Motorcycle tours Romania with us means setting off from Bucharest or Sibiu in the morning, riding the hairpins of the Transfagarasan by noon and ending the day at Lake Bâlea, above 2,000 m.
For us, Romania by motorcycle means the Southern Carpathians: two high mountain roads, the Transfagarasan above 2,000 m and the Transalpina at 2,145 m, plus Sibiu, Bran Castle and Bucharest as start and finish. We have two tours, both 8 days. The guided motorcycle tour through the Carpathians costs from €2,099 with your own motorcycle in a double room, or from €2,649 with a rental motorcycle; a guide rides ahead on a motorcycle, a support vehicle carries the luggage, and you spend one night in a 5-star manor house. The self-guided version costs €1,989 including a BMW F650, F700 or F800 GS, GPS and roadbook; an upgrade to the R1200GS Adventure costs €269. Dates in 2027: guided on 13 June and 11 July, self-guided on 29 May and 4 September. Along the way you ride over the Rucar-Bran Pass into Transylvania, sleep at Lake Bâlea, have a culture day in Hermannstadt (Sibiu) and take the Transalpina on the second to last day. Groups on the guided tour are 3 to 12 riders; the self-guided tour you can book even on your own.
Both Romania tours run on asphalt. You don't need off-road experience, but you do need confident cornering: the Transfagarasan and Transalpina are serpentine roads above 2,000 m, with hairpin bends and tunnels. We rate both tours as medium riding level.
On the guided tour you ride your own motorcycle or a current BMW motorcycle of your choice, which costs from €2,649 instead of from €2,099. A guide rides ahead on a motorcycle, and a support vehicle carries your luggage and has room for a lift if you want to skip a stage. The group has 3 to 12 riders. On the self-guided tour a BMW F650, F700 or F800 GS is included in the price, and with GPS, map and roadbook you ride at your own pace; the R1200GS Adventure is available for a €269 surcharge.
A day looks like this: breakfast at the hotel, then a stage over one of the passes with stops at viewpoints, at Bran Castle or in Sibiu, and another hotel in the evening. Start and finish is Bucharest, the airport transfer is included on both tours, and the kilometres are unlimited.
No off-road experience needed, both tours are on asphalt. You should bring confident cornering technique for serpentine roads above 2,000 m; both tours are rated as medium riding level.

Both tours ride the same loop from Bucharest through the Southern Carpathians: two high passes and a culture day in Sibiu, with the passes open only in summer.
Romania's best-known pass road: serpentines, tunnels and hairpin bends straight across the Carpathians to over 2,000 m. On the guided tour you sleep right at Lake Bâlea, and on the self-guided tour you ride the pass on the fifth day.
At 2,145 m, the highest road in the country. Both tours ride it on the sixth day; the self-guided tour then continues to the mountain resort of Rânca at about 1,600 m, while the guided tour ends the day at a winery.
The cultural part of the loop: over the Rucar-Bran Pass into the heart of the Carpathians, Bran Castle, then Hermannstadt (Sibiu) with a culture day of its own on the guided tour. On the way, the self-guided route takes in the Slănic Prahova salt mine.
The high passes Transfagarasan and Transalpina are usually open from June to October. Our dates in 2027: guided on 13 June and 11 July, self-guided on 29 May and 4 September.
