How long is the tour?

The tour lasts 17 days with 16 nights: 14 nights in hotels and 2 nights at the Amazon jungle lodge. Day 1 is the arrival day in Arequipa, day 17 the departure day.

Who is the tour suitable for?

Experienced riders who ride regularly. No special off-road experience is needed, as the route is predominantly paved. The tour is not suitable for beginners due to the altitude and the long daily stages.

Where do we start and finish?

Start and finish is Arequipa. Airport transfers are included in the tour price.

What are the highlights?

Is the flight over the Nasca Lines included?

No. The roughly half-hour sightseeing flight over the Nasca Lines on day 3 is an optional extra and is not included in the tour price. You can book it with us locally.

What are the entry requirements for tourists from the EU and Switzerland?

Travellers from the EU and Switzerland need a passport valid for at least six months beyond the departure date. No visa is required for stays of up to 90 days.

Which vaccinations are recommended?

Check your standard vaccinations and refresh them if necessary. A hepatitis A vaccination is additionally recommended for Peru. For personal advice, consult your family doctor or a travel medicine specialist.

Will I be picked up at the airport?

Yes. We wait for you in the arrivals hall and are easy to recognise. Please do not leave the hall until we have found each other. We track your flight online and react to changes in arrival time.

What do you recommend regarding travel insurance?

Check whether your health and accident insurance also applies abroad and supplement it if necessary with trip cancellation, repatriation and legal protection. Make sure it has worldwide validity and note down the emergency numbers.

What are the accommodations like?

We stay in carefully selected 2- and 3-star hotels with clean rooms, shower, WC and a good breakfast. Two nights are spent at a jungle lodge in the Amazon. Single and double rooms are bookable; double rooms are only suitable for travellers who know each other.

Do I need an international driving licence?

Yes. You need both your national and your international driving licence. Be sure to check the validity of both documents before departure.

Will I be reachable by mobile phone on the road?

In larger towns and mostly on the route as well you will have reception. Affordable travel tariffs are worthwhile; clarify this in advance with your provider. Most hotels offer free Wi-Fi.

What is the condition of the roads?

This tour runs predominantly on well-built asphalt. There are short gravel sections in the Paracas National Park as well as occasional unsealed stretches between Ayacucho and Andahuaylas and in the Sacred Valley. Tolls apply on main roads, from which motorcycles are often exempt – any tolls incurred are included in the tour price.

What risks should I expect in road traffic?

The risks depend on the stage. Daily briefings lower the accident risk. Traffic in large cities is lively and in the countryside animals roam freely. We recommend defensive riding, full protective gear and zero alcohol.

Larger cities such as Arequipa, Cusco and Puno have well-equipped clinics. In rural regions care is limited. Comprehensive travel insurance with an emergency number is mandatory for this long-haul trip.

What is the best time to travel?

There is no single best time, as Peru has several climate zones. April to October is ideal in the Andean highlands because there is little rain then. We align our tour calendar with climate and weather.

How does the altitude affect me?

At altitude, headaches, fatigue or shortness of breath can occur. The highest point of the trip is the Patapampa pass at 4,910 metres on day 15. Our stages are designed for slow acclimatisation. Drinking plenty, coca tea and 'Sorojchi' tablets help. We carry an oximeter and a blood pressure monitor.

Do I need to budget for fuel?

No. Fuel for the rental motorcycle is included in the tour price for the entire tour, as are road tolls. You do not need to set aside any extra budget for this.

What motorcycle will we be riding?

You ride this tour on either the CFmoto 450MT or the Honda NX500, two lightweight and versatile adventure enduros. Both are nimble and comfortable and handle the predominantly paved Andean roads of this tour with ease.

What language does the guide speak?

You are accompanied by a multilingual tour guide on a motorcycle plus a support vehicle with driver/mechanic. If you would like to know which languages will actually be spoken on your preferred departure, please ask us before booking.

How many seats are available in the support vehicle?

Usually only one seat (a maximum of two) is available in the support vehicle. It is allocated on a first come, first served basis.

Can the tour also be done by car?

Yes, that is easily possible and many participants enjoy it. Everything is organised just as well as for the motorcycle group. We are happy to create offers for 2 to 6 people.

