenty, known for its mild climate and long sandy beaches. Here lies the highly active volcanic island "White Island," according to the "Lonely Planet" guidebook number 5 on the list of the most impressive volcanoes on Earth. Distance: approx. 220km Driving time: approx. 3.5h Meals: Breakfast
You can experience White Island today in various ways: either a comfortable photogenic panoramic flight directly over the crater or up close by boat and a guided geological hiking tour (both optional). We will spend the afternoon and evening in a small group with a local Maori family. For an authentic dinner, we will help build our own earth oven under expert guidance, in which we will later cook our dinner. While we wait for our "Hangi," the traditionally prepared meal, we will learn a lot about the music, art, culture, and history of the Maori during a guided hike. After a communal dinner, we will leave our hosts no longer as strangers but as friends. Meals: Breakfast, Dinner
Through forests and along numerous lakes, we reach the Rotorua region, known for its many highly active thermal springs and geysers. Volcanic events have shaped this region, whose natural wonders we can admire up close in "Waiotapu," the most colorful of the thermal areas. Here we find colorful sinter terraces, the boiling "Champagne Pool," bubbling mud pools, craters, and the stinky vapors of sulfur fumaroles. We continue to the foaming Huka Falls and along Lake Taupo, with views of the three active volcanoes of Tongariro National Park: Mount Tongariro (1968m) with its sister volcanoes Mount Ngauruhoe (2291m) and Mount Ruapehu (2797m). The park has become one of the most popular national parks due to its constantly changing, partly lunar-like landscape and spectacular views. We turn off the main road into the Whanganui River National Park. The drive mainly goes through Maori land along an old postal road. Our accommodation today can only be reached by jet boat. Here, we can look out at the Whanganui River amidst nature. We forgo the standards of city hotels in this seclusion. We conclude the eventful day with a shared dinner. Distance: approx. 350km Driving time: approx. 5.5h Meals: Breakfast, Dinner
After a jet boat ride to the remote "Bridge to Nowhere," we take a guided hike to relics from ancient times. Afterwards, the jet boat takes us back to civilization. The journey continues along the historically significant Whanganui River, on beautiful and little-traveled "backcountry" roads. The strong Māori influence is clearly visible and felt in this hinterland. After countless curves, we reach the city of Whanganui with its stylish "Art Deco" buildings. Along the Kapiti Coast, we arrive in Wellington in the evening. Distance: approx. 310km Travel time: approx. 4.5h Meals: Breakfast
Today you have time to explore the capital of New Zealand on your own. From our centrally located hotel, you can easily reach most attractions on foot: the informative national museum "Te Papa," the cable car up to the botanical garden, the historic wooden church Old St Paul’s, the impressive parliamentary buildings, as well as art galleries. Enjoy a city stroll and the vibrant atmosphere at the harbor. Meals: Breakfast
Early in the morning, we board the Interislander ferry heading towards "Marlborough Sounds" through deeply cut sea channels, a labyrinth of "drowned" river valleys. The area is considered a botanical transition zone between the North and South Islands. We change our mode of transport for the next two days to undertake a nature excursion in remote areas. With a sailing ship and captain, we navigate the Marlborough Sounds, one of the most beautiful sailing areas in New Zealand. Here, in addition to seagulls, we are often followed by cape petrels and dark brown Hall's petrels. Dwarf penguins, dolphins, and New Zealand sea lions are also often found here. After an eventful day, we reach our remote lodge and enjoy an exclusive dinner in a cozy atmosphere. Meals: Breakfast, Dinner
After breakfast, we go back on board the sailing ship. Today, we sail past small coves, deserted beaches, and mountains densely covered with bushes, land on Motuara Island, and observe the rare long-legged waders and saddle starlings in this bird sanctuary. Afterwards, we visit Captain Cook's preferred anchorage "Ship Cove" (the sailing tour sometimes has to be adjusted due to weather conditions). From here, there is the possibility to hike a part of the Queen Charlotte Track. With solid ground under our feet again, we check into our hotel in Picton. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch
We follow the promising Queen Charlotte Drive along the Marlborough Sounds over Nelson to the Abel Tasman National Park with its golden beaches. By boat, we pass numerous bays and coastal forests and then disembark to take a short hike through the national park. This is one of the most popular parks in the country. The boat picks us up again after a swimming stop. New Zealand fur seals can often be observed here. Those who do not wish to hike depending on their daily condition can relax on the beach during that time or take another boat excursion option (upon request). Distance: approx. 175km Travel time: approx. 3h Meals: Breakfast
On the way to the West Coast, we cross the spectacular Buller Gorge. We experience an impressive change in the plant world and reach subtropical lowland rainforest. Between Westport and Greymouth, a wild romantic landscape awaits you. Running parallel to the coast is the fold mountain belt of Paparoa National Park, rising up to 1500 meters. Our hotel is located right on the beach in Punakaiki. Distance: about 270km Travel time: about 4h Meals: Breakfast
Questions about the tour itinerary?
