MOTORCYCLE-TRIPS · ASIA
On this enduro tour in the Philippines you ride across Negros, Siquijor and Bohol, a motorcycle trip packed with off-road tracks, mud and wobbly suspension bridges.
The Journey
The Philippines is made up of more than 7,000 islands, and the Visayas are among the most varied of them. On this off-road motorcycle tour of the Philippines you start in Dumaguete on Negros and work your way over gravel, river crossings and mountain tracks all the way to Siquijor and Bohol. You ride an enduro built for loose surfaces, with a guide who knows the hidden trails. No mass tourism, just red earth, sugar cane fields and villages that hardly any traveller ever sees.
Philippines
Pure enduro in the Philippines: this motorcycle trip takes you across Negros, Siquijor and Bohol. Between off-road tracks, volcanoes, waterfalls and lonely beaches you experience the Visayas away from the tourist routes, with an experienced guide and plenty of red earth under your tyres.
Welcome to Negros and the start of your enduro tour in the Philippines. Dumaguete is known as the “City of Gentle People”, an old Spanish port whose name comes from the word dagit (to snatch), because pirates used to strike here. Today things are more relaxed: you check into your hotel, have lunch and settle in. If you like, jump into the hot springs of Dauin, where bubbles of volcanic methane make the pools simmer.
On this motorcycle trip across Negros you climb from Dumaguete up to Valencia, past the Japanese Shrine built during the Second World War, with views over the surrounding islands. Then you wind into the Red River Valley. Along the way you see geothermal power plants that have supplied the island with electricity since the 1980s: a volcano that produces energy instead of lava. You end the evening in the hot springs or at the Red Rock Pools.
Today shows why this off-road motorcycle tour of the Philippines is rated Expert: loose gravel tracks, flooded bridges and mud. You ride through the jungle to Pamplona, where lunch at Café Alicia comes with the finest panoramic view over the mountains. The return leg runs via Santa Catalina. An optional stop at the Monkey Sanctuary, a reserve for wild monkey troops, is well worth it. Around half of the stage runs off paved roads.
A day of bends on your motorcycle trip across Negros. At the foot of the mountain an 18 megawatt solar plant powers a sugar cane mill, and along the way you meet ancient sugar cane trucks. At Nihudlan Falls, the largest waterfall in the region, you can walk along the top. You then roll on towards Bayawan, once the most important sugar export port. Lordes' hidden waterfall lies like a green oasis in the middle of the jungle.
An early start: harbour, boat, across to Siquijor. This stage of your motorcycle tour of Negros, Siquijor and Bohol takes you to the island known for mysticism and healers, where Catholic tradition meets old shamanic rituals. You visit the ancient balete tree, said to be home to spirits, plus a fish spa and stalls selling voodoo dolls. Then it is on to waterfalls such as Kabugahayan and the beaches of San Juan. In the evening the sun sets over the sea.
Questions about the tour itinerary?
Our tour guide is happy to answer any questions about the day-by-day route, stops, and details.
A relaxed day on Siquijor, the quiet side of your enduro trip in the Philippines. Next to Paliton Beach the Cantabon Caves await with dripstone formations that villagers regard as a sacred place. If you like, swim in the crystal clear water deep inside the cave. Otherwise the day belongs to the beach, the sea and doing nothing, before tough trails wait for you again the next morning.
From San Juan the boat takes you back to Negros, and your motorcycle trip across Negros gets serious once more: mud, red earth, river crossings and a wobbly 35 metre suspension bridge that only knows courage and balance. You refuel at lunchtime in Bayawan, followed by 110 kilometres of coastal road to Sipalay, once a gold mining village and today known for secluded bays. Overnight at Sugar Beach.
A rest day on your enduro tour in the Philippines: relax on the beach or explore the coast by boat and swim in hidden caves. Sipalay was once a Spanish trading post and is now a fishing village with quiet bays. Perfect for winding down before the last big off-road stage, putting your feet up and feeling the sand between your toes.
The last big off-road stage of this motorcycle trip in the Philippines: the Candoni region is barely touristy, unspoilt and full of small villages. Through sugar cane fields and over mountain tracks you ride to Kabankalan and Mabinay, where caves riddle the ground like Swiss cheese. At the end of the day you roll back into Dumaguete: dust on your face, 300 kilometres in your bones.
The last day of your motorcycle trip across Negros, Siquijor and Bohol is yours. Optionally you ride to Turtle Island near Bais, a nesting site for sea turtles, or snorkel along the rock walls of Tambobo Bay, where round-the-world sailors moor their boats, a meeting point for sea nomads and dropouts. Then it is time to switch off or move on. See you on the next tour.
