Mongolia Travel and Vacation – Good to know

Travelers from many countries do not need a visa for stays of up to 30 days in Mongolia. For longer stays or specific nationalities, a visa may be required. It is important to check the requirements before departure. A visa can be applied for at embassies or online, but not upon arrival. Make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months.
The international airport Ulaanbaatar (Chinggis Khaan International Airport) is the main airport in Mongolia. It connects the country to many international destinations. Access to the city is via taxi and shuttle services. From here, you can conveniently plan your further travels within the country. Note that flights to remote areas are often limited.
The local currency is the tögrög (MNT). Credit cards are only accepted in larger cities and hotels, so it is advisable to carry cash. ATMs are available in Ulaanbaatar, but rare in rural areas. It makes sense to exchange cash on-site. Visit exchange offices to get better rates than at airports.
There are no mandatory vaccinations for entry into Mongolia, but it is recommended to refresh standard vaccinations such as tetanus and hepatitis A. A travel insurance is also highly advisable to cover unforeseen events. Check if the insurance coverage also applies to expeditions and nature trips, as these are often popular in Mongolia.
SIM cards are readily available in Mongolia. Visit mobile phone stores or kiosks at the airport and in Ulaanbaatar. Providers such as Unitel or MobiCom offer prepaid cards that include affordable data packages. Bring your passport for identification. Network coverage may vary in rural areas, so plan ahead.