Our tour guide is happy to answer any questions about the day-by-day route, stops, and details.
In the morning we visit the famous "Pancake Rocks," limestone formations whose softer intermediate layers are constantly being washed away by the roaring Tasman Sea, causing the rock formations to appear as stacked layers. After a stop in the jade city of Hokitika, we continue along the west coast. “... a large, highly raised landmass ...” wrote the Dutchman Abel Tasman in his ship's log when he sighted New Zealand as the first European in December 1642. His comment undoubtedly referred to the distinctive, elongated mountain range of the Southern Alps. South of Hokitika, their peaks rise abruptly to a height of 3500 meters. In Franz Josef Town, we are within reach of the glaciers of the Southern Alps. We take a short excursion in the glacier region (weather permitting). The approximately eleven-kilometer-long Fox Glacier pushes down to an altitude of 300 meters above sea level. Distance: approx. 280km Travel time: approx. 3.5h Meals: Breakfast
In the early morning, we invite you to take a helicopter tour over the glacier world of the Southern Alps, which you surely won't forget quickly. After landing on the glacier, you can turn your attention to the numerous photo opportunities. As a natural weather barrier, the high mountain ridge is responsible for one of the most extreme precipitation regimes. Above the snow line, large masses of ice accumulate, forming rapidly flowing valley glaciers. We continue through the "most beautiful rainforest road in the world." For shorter walks through dense evergreen southern beech, Rimu, and Kahikatea rainforest, to waterfalls and the open coast of the roaring Tasman Sea, we make frequent stops. Over the Haast Pass, climate and watershed of the Southern Alps, past the high mountains of Aspiring National Park, we reach Wanaka by the same name glacier lake. After a short stop in this picturesque location, we travel along a spectacular high alpine route in the hinterland, the "Crown Range," through imposing ancient landscapes with sparse tussock vegetation (bulb grass). We will spend two nights in Queenstown, not far from Lake Wakatipu. This beautiful lake, with its surrounding impressive mountains, defines the landscape of Queenstown. Distance: approx. 340km Travel time: approx. 5h Meals: Breakfast
We spend today in Queenstown, the "St. Moritz of the South Seas," as this popular holiday destination is often called. The day is free for you to enjoy at your leisure. You have the difficult choice of trying one of the countless options available. Maybe you would like to take a ride on the old steamship “TSS Earnslaw” on Lake Wakatipu, or you can take a cable car and enjoy the magnificent view of the town and the lake. You can also join a tour tracing the filming locations of “The Lord of the Rings,” go horseback riding, hiking, or take a rafting tour (all activities optional). Your tour guide is available to assist you. Meals: Breakfast
You travel through Fiordland National Park, New Zealand's largest and yet most unspoiled national park. Hardly any landscape embodies the term wilderness better than Fiordland. In the west, 14 fiords penetrate like elongated sea tongues deep into the primeval forests of a rugged alpine world. Not far from there, snow-capped mountain peaks rise above alpine grasslands up to 2700 meters. You first drive to Te Anau, the gateway to Milford Sound. In the afternoon, you have the opportunity for a special tour (optional): On the west shore of Lake Te Anau, hidden beneath the mountains, lies a large underground cave system illuminated by thousands of glowworms. Don't miss this experience. Alternatively, you can optionally participate in a jet boat tour on the river between Lake Manapouri and Lake Te Anau, which takes you to famous and spectacular filming locations of the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy. Distance: approx. 171km Travel time: approx. 2.5h Meals: Breakfast
