To enter Laos, most travelers require a visa. This can either be applied for online in advance or upon arrival at most international airports. For Visa-on-Arrival, you need a recent passport photo and a fee in cash. For specific visa requirements, you should consult the website of the Laotian embassy. Be sure to pay attention to the validity period of the visa.
The Vientiane Wattay International Airport is the best airport to land in Laos, followed by Luang Prabang International Airport. Both airports provide good access to the main attractions in the country. Note that in the low season, there may be fewer flights available, so plan ahead.
The official currency in Laos is the Laotian Kip (LAK). While credit cards are accepted in larger cities, you should definitely carry cash for smaller purchases. ATMs are available in main tourist areas, but not always in rural regions. Check current exchange rates and plan to have enough cash on hand.
Before traveling to Laos, vaccinations against Hepatitis A, Typhoid, and Japanese Encephalitis are recommended. A travel insurance is not legally required, but it is strongly advised to cover medical costs and potential repatriation. Also, check whether your insurance covers international travel, especially in #emergencies.
To drive in Laos, you need an international driving permit along with your national driving license. Road conditions can vary, and often the roads in rural areas are poor. Driving in the city is chaotic, expect different traffic rules and be cautious. Buses and tuk-tuks are good alternatives for travel.
