Yes, you need a visa to travel to Bhutan. The visa must be applied for before arrival and is not available on entry. You can apply for the visa online through a licensed travel agency in Bhutan. Your travel agency will prepare the visa for you and issue an approval number that you will need upon entry.
Paro International Airport is the only international airport in Bhutan and offers stunning views of the Himalayas. Flights are limited, so book in advance. Many international flights land in India or Nepal, from where you can fly to Paro. Note that landings here are challenging due to the mountainous environment and are often weather-dependent.
The local currency is the Ngultrum (Nu), which is pegged to the Indian Rupee. Although ATMs can be found in larger towns, cash and credit cards are often not accepted in rural areas. It is advisable to exchange enough cash before your trip and also carry some cash for small purchases, especially for street vendors and local markets.
No vaccinations are required for entry into Bhutan, however, diseases such as Hepatitis A and Typhoid are recommended. A travel insurance with comprehensive coverage is highly advisable to cover unexpected medical costs and trip cancellation costs. Since infrastructure in Bhutan is limited, this helps to minimize safety risks.
To drive in Bhutan, you will need an international driving permit along with your national driving license. It is important to inquire about all necessary permits before your trip and to ensure that you have good knowledge of driving on mountainous roads as road conditions can often be challenging. Note that traffic drives on the left side in Bhutan.
To stay mobile in Bhutan, you can purchase a SIM card at Paro Airport or in the towns. Providers Bhutan Telecom and DrukNet offer tourist packages. Make sure to bring your passport as it is required for the purchase. Internet may be available in the towns, but is often limited in rural areas, so plan ahead.