Today, another highlight is on the agenda! On the possibly most beautiful mountain road in New Zealand to Milford, you pass the Mirror Lakes and the gloomy Homer Tunnel, and during a stop, you may even encounter Kea parrots. Around noon, you then reach the landmark of New Zealand and the most beautiful end of the world, Milford Sound. The fjord was formed by the 1200-meter deep incision of a glacier, which, after melting, left behind a massive furrow that was then filled by the sea. A lush vegetation is outlined in front of the reflective fjord, and in the background, a colossal mountain ("Mitre Peak," the "Bishop's Hat") rises 1700 meters from the sea. On a boat trip past huge, foaming waterfalls, one might encounter seals, penguins, and dolphins with a bit of luck. We stay overnight again in Te Anau by the lake, surrounded by mountains and rainforest. Distance: approx. 236km Duration: approx. 4.5h Meals: Breakfast, Lunch
After breakfast, we leave Fiordland National Park. The road climbs over the Lindis Pass through the Mackenzie Country. Sparse precipitation makes this highland appear as a barren steppe landscape. Wide “tussock” fields, which span the hills like a carpet, transform the landscape into a strangely graceful inner-alpine basin landscape. Continue to Mount Cook Village, where we spend the night in a cozy facility surrounded by gigantic mountains. The Maori call New Zealand's highest mountain at 3724 meters “Aoraki,” the “Sky Piercer.” Upon arrival at our lodge for the night, we prepare a typical New Zealand barbecue together with the tour guide and have dinner together. Distance: approx. 430km Duration: approx. 6h Meals: breakfast, dinner
According to the weather conditions, we will undertake a light hike in the impressive mountain world. We will again have the opportunity to admire the grandiose glacier world of Mount Cook at the Pukaki and Tekapo lakes. Next, we will drive into the Canterbury Plains and leave behind the three-thousanders of the Southern Alps. Here, we will once again experience a spectacular change in vegetation. The plain is one of New Zealand's most fertile farming areas. In the early evening, we will visit a stylish farm, where we will gain insight into the lives and work of the New Zealand rural population on a farm tour. We will stay in different rural guesthouses with warm hosts. The day will end here in a cozy manner with a delicious dinner. Distance: approx. 150km Travel time: approx. 2.5h Meals: Breakfast, Dinner
In “Peel Forest” we once again follow a nature trail to study endemic plants and birds. Then we continue towards the Rakaia River and through the Canterbury Plains to the “Banks Peninsula.” This peninsula was formed by volcanic activity. Depending on the time available to us, we will take an easy hike where we can experience New Zealand's nature up close once again. Sometimes we can spot surfing Hector dolphins along the coast. The extremely rare Hector dolphins are the smallest marine dolphins and are only found in New Zealand waters. In Akaroa, the only former French settlement, we will spend the night in a hotel on the waterfront and end the day with a group dinner. Distance: approx. 240km Travel time: approx. 2.5h Meals: Breakfast, Dinner
Our path leads us to Christchurch over the mountains of the crater rim of the peninsula. We take a short city tour through the 'Garden City' of New Zealand, as Christchurch is also fondly called. You can take a ride on the historic tram (optional), visit the newly constructed cathedral, the "Re:Start" shopping street, the Arts and Crafts Centre (partially closed), and the museum next to the award-winning Botanical Garden. Or you can independently explore this re-emerging city in constant change on a stroll. Today is the last evening of your journey and we invite you to a dinner where you can reflect on the exciting past weeks with your fellow travelers. Distance: approximately 100km Travel time: approximately 4h Meals: Breakfast, Dinner
Today your New Zealand trip ends. You will be taken to the airport by transfer. We wish you a good return or onward flight. Meals: Breakfast
