Bhutan Travel and Vacation – Good to know
A visa is required for all travelers to enter Bhutan. It cannot be applied for on-site. Instead, you must apply for your visa online through a licensed tour operator, and it will be approved before your trip. The approval will be sent to you via email and must be presented upon entry.
The Paro International Airport is the only international airport in Bhutan. It is located in a picturesque mountain landscape and offers stunning views. Most international flights come here. Make sure your flight has an appropriate arrival time to ensure smooth visa handling.
The local currency is the Ngultrum (BTN), and there is no way to purchase it abroad. Credit cards are accepted in many larger cities, but cash is essential for rural areas. Use ATMs in Thimphu or Paro to withdraw Ngultrum. Plan enough cash for smaller purchases and local experiences.
Vaccinations are recommended, but not necessarily required. It is recommended to refresh common vaccinations, such as tetanus, hepatitis A/B, and typhoid. A travel insurance is essential to cover unexpected medical costs or trip cancellations. Make sure your insurance is also valid in Bhutan.
To drive in Bhutan, you need an international driver's license, as not all local authorities recognize national driver's licenses. Rent a car only with a driver, as road conditions can be challenging. Drive carefully and pay attention to local traffic rules when traveling to the many breathtaking sights.
SIM cards are easy to acquire in Bhutan. Upon your arrival, you can purchase SIM cards in larger stores and at the airport. Keep your passport photo for registration. The mobile providers offer various prepaid plans that are suitable for tourists. Make sure your phone is unlocked to be able to use the card.
