To enter Laos, most travelers need a visa. This can be applied for either in advance online or upon arrival at most international airports. For the visa-on-arrival, you will need a recent passport photo and a fee in cash. For specific visa requirements, you should consult the website of the Lao embassy. Be sure to pay attention to the validity period of the visa.
The Vientiane Wattay International Airport is the best airport to land in Laos, followed by the Luang Prabang International Airport. Both airports provide good access to the country's major attractions. Note that during the low season, sometimes fewer flights are available, so plan ahead.
The official currency in Laos is the Laotian Kip (LAK). While credit cards are accepted in large cities, you should definitely carry cash for smaller purchases. ATMs are available in major tourist areas but not always in rural regions. Check the current exchange rates and plan for sufficient cash.
Before traveling to Laos, vaccinations against hepatitis A, typhoid, and Japanese encephalitis are recommended.
