The park was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003 and is one of the few reserves in southern Africa protecting both black and white rhinoceros. The group travels east to Masvingo and the ruins of Great Zimbabwe, a UNESCO World Heritage Site dating from the 11th to 15th centuries and the former capital of the Kingdom of Zimbabwe.
