Germany

Day 1

Tübingen - Start of the expedition

In Tübingen, the Africa motorcycle expedition begins. We load the equipment, check the travel enduros, and set off towards the south. The first day takes us through the European winter, while the long west route to Cape Town lies ahead of us.

France

Days 2–3

France - Through the Rhône Valley to the South

On the Transafrika Expedition, we roll through France towards the Mediterranean. The Rhône Valley takes us swiftly south, past Lyon and Provence. Highway kilometers and cold stages are still part of this first journey before Spain awaits.

Pyrenees - Border to Spain

Today we cross the Pyrenees and reach Spain. Although this motorcycle tour of Africa begins in Europe, with each pass the climate becomes milder. We follow the coast southward and enjoy the first warmer kilometers of the long journey.

Spain

Days 4–5

Andalusia - Drive to Algeciras

The motorcycle trip West Africa leads through Spain to Andalusia. We pass through the vast plains of the Meseta and reach Algeciras at the transition between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. Here we prepare motorcycles and papers for the ferry crossing to Africa.

Gibraltar - Ferry to Morocco

From Algeciras, we take the ferry across the Strait of Gibraltar. For many, the actual Africa crossing on a motorcycle begins here: Within a few hours, continent, language, and culture change. In Morocco, we roll ashore and set our watches to adventure.

Morocco

Days 6–9

Marrakech - Arrival in Morocco

The Africa Motorcycle Expedition reaches Marrakech. Among souks, alleys, and the Djemaa el Fna, we gather supplies and let latecomers join the group by plane. In the evening, we plan the stage over the High Atlas towards the south.

High Atlas - Trails over the Tizi n'Tichka

Above the Tizi n'Tichka, the motorcycle expedition Africa climbs in the High Atlas. Serpentines, rubble, and the first gravel paths demand concentration. On the other side, the landscape opens up to barren valleys and mud villages on the edge of the desert.

TEST

Ouarzazate - Towards the Desert South

From Ouarzazate, we follow tracks and side roads deeper into the south of Morocco. This motorcycle tour in Africa costs energy: sand, heat, and corrugated roads alternate. In the evenings, we set up the first real desert camp under a clear starry sky.

Endurotour Marokko, 4x4 Begleitfahrzeug

Southern Morocco - Border to Western Sahara

Along the Atlantic coast, the Enduro trip Africa approaches the Western Sahara. Traffic becomes scarcer, the vastness greater. We fill up the tank, replenish water, and prepare for long stretches without supply in the disputed desert region.

Western Sahara

Days 10–12

Western Sahara - Endless Coastal Track

The motorcycle trip West Africa dives into the Western Sahara. For kilometers, only the Atlantic is on our left and the desert on our right. Headwinds and sand challenge both rider and machine. We pass control posts with patience and the prepared papers.

Dakhla - Stopover at the Atlantic

On a narrow peninsula, we reach Dakhla. Here, the TransAfrica expedition takes a service day: tensioning chains, checking tires, gathering strength. Kitesurfers take advantage of the wind while we discuss the upcoming border stage to Mauritania.

Borderland - To the Mauritanian Border

The last section of Western Sahara brings us to the notorious borderland. Between the posts lies a mine-strewn no man's land track. This Africa motorcycle expedition requires full attention here before we reach Mauritanian soil.

Mauritania

Days 13–15

Nouadhibou - Arrival in Mauritania

In Nouadhibou, the Mauritanian part of the motorcycle expedition West Africa begins. We take care of visa formalities and dive into another world of sand and vastness. On the outskirts of the city, the famous ship graveyard rusts away in the Atlantic.

Sahara - Dunes and Corrugated Iron Tracks

Deep in the Sahara, the Africa crossing motorcycle demands everything. Soft sand, dune fields, and corrugated iron force constant line choice. Those who fall are lifted up by the group. In the evening, every sip of water counts in the lonely desert camp.

Nouakchott - Capital at the edge of the desert

The Enduro journey Africa reaches Nouakchott, where desert meets sea. We replenish supplies, take care of the next visas, and let the machines take a short breather. In the evening, the pirogues arrive at the fish market with the catch of the day.

Senegal

Days 16–18

Saint-Louis - Border to Senegal

We cross the border to Senegal. The motorcycle trip through West Africa leads to Saint-Louis, a charming colonial city at the mouth of the Senegal River. After that, we go through the Sahel region, the transition between the Sahara and dry savanna, to the sea.

