Yes, you need a visa to travel to Bhutan. The visa must be applied for before arrival and is not available upon entry. You can apply for the visa online through a licensed travel agency in Bhutan. Your travel agency will prepare the visa for you and issue an approval number that you will need upon entry.
Paro International Airport is the only international airport in Bhutan and offers stunning views of the Himalayas. Flights are limited, so book in advance. Many international flights land in India or Nepal, from where you can fly to Paro. Note that landings here are challenging due to the mountainous surroundings and are often weather-dependent.
The local currency is the Ngultrum (Nu), which is pegged to the Indian Rupee. Although you can find ATMs in larger cities, cash and credit cards are often not accepted in rural areas. It is advisable to exchange enough cash before a trip and also to have some cash on hand for small purchases, especially for street vendors and local markets.
No vaccinations are required for entry into Bhutan; however, illnesses such as hepatitis A and typhoid are recommended.
