Peru Travel and Vacation – Good to know

German citizens do not need a visa for a stay of up to 183 days. The entry stamp is issued at the airport. If you wish to stay longer, you should apply for your visa in advance at the Peruvian embassy. Make sure that your passport is valid for at least six months.
The Jorge Chávez Airport in Lima is the best starting point for your trip to Peru. From here, you have access to many domestic flights. Plan ahead to secure cheap flights, and check the domestic connections to begin off-road adventures in remote regions.
The local currency in Peru is the Peruvian Sol (PEN). Credit cards are accepted in larger cities, but in rural areas it is advisable to carry cash. ATMs are common, but check the fees beforehand. It is worthwhile to always have small bills for simple purchases.
Make sure that your travel insurance possibly covers medical care in Peru. Vaccinations, such as for Hepatitis A and Tetanus, are recommended. A first aid kit for off-road tours is useful, as not all remote places can provide medical assistance.
To drive in Peru, you need an international driver's license. You can purchase SIM cards from providers like Movistar or Claro directly at the airport or in cities. Don't forget to have your receipt ready for activation. This way, you can stay connected even in remote areas.