Days 1–16

Arrival in Arequipa

Welcome to Peru! On arrival in Arequipa, the vibrant colonial city in southern Peru, we pick you up from the airport and take you to the hotel. Your guide holds a briefing covering the route, the paperwork and the motorcycle security deposit. The rest of the day is yours at leisure.

Arequipa – Puerto Inka

Time to start our engines! Getting out of the city is the first challenge. After around 50 km we reach the Panamericana and follow it northbound. After 140 km we drop to sea level on the Pacific coast and ride all the way to Puerto Inka – a wonderful hotel right next to Inca ruins that your guide will show you in the evening.

Puerto Inka – Nasca

We follow the Panamericana through one of the driest deserts in the world to Nasca, world-famous for its geoglyphs that are only recognisable from the air. In the afternoon you have the option of a roughly half-hour sightseeing flight over the pampa. The flight is optional and not included in the tour price – you can book it with us locally.

Nasca – Huacachina

On through the bone-dry desert to the most beautiful oasis in the Americas: Huacachina. Palm trees, a lagoon and towering sand dunes all around. In the afternoon dune buggy rides and sandboarding are on the programme.

Distance: 150 km | Road: paved | Altitude: 500 m → 400 m

Huacachina – Paracas

Back to the coast and the little fishing town of Paracas. A boat trip to the Islas Ballestas – the 'poor man's Galapagos' – is on the programme and is included in the tour price. Afterwards we explore the Paracas National Park on the motorcycles.

Paracas – Ayacucho

A long, spectacular riding day: we leave the desert behind and climb into the mighty Andes. Soon we are at serious altitude on well-built winding roads. We end the day in Ayacucho.

Distance: 360 km | Road: paved | Altitude: sea level → 2,800 m

Ayacucho – Andahuaylas

A long ride through the heart of the Andes – predominantly paved, but with possible gravel stretches. High mountains and deep ravines accompany us. This is what motorcycling is about!

Distance: 235 km | Road: predominantly paved | Altitude: 2,800 m → 2,400 m

Andahuaylas – Ollantaytambo

The road is not straight for a single mile. We cross the Andes again on twisting roads and ride via Urubamba into the Sacred Valley of the Incas. The day ends in Ollantaytambo, famous for its massive Inca fortress.

Machu Picchu

The absolute highlight of the tour: Machu Picchu. There is still no road to this magical place. Early in the morning we take the train to Aguas Calientes and from there a bus to the entrance of the citadel. Train and bus tickets as well as the entrance fee are included in the tour price. After the visit we return to Ollantaytambo by train.

Ollantaytambo – Cusco

From Ollantaytambo we ride through the Sacred Valley of the Incas and visit various Inca ruins. We end the day in the ancient capital of the Inca Empire: Cusco, the Navel of the World.

Distance: 80 km | Road: predominantly paved, possible gravel | Altitude: 2,800 m → 3,500 m

Days 11–12: Amazon jungle, Puerto Maldonado

We leave the motorcycles in Cusco and fly to Puerto Maldonado. Our lodge team takes us to the river docks, from where a boat carries us deep into the Amazon jungle. We stay at the lodge for two nights – all meals and excursions included. With a bit of luck you might spot a jaguar!

Return to Cusco

We leave the lodge early for the return flight to Cusco. The rest of the day is free – perfect for exploring markets, restaurants and colonial plazas.

Cusco – Puno

Back on the motorcycles! A magnificent ride across the Altiplano to the town on the shores of Lake Titicaca: Puno. We pass Sicuani and Juliaca – the latter an unforgettable experience with chaotic traffic.

Puno – Chivay

Early morning boat trip on Lake Titicaca to the world-famous floating islands of the Uros – included in the tour price. Back on the motorcycles we cross the Andes once more towards the Colca Canyon, over the Patapampa pass at 4,910 metres, the highest point of the journey. We spend the night near Chivay, where hot springs await.

Colca Canyon – Arequipa

An early start – the condors will not wait. After about an hour we reach Cruz del Condor in the heart of the Colca Canyon and watch Andean condors in free flight. Entrance to the Colca Canyon is included. Afterwards we ride back to Arequipa, closing the great loop.
