Kenya
This Kenya motorcycle trip to the Maasai Mara takes you in nine days from Nairobi over Mount Kenya and Lake Baringo into the savannah of the Maasai Mara. On light enduros you ride over tarmac, gravel and narrow tracks, meet the Maasai and round the Kenya motorcycle safari off with an optional safari.
Your Kenya motorcycle trip to the Maasai Mara begins in Europe: you board the plane and set off for East Africa. We are glad to help you book your flights so that the arrival fits smoothly with the start of your Kenya motorcycle safari in Nairobi.
Karibu, a warm welcome! You are collected from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, named after Kenya's first president. You feel the busy city life of Nairobi at once, with its traffic and its people in motion. The city has around five million inhabitants, lies at 1800 metres and was founded in 1899 with the arrival of the railway. At the start of your Kenya motorcycle trip the day's programme depends on whether you land in the morning or in the evening.
An early start to leave the city: you ride north, quickly leave the main roads and follow country roads through small towns. The route is made up of tarmac and some gravel. Roadworks and traffic jams fall behind you, and village life, nature and green hills take their place. Past the Aberdare National Park you reach Mount Kenya, whose highest peak measures 5199 metres. The mountain carries great cultural weight for the Kikuyu, Ameru, Embu and Maasai. On this stage of the Kenya motorcycle safari you stay in a simple guesthouse at the foot of the mountain.
Plenty of gravel today. You ride through grassland, past game farms and several conservancies with unique wildlife, so watch for zebras and cattle crossing the road. As the area is remote, you carry enough snacks and drinks and stop for a simple picnic along the way. The destination is Lake Baringo, a paradise for birdwatchers and home of the Njemps, the only pastoralist people who also fish. This off-road stage of the Kenya motorcycle trip brings you to a small trading town near the lake.
You slalom your way through western Kenya. On a mix of tarmac and gravel roads you pass villages and small towns. Some sections you ride without the support vehicle, and the mechanic then travels on the guide's motorcycle. You start the morning at around 1500 metres and sleep at 2500 metres, so pack your jumper. This stage of the Kenya motorcycle safari asks for concentration and rewards you with wide views.
Questions about the tour itinerary?
Our tour guide is happy to answer any questions about the day-by-day route, stops, and details.
Another adventurous day: you skirt the main road heading south and explore tracks used only by the Maasai and by wildlife. Again there is a stretch where you leave the support vehicle behind. The landscape turns to dry hills, human activity thins out and more animals appear along the way. At the end of this stage of the motorcycle safari to the Maasai Mara you stay in a fine camp near the national park.
No people live in a national park and there is hardly any fencing, which is enough for rich wildlife. The landscape of the Maasai Mara is magnificent. You leave the motorcycles at rest for part of the day and take an optional safari by vehicle, meeting large herds of buffalo, wildebeest, zebra and antelope; giraffes and lions cross your path. A motorcycle safari is possible on request. Bring enough batteries and memory cards. This safari in the Maasai Mara is the real thing. Please note: the safari can be booked on site as an option.
You set off early to cover ground again. In the morning there is plenty of game along the route. You follow a long gravel track until the tarmac carries you to Narok. Then you return to green highland and ride to Lake Naivasha. The lake and its surroundings are rich in nature; fertile soils make the region one of the best growing areas in Kenya, with many flower farms. On this stage of the Kenya motorcycle trip to the Maasai Mara you stay right by the lake.
Your last full day, but not the end: you start with an optional boat trip, enjoy the birdlife and visit the hippo pool. Then the engines fire up again. Over tarmac, spectacular tracks and unpaved roads you ride towards Nairobi, past the Mount Suswa Conservancy and through the Ngong Hills Natural Reserve. The closer Nairobi comes, the busier it gets. To close this Kenya motorcycle safari there is a well-earned drink on arrival and time for memories.
Depending on when your flight leaves, you either head to the airport early or have time to explore Nairobi: the Maasai market, Nairobi National Park, a large shopping centre or simply a rest at the hotel. Then it is time to say goodbye. The country and its people invite you to extend the trip to the Kenyan coast or to further adventures, from beach to mountaineering. After this Kenya motorcycle trip to the Maasai Mara we wish you a good journey home and hope to have you on board again soon.

On this tour we ride the Kibo K250.

On this trip through Kenya we do not ride at high altitude. The daily distances are not very long. There is enough time to stop along the way, take photos and visit villages.
This trip suits any healthy motorcyclist. We ride on paved main roads and regularly change the route to follow narrow side roads. About a third of the roads are unpaved, but these are well-graded gravel roads. The unpaved sections are not difficult, though off-road training is recommended. The bikes are light and agile enduros.
On this trip we stay in hotels, resorts and simple guesthouses.
The rainy season in Kenya runs from October to November and from March to May. The temperature is practically the same all year, between 25 and 30 degrees Celsius, depending on altitude of course. We chose to run the motorcycle tour in September: first for the dry weather, and second because the great animal migration takes place in the Serengeti at that time.
A helmet, a motorcycle jacket with protection, gloves, good sturdy (motorcycle) trousers with protection or separate knee guards and sturdy high (mountain) boots are mandatory. Beyond that it makes sense to bring good sunglasses, lip balm and sunscreen, as well as a helmet with a visor or good goggles that also protect against the dust on the unpaved roads.
You can buy your visa for Kenya on arrival at the airport, it costs USD 50. We strongly recommend applying online in advance. Your passport should be valid for at least 6 months beyond the date of entry into Kenya.
