MOTORCYCLE-TRIPS · AFRICA
The Europe Ghana motorcycle trip is the first section of the Trans Africa West and takes you in 21 days from the south of Europe to the Ghanaian capital Accra. Because the complete route is very long, we have divided it into two sections that you can also book individually.
The Journey
On this motorcycle trip to Ivory Coast, you start at the southernmost point of Spain in Algeciras and ride to Accra in Ghana. For the journey, you have two options: You can travel with your own motorcycle to Algeciras and save on the flight, or you can have your machine transported by us and come comfortably by plane. Together we cover around 5,555 kilometers and discover the route along the Ivory Coast to Ghana. For motorcycle and enduro expeditions, you are in good hands with the tour operator OVERCROSS: Since 2016, we have been accompanying motorcycle and off-road drivers on these tours.
Anyone who wants to continue from Ghana to South Africa can participate in the Go West trip, which leads to South Africa in 29 days.
After arriving in Algeciras, you will meet the group for the tour briefing - either with your own machine or after taking over the rental enduro. Afterwards, we will ride together to the ferry port and cross the Strait of Gibraltar to Ceuta. This officially begins your motorcycle journey Ivory Coast on African soil.
From Ceuta, we enter Morocco and head south. Marrakech is our logistical stop before we head into the diverse High Atlas. On this stage of your motorcycle trip through Morocco, busy cities and wide landscapes alternate as we prepare for the mountain pass crossing the next day.
Today is the highlight of the High Atlas: We will cross - weather permitting - the Tizi n'Test Pass at 2,093 meters above sea level. Narrow bends, rugged rock walls, and wide views characterize this motorcycle expedition through the mountains, before we roll back towards the plain and coast on the other side.
Through Agadir and Guelmim, we follow the road towards Antiatlas and Western Sahara. The landscape becomes more barren, the traffic less, and the straight stretches become longer. On this stage of the Europe-Ghana motorcycle trip, you will feel the vastness of Africa for the first time as we approach the desert section kilometer by kilometer.
The route leads us past Tan-Tan along the Atlantic deep into the Western Sahara. We spend New Year's Eve in a kasbah, a former fortress. On the way, we pass the museum of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, the author of "The Little Prince". This motorcycle expedition shows you the seemingly endless straights of the Sahara.
We reach El Aaiún, the largest city in Western Sahara with around 218,000 inhabitants. Along the coast, we pass a shipwreck from the time when the Canary Islands were still connected to the African continent by ferry. The view of the Atlantic accompanies you as the motorcycle tour Ivory Coast leads further south.
We enter Mauritania. Nouadhibou is our stop to take on materials and supplies. After that, we follow the Atlantic further south. This stage of the motorcycle trip in Mauritania is characterized by wind, sand, and the special atmosphere of one of Africa's most isolated coastlines.
Along the coast we reach Nouakchott, the capital of Mauritania. We stay overnight in a modest but special accommodation above the rooftops of the city. Afterwards, we set our sights on the endless sand dunes of the Mauritanian desert before the motorcycle expedition continues towards Senegal.
We cross the border into Senegal and arrive at the charming colonial city of St. Louis. We spend the night in the legendary Zebra Bar. On this leg of the motorcycle trip in Senegal, you encounter French colonial flair and the first impressions of the vibrant West African culture.
Through the Sahel zone, a transitional region between the dry savanna in the south and the Sahara in the north, we travel to Dakar. The vibrant capital of Senegal is our destination. This motorcycle trip in Senegal shows you the change from desert to greener, densely populated landscapes.
In Dakar, we take a break day to catch our breath. We visit, among other things, one of the largest mosques in West Africa and reflect on the motorcycle expedition so far. The day is for rest and preparation for the border crossing into Guinea.
Questions about the tour itinerary?
Our tour guide is happy to answer any questions about the day-by-day route, stops, and details.
From Dakar, we travel inland southeast to Tambacounda. The landscape becomes greener and hillier as we approach the border with Guinea. This stage of the Europe Ghana motorcycle trip is the last in Senegal before the terrain changes significantly.
We cross the border into Guinea. The crossing is typically difficult – due to road conditions and often insufficient fuel supply. However, as in previous years, we expect to overcome the challenges. This stage of the motorcycle trip in Guinea takes you through green, hilly mountainous terrain towards Labé.
Next, we go through the diverse terrain of Guinea. On the way to Kankan, we pass through dense vegetation and small, traditional villages where the authentic life of West Africa becomes palpable. The motorcycle expedition demands quite a lot from you and the enduro on poor paths, but rewards with original impressions.
From Kankan, we are approaching the border to Ivory Coast with the last liters of fuel in the tank. Sandy and rough tracks characterize this stage of the motorcycle journey through Guinea. Concentration and team spirit are required as we approach the next country and a new section of the journey.
Arriving in Ivory Coast, we continue on the motorcycle tour Ivory Coast towards Man. Winding roads meander through lush rainforests and dense vegetation. After the rough trails of Guinea, you enjoy the riding pleasure on better roads and the rich green landscape of the country.
The motorcycle trip through Ivory Coast leads us through tropical rainforests and winding roads over Gagnoa. The vegetation becomes denser, the climate wetter. On this stage, you will experience the green heart of the country before we turn back to the coast and the Atlantic.
We reach the coastal regions around Sassandra via sandy tracks and have an unobstructed view of the Atlantic Ocean again. Palms, beaches, and lagoons characterize this stage of the motorcycle expedition. Here you recharge for the last long days to Ghana.
We travel along the coast towards Aboisso heading east to the border to Ghana. This stage of the motorcycle trip Ivory Coast passes through small villages and plantation landscapes. We prepare for the final border crossing and the concluding marathon stage of the journey.
Now follows the marathon stage to Accra. It leads more or less from one construction site to the next and includes very long daily stages with driving times of up to 12 hours. This motorcycle trip in Ghana demands endurance from you – but in the end, the capital and the goal of your motorcycle expedition awaits.
In Accra, your motorcycle adventure ends in Ivory Coast. Please note: This is not a package tour, but an expedition – the description is intended only as a guideline and is not meant to be followed exactly. From Accra, you can continue your journey to South Africa over 29 days with the rental motorcycle from OVERCROSS on the motorcycle expedition Go West.