Atlantic Coast - Camp by the Ocean

Today the TransAfrica Expedition is camping directly by the Atlantic. A legendary kitchen is treating us to a dinner that is one of the highlights of the trip. The coffee the next morning is considered the best on the entire West African coast.

Dakar - Visa and Logistics

In Dakar, the Africa Motorcycle Expedition organizes a large part of the further visas. There is time for service on the enduros between authorities and embassies. The vibrant capital at the westernmost point of Africa is an important hub of the route.

Gambia

Day 19

Gambia - Ferry across the river

A short detour takes the motorcycle tour Africa to Gambia, the smallest country on the continent. We cross the wide Gambia River by ferry. Tropical greenery and mangroves replace the desert, and the air becomes noticeably more humid and warmer.

Guinea

Days 20–22

Guinea - Green Hills and Trails

The motorcycle expedition Africa reaches Guinea. Red laterite tracks wind through green hills and villages. After the desert stages, the change is enormous: mud replaces sand, and sudden downpours turn paths into slippery challenges.

Fouta Djallon - Highlands of Guinea

In the mountains of Fouta Djallon, the Enduro journey Africa climbs over winding trails. Waterfalls, steep steps, and deep valleys shape the landscape. The altitude brings cooler nights, but the technical ground challenges both rider and suspension equally.

South Guinea - On the way to the border

Through lonely tracks, the Africa crossing motorcycle approaches the border to the Ivory Coast. Markets by the roadside provide us with fruit and water. Communication takes place with hands and feet, and each border crossing requires patience and paperwork.

Ivory Coast

Days 23–25

Ivory Coast - Arrival and Palms

The motorcycle trip through West Africa reaches the Ivory Coast. Palm avenues, cocoa plantations, and bustling cities shape the journey. The roads get better, the pace picks up. In the evenings, we enjoy the humid warm atmosphere of the tropics by the Gulf of Guinea.

Yamoussoukro - Through the inland

Passing by Yamoussoukro, the Trans Africa Expedition rolls through the interior of the country. The enormous basilica unexpectedly appears among the palm trees. We use the paved section to make up kilometers and to spare the machines for upcoming tracks.

Abidjan - Metropolis on the Gulf

In Abidjan, the Africa Motorcycle Expedition pauses in a real million metropolis. Skyscrapers, lagoons, and traffic are a contrast to the desert. We are waiting for final maintenance, adding equipment, and coordinating the route towards Ghana.

Ghana

Days 26–28

Ghana - Border and Coastal Road

After crossing the border, the motorcycle tour Africa follows the Ghanaian coastal road. Old slave forts like Cape Coast remind us of a dark history. The people are warm, the English makes daily life easier, and street food takes care of us on the way.

Kumasi - In the Heart of Ashanti Land

The motorcycle expedition West Africa reaches Kumasi, the center of the Ashanti Empire. At the huge market, there is everything from spare parts to fabrics. We use the day for service and immerse ourselves in the vibrant culture of the interior.

Accra - Stage destination of the first half

In Accra, the first major phase of this Africa motorcycle expedition ends. For some short-term travelers, Ghana is the destination, while others prepare for the second stage. We thoroughly check machines and papers before continuing towards the equator.

Togo

Day 29

Lomé - Short ride through Togo

We cross Togo in almost a day. The Enduro trip Africa follows the coast to Lomé, where palm trees and Atlantic waves line the capital. The Voodoo belief of the region is displayed at the bustling fetish market, before the next border awaits.

Benin

Day 30

Cotonou - Through Benin to the border

In Benin, the motorcycle journey West Africa rolls through Cotonou, the bustling economic center. Mopeds swarm by the thousands through the streets. We fill up, buy water, and prepare for Nigeria, the perhaps most demanding stage of the entire trip.

Nigeria

Days 31–33

Lagos - Gateway to Hell

We cross the border into Nigeria and reach Lagos, the largest city in the country. This African motorcycle crossing requires vigilance here, as Lagos is considered 'the gateway to hell'. In a well-secured hotel, our contact person receives us.

Nigeria - Through the dense interior of the country

The motorcycle expedition Africa makes its way through Nigeria's dense interior. Traffic, checkpoints, and heat test our nerves. We keep the group closely together and follow the previously discussed route to quickly head towards the Cameroonian border.

East Nigeria - Approach to Cameroon

On the way to the border, the land becomes greener and hillier. The Trans-Africa Expedition passes through small towns and market spots. The roads deteriorate, and we prepare for one of the most inconspicuous border crossings of the entire route.

