Arriving in Morocco

The first warm breeze at the harbor signals: The adventure begins.

After arriving in Tangier, we drive to our meeting point, where the off-road vehicles are already ready.

In the evening, we sit together, talk about the upcoming stages, and feel how quickly strangers become a team.

Stage: short connection, asphalt

We roll southward and leave the coastal air behind us. The roads become quieter until the towers of Fès appear.

In the alleys of the Medina, it smells of spices, wood smoke, and leather - a first step into the world of Morocco. In the evening, we cook together at the campsite and enjoy the calm before the big departure.

Stage: about 300 km, connection stage

Fès - Atlas: Departure into off-road

Fès - Atlas: Departure into off-road

The asphalt is decreasing, the landscape is widening. We leave the road and follow gravel tracks that stretch across barren high plains.

In an abandoned mining ghost town, we set up our first wild camp: sunset, silence, campfire.

Stage: about 200 km, gravel & stone

Crossing the Atlas - Erg Chebbi

Crossing the Atlas - Erg Chebbi

Today the journey to the Sahara begins. We cross the Middle and High Atlas, drive through rugged landscapes, and in the afternoon reach the first dunes of the Erg Chebbi.

A swim in the pool against this backdrop feels like a small reward after a long day of driving.

Stage: approx. 290 km, asphalt & tracks

Erg Chebbi: Sand training & dune feeling

Erg Chebbi: Sand training & dune feeling

The day belongs to the sand. After a short briefing, we test the 4x4 systems, play with tire pressure and line choice, and gradually venture deeper into the sea of dunes.

Anyone who wants a break can enjoy the pool, camels, or silence - you decide what your desert day looks like.

Stage: 50-60 km, sand & dunes

After a final look at the sea of dunes, we replenish our supplies and follow old riverbeds, stone deserts, and long sandy tracks southward.

Somewhere in the middle of nowhere, we set up our wild camp. Stars without light pollution, fire without background noise - a classic overlanding evening.

Stage: approx. 180 km, track & stone

Into the Sahara: Mhamid - Erg Chegaga

Into the Sahara: Mhamid - Erg Chegaga

The way to Erg Chegaga is rougher, wilder, more honest. Sand and stone alternate, vehicles dig in briefly, shovels and teamwork are part of it.

The higher dunes of Chegaga challenge us, but that's exactly why we are here. The camp is being set up in the middle of the dune ridge.

Stage: approx. 180 km, sand, track, dunes

Erg Chegaga - Foum Zguid

We fight our way out of the dune field, cross the dried-up Lac Iriki, and drive over flat stone tracks towards civilization. A military post, a last piece of desert, then we reach Foum Zguid and enjoy the first proper shower in days. Stage: approx. 100 km, sand, track, salt lake

Notes:
  • All our travel descriptions are to be understood merely as tour suggestions. The exact itinerary can be adjusted to the current conditions on site, although we always strive to adhere to the described itinerary.
  • On some stages, especially in the Khenifra National Park, the paths lead through dense forests and underbrush, and contact with branches may occur. One or two small scratches cannot always be avoided.
  • The infrastructure in Morocco is rapidly expanding, so it may be that even small roads that were simple gravel paths the previous year are now paved. However, our guide will always try to choose the route and, if necessary, adjust it to ensure that the off-road driving pleasure is not too short. Longer paved stages are still unavoidable, especially the connection stages on our way south. Off-road driving fun is guaranteed nonetheless!
  • Do I need my own vehicle?
Yes, the tour is intended for participants with their own 4x4 vehicle.
  • How do I get there?
Traveling is individual, but there is support for ferry booking from Algeciras to Tangier.
  • Where will we be staying?
All overnight stays in Morocco are outdoors (either at camping sites or wild camping in the desert).
  • What equipment do I need for the off-road trip in Morocco?
A suitable 4x4 vehicle with a roof tent or camping gear is necessary. Additionally, a sleeping bag, sleeping mat, and personal camping equipment are advisable.
  • How difficult is the route?
The off-road routes in Morocco range from easy gravel paths to challenging dune drives. Thanks to our experienced guides, the tour is also doable for off-road beginners.
  • What highlights can I expect?
The royal city of Fès, the sea of dunes Erg Chebbi, the desert area Erg Chegaga, oases like Mhamid, the Atlas Mountains, and the UNESCO site Aït Benhaddou are among the highlights of this Morocco off-road trip.
  • What meals are provided?
In the evenings, we often cook together by the campfire. Occasionally, we enjoy Moroccan specialties like couscous or tajine in local restaurants.
  • Can I extend the Morocco off-road tour?
Yes, many participants stay on for days in Tangier or Marrakech after the tour. We are happy to advise you on individual extensions.
