MOTORCYCLE-TRIPS · SRI LANKA
Discover the highlights of Sri Lanka on an adventurous motorcycle journey. You’ll start in Colombo/Negombo, explore centuries-old Buddhist temples, and ride through endless tea plantations around Kandy and Nuwara Eliya.
The Journey
Your motorcycle adventure through Sri Lanka begins in Colombo/Negombo. From here, you’ll ride through the heart and south of the island, experiencing Buddhist antiquity up close at several impressive temples. In the central Sri Lankan highlands, you’ll cross the famous tea plantations, learn about tea production, and visit various national parks. The route takes you along tarmac roads as well as off the beaten track through small villages and rice fields, making it the perfect way to truly discover Sri Lanka by motorcycle.
Sri Lanka
Your Sri Lanka motorcycle tour takes you in nine days from Colombo/Negombo via Kalpitiya, Dambulla, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Ella to the national parks of the south. Between temples, tea plantations and off-road tracks, you will experience the full diversity of the island on two wheels.
Depending on your airline, you will arrive at Colombo airport in the morning or afternoon. After about 20 minutes' drive you will reach your hotel in the centre of Negombo. In the afternoon you will collect your motorcycles from the garage and meet the mechanic and driver who will accompany your motorcycle tour through Sri Lanka. This is a relaxed and well-prepared start to your Sri Lanka motorcycle adventure.
Leaving Negombo, it soon becomes peaceful as you turn off the main road onto quieter backroads. Part of the route takes you along the coastal road, past numerous shrimp farms, then your Sri Lanka motorcycle tour continues north through an oasis of palm plantations towards Kalpitiya. The area is popular with kite and windsurfers, so there are plenty of laid-back resorts here. From your resort you can walk to the beach or watch the surfers in the lagoon.
Today your motorcycle journey heads east into the interior. Before long, you swap the main road for smaller, partly unpaved roads. The area is dotted with lakes and wide rice fields, offering you beautiful views along the way. Travelling Sri Lanka by motorcycle here means above all relaxed riding through unspoilt landscapes. Your hotel with swimming pool is located on the edge of the lively town of Dambulla.
The day begins with a ride along the large Parakrama Samudra Lake. Afterwards, you pass through several villages towards the Knuckles Forest Reserve. You ride uphill on the old road, stopping several times to enjoy the views. Before reaching Kandy, you take a scenic loop through the tea plantations. Kandy is famous for the Temple of the Tooth, where a tooth relic of Buddha is kept. Today your Sri Lanka motorcycle tour ends at a hotel with a pool and views across the valley.
You leave bustling Kandy via the main road. The further you ride, the quieter it becomes. After 18 hairpin bends, you turn off and continue at a relaxed pace along small roads, this time surrounded by rice fields. Through the Victoria-Randenigala-Rantembe Sanctuary, you climb again until you find yourself in the middle of a vast tea plantation. This stage of your Sri Lanka motorcycle tour ends at a hotel just outside Nuwara Eliya.
Questions about the tour itinerary?
Our tour guide is happy to answer any questions about the day-by-day route, stops, and details.
Leaving Nuwara Eliya, you quickly leave the main road behind to explore the tea plantations and their breathtaking views. As you climb, the road becomes narrower and rougher. At the top, you take a narrow path through woodland and small villages. In clear weather, you will enjoy a fantastic view of Ella, a charming village with plenty of small restaurants. This section of your Sri Lanka motorcycle round trip ends on the edge of the centre, right in the forest.
After breakfast you head south. At first, you ride through the mountains at a relaxed pace before smaller roads lead you back to the main road. Passing through Lunugamvehera National Park, where elephants can suddenly cross the road, you reach Yala National Park and ride along red sandy tracks and small dirt roads, the pure Sri Lanka off-road motorcycle experience. Your hotel is directly opposite the elephant orphanage, where you can watch the elephants being fed and bathed.
You leave the south coast and ride northwest back into the hills. Soon the tea plantations reappear and you regularly travel on unpaved roads, one last taste of real Sri Lanka motorcycle adventure. The final part of the day towards Negombo takes you along backroads, where traffic picks up again. In the evening you reach your hotel and look back together on the past stages.
Sadly, your Sri Lanka motorcycle tour comes to an end today. You will be taken to the airport by taxi. Depending on your flight time, you may arrive home the same day. In your luggage you will have unforgettable memories of temples, tea plantations, national parks and many kilometres of riding fun on two wheels through Sri Lanka.