Cameroon

Days 34–36

Border - The Outpost in Nowhere

At the border post 'Out of Nowhere' we leave Nigeria. After about 20 kilometers, the Africa Motorcycle Expedition reaches a village hut in Cameroon, recognizable only by a flag. Without an entry stamp, we continue on and look for a place to stay for the night.

Cameroon - Rainforest and Mud Tracks

The rainforest welcomes the Enduro trip Africa with humidity and deep mud. Slippery trails, fallen trees, and river crossings make every kilometer a challenge. Wet gear is now a part of everyday life, but the group pushes through.

Yaoundé - capital in the hilly region

After tough stages, the motorcycle tour reaches Africa Yaoundé, the capital of Cameroon located on seven hills. We dry our gear, service the machines, and recharge. Before us lies the Congo, the green heart and the halfway point of the expedition.

Republic of Congo

Days 37–39

Congo - Border to the Republic of Congo

The motorcycle expedition West Africa crosses the border to the Republic of Congo. First, it goes over surprisingly well-developed roads before the dense jungle swallows the view. Humid heat and constant change between asphalt and dirt track shape the day.

Rainforest - Gorilla Camp in the Jungle

On good roads, the Africa motorcycle expedition reaches a camp in the rainforest. From here, we set off on a gorilla tour, a rare experience, as only a few silverbacks still live in this region. Their population is highly endangered.

Brazzaville - On the banks of the Congo

In Brazzaville, the Transafrica Expedition reaches the mighty Congo River. On the other side lies Kinshasa. We obtain the DRC visa, often within an hour, and prepare for the crossing into one of the most challenging regions of the journey.

Democratic Republic of the Congo

Days 40–42

Kinshasa - Ferry to the DR Congo

The ferry transports the Africa crossing motorcycle over the Congo to Kinshasa. The megacity is considered one of the most chaotic in Africa. Formalities, crowds, and traffic demand patience. Even the satellite connection is not always reliable here.

DR Congo - Trails through the South

South of Kinshasa, the motorcycle expedition Africa struggles over rough tracks. Bridges are dilapidated, fuel is scarce, and the distances between the villages are large. We travel autonomously, share fuel and water, and keep the group closely together.

Borderland - Towards Angola

The last section of the DR Congo brings the Enduro journey Africa to the border with Angola. The landscape slowly opens up, savanna replaces the dense forest. After the tough jungle days, everyone looks forward to drier tracks and firmer ground.

Angola

Days 43–46

Angola - Border and Vastness

The motorcycle journey through West Africa reaches Angola. After years of war, the country is on the move, and the roads are surprisingly good in sections. Wide savannas and baobab trees shape the horizon as we swiftly make our way south.

Luanda - Coastal metropolis on the Atlantic

On the coast, the Africa Motorcycle Expedition reaches Luanda, the expensive and bustling capital of Angola. Skyscrapers stand next to markets, the Atlantic sparkles behind it. We stock up, exchange money, and plan the long stages through the south of the country.

Angola - Long stages to the south

For hundreds of kilometers, the motorcycle tour Africa stretches through southern Angola. Gas stations become rare, which is why we fill up spare canisters. The landscape becomes more barren and already foreshadows the Namibian desert. In the evening, we camp far away from any settlement.

Lubango - Before the border to Namibia

In Lubango, the Transafrica Expedition winds its way over the Serra da Leba with its famous hairpin turns. Afterwards, it descends into drier land. We are approaching the Namibian border and preparing documents and machines for the penultimate border crossing.

Namibia

Days 47–50

Namibia - Border and first desert

The Africa Crossing motorcycle reaches Namibia. Immediately everything becomes wider and emptier: straight gravel roads, endless sky, and hardly any traffic. After the chaos of the tropics, the country feels like a liberation. We enjoy the clear, dry desert air.

Etosha - Wilderness and Wildlife

On the edge of the Etosha area, the Africa Motorcycle Expedition experiences Namibia's wildlife. Elephants, zebras, and antelopes cross the tracks. We keep our distance and respect, because we are only guests here. In the evenings, the salt pan glows in warm light.

Sossusvlei - Dunes and Granite

Passing the red dunes of Sossusvlei, the Enduro trip Africa rolls through the Namib. Huge granite formations and Keetmanshoop line the way. The contrast of red sand and blue sky is one of the most impressive sections of the trip.

Orange - To the border with South Africa

The motorcycle trip to Cape Town approaches the Orange River, the border to South Africa. Vineyards and farms appear in the barren landscape. At the border post, we leave Namibia behind and know: The goal of the long expedition is within reach.
