Safari 22 days Overland truck
This East Africa safari round trip starts in Nairobi and combines Serengeti Ngorongoro safari with coast and culture. In Tanzania, you will search for the Big Five on game drives and go into the Ngorongoro Crater.
The Journey
This East Africa safari round trip takes you in 22 days from Nairobi to the Victoria Falls in Livingstone. Traveling by camping safari or lodge safari in an overland truck, you cross through Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, and Zambia. You wake up early for game drives in the Serengeti, look for lions and elephants on the Big Five safari in Tanzania, and descend into the Ngorongoro Crater. Afterwards, you visit Zanzibar with its beach and Stone Town, Lake Malawi for snorkeling, and the South Luangwa National Park with walking safaris during the dry season. Along the way, you share genuine encounters with the Maasai. Camping, marveling, feeling good, pure adventure.
What the itinerary names. Wild animals cannot be ordered, but the parks, the season and the hours at the water are chosen so the odds are good.
Your East Africa safari tour begins in Nairobi. You leave the hustle and bustle of the city behind and head south to the Tanzanian border. After the border formalities, you continue to the lively city of Arusha, your base for the night. Northern Tanzania is the gateway to the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater, and Kilimanjaro.
Today the Serengeti Ngorongoro Safari begins in earnest: In the early morning you will be picked up in safari vehicles and leave Arusha. It goes directly to Serengeti National Park. In the afternoon you will reach the camp in the Seronera region, in the heart of the Serengeti. In the evening, you can enjoy the sounds of the wilderness right outside your Meru-style tent with a cold drink.
You wake up early and spend an entire day on a safari in Serengeti National Park. The Serengeti is known for its enormous animal density, and on the Big Five safari in Tanzania, you keep an eye out for lions, elephants, and the other animals that call this place home.
In the morning you drive to the Ngorongoro Crater Safari. In the Conservation Area, you go down to the crater floor, where you search the plains for wildlife, from lions and rhinos to flamingos. After the exploration, you leave the crater and drive the short distance to Karatu, where you will spend the night.
After departing from Karatu, you will visit the Mto wa Mbu Market on this camping safari in East Africa. The region is known for its agriculture, such as rice and the typical red bananas. The drive takes you through fertile highlands, coffee plantations, open savannas, and small villages until you reach the green foothills around Moshi. You will relax in the evening with a view of Kilimanjaro, if the weather permits.
You set off early in the morning and travel on this overland truck safari towards the coast to Bagamoyo, your accommodation for the night. The day is mainly a travel day; along the way, you get many impressions of everyday life along one of the most important routes in East Africa. In the evening, you prepare for the Zanzibar adventure that begins tomorrow.
You leave Bagamoyo and drive to Dar es Salaam to the ferry port. You take the ferry to Zanzibar. After arrival, you head to the east coast of the island, where you spend the next two nights at a beach resort. This Zanzibar beach and safari combines sea and discovery: relax by the infinity pool or explore the surroundings by bike.
Today is a free day in Zanzibar. Use the time for excursions and activities on the island or enjoy the Zanzibar beach and safari in peace. Lie in the sun, swim in the warm water, or book an optional boat tour along the coast.
In the morning you drive to Stone Town. On the way, you participate in a guided Zanzibar spice tour that leads through villages and spice plantations. You see how the workers climb the trees and buy fresh spices on-site. Afterwards, you reach Stone Town, a historic port city along the former spice and trade routes. During a walk, you discover well-known spots, including the birthplace of Freddie Mercury.
You say goodbye to Zanzibar, take the ferry back to the mainland, and drive to your accommodation. On this group trip to East Africa, you will spend the night in Dar es Salaam or in Bagamoyo, depending on the itinerary, before heading further inland the next day.
You leave the coast behind and travel inland to Mikumi in an Overland Truck, where you will stay for the next two nights. The Mikumi National Park is the fourth largest park in Tanzania and part of a wilderness area of approximately 75,000 square kilometers surrounding Selous, Africa's largest game reserve.
Questions about the tour itinerary?
Our tour guide is happy to answer any questions about the day-by-day route, stops, and details.
Today you have the opportunity to book additional safaris in Mikumi National Park and to look for wildlife on another Big Five safari in Tanzania. Alternatively, you can participate in one of the cultural excursions in the area.
Next it's on to Iringa, a town on a cliff overlooking the Ruaha River Valley. In the center, you'll find German colonial buildings and a bustling market; the Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery commemorates fallen soldiers. Before that, the group trip to East Africa briefly stops in the Baobab Valley, a landscape with mighty, ancient baobab trees, perfect for a group photo.
Today you will continue your journey in the Overland Truck to the Mbeya Region. In the afternoon, you will stop at a local coffee plantation, see the process of cultivation and harvesting, and taste some freshly roasted beans before crossing the border into Malawi the next day.
You leave Tanzania behind, drive down the Great Rift Valley and cross the border into Malawi, the warm heart of Africa. The destination is the shores of Lake Malawi in the northern region. While snorkeling in Lake Malawi, you can see the colorful tropical cichlids up close in the clear water.
In the morning you get into the truck and your Lake Malawi journey continues south along Lake Malawi. The lake extends for more than 500 kilometers along Malawi's western border and is home to more fish species than any other lake in the world. You spend the night right on the shore of this natural wonder.
Another day at your disposal by the lake. Your Lake Malawi trip takes a break: Read a book, enjoy the sun or take advantage of the offers and activities on site, from kayaking to the next round of snorkeling in the clear water.
You experience the sunrise at Lake Malawi once more and then travel to Zambia to the South Luangwa National Park. After crossing the border, you make a short stop in Chipata and reach your camp on the banks of the Luangwa River, where the South Luangwa Walking Safari awaits you. In the evening, you enjoy a sunset over the river.
South Luangwa is a first-class safari destination, and you have a whole day to explore the park. In the morning, you can participate in an optional game drive or, during the dry season from April to December, a South Luangwa Walking Safari. In the afternoon, there is a sunset drive with sundowner. At night, the chance to see shy nocturnal animals that are rarely spotted during the day increases.
You leave the Luangwa Valley and stop at Mulberry Mongoose to see local jewelry and curios. These pieces are handmade by women from the South Luangwa region using organic materials from the African bush. Around Chipata, cotton is an important product, and the group tour East Africa gives you an impression of local creativity. Overnight stay in the small town of Petauke.
On the Great East Road, an important connection between Lusaka and neighboring Malawi, the Overland Truck Safari takes you through rural Zambia. Along the way, you cross the Luangwa River. Villages, subsistence farms, and vast landscapes characterize the route and provide a strong contrast to many guests' home countries.
You cross the southern part of Zambia and reach Livingstone, the adventure city right by the Victoria Falls. In the afternoon, you see the mighty waterfalls for the first time, called Musi oa Tunya by locals, the smoke that thunders. In Livingstone, many optional activities await, which can be booked upon arrival. Your East Africa safari round trip ends at the Victoria Falls in Livingstone.
