Foreword to the South Equator Motorcycle Trip

Thanks to the sponsors TOURATECH and YAMAHA, we can enable this one-way tour from the equator to the approximately 5000 kilometers distant South Atlantic for a handful of adventurers. The start of the equator tour is "south of the equator line" in Nairobi, before heading directly to Tanzania. Further, we cross Malawi and Zambia; southern Africa is one of the 1001 highlights between madness and adventure of the Transafrica motorcycle expedition, with Botswana and the Okavango basin as well as Namibia with Walvis Bay. This "exploration trip" will be conducted as an EXPEDITION, with clearly defined uncertainties and challenges of the various climate zones, borders, regulations, and conflicts of the people! A considerable degree of travel & enduro experience as well as mental stability are prerequisites for participating in this Africa expedition. "It is and remains the greatest adventure and the most eventful motorcycle journey! 40 YEARS Ténéré Experience The equator tour is the second part of the Transafrica expedition.

Nairobi: Start of the Equator 'Go South!' Enduro trip

The motorcycle fleet YAMAHA Ténéré Rally is ready to depart, preparations for the next 5000 kilometers are being made at the camp before it's time to say: 'Gooo south' and drive left! The YAMAHA Ténéré Enduro Cross travels along the great (6000 kilometers long) African Rift Valley through a country with more than 50 different languages and dialects. The route runs along the famous Kenyan savannas on the edge of the 'heart chamber' of Africa with the typical clichéd postcard image of the low-hanging sun behind the acacias in the savanna. Kenya is one of the typical cheerful African countries with about 40 different ethnic groups and a diverse wildlife, such as the big five and large herds of wildebeests, Thomson's gazelles, zebras, and antelopes that migrate from the Serengeti over 500 kilometers north into the Masai Mara and back south in spring. A real spectacle is the crossing of the Mara River, where crocodiles are already waiting for the big feast.

Motorcycle Adventure Tanzania

We cross the border post from Kenya to Tanzania and see the legendary Kilimanjaro from afar, which was still snow-covered a few years ago with the 5985 meter high summit of Kibo. At the foot of Kilimanjaro, we reach Arusha and can take time for a day in the city OR a safari in the Ngorongoro Crater, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has about 25000 large mammals (elephants) and the highest density of predators (lions, spotted hyenas, leopards). Breakfast with freshly brewed coffee straight from the plantation – if not now, when then? We will need the push-up effect of the coffee for the ride on the enduros along the Kizigo Game Reserve and the Usungu Game Reserve, as it will be a long day on the enduro.

On and off the Road through Malawi

The Enduro travel group has now become a well-coordinated 'border team' and our border passers are always informed in advance by our online tour guide Jojo that we are coming. Via satellite monitoring, the online tour guide from OVERCROSS is always informed about our location and can virtually travel ahead of us and take on some important tasks of a guide. There are still infinitely hard-sounding African kilometers on laterite-like tracks with challenging sections past extinct volcanoes ahead of us. The tracks through Malawi go through tea plantations, mango 'forests', and banana plantations as far as the eye can see. The sun is low over Lake Malawi, where we set up our camp and sip down the long hard enduro day with a cold beer, take a plunge into the lake, and enjoy delicious crocodile while gazing at the fellow inhabitants by the lake.

Enduro Expedition at Lake Malawi

With the first rays of sunlight over Lake Malawi, we get on the motorcycles and travel along Lake Malawi towards Zambia. Between warm rain showers and sunshine, we will experience unexpected adventures over the coming days just like in the previous expedition days. The last stage has some surprises in terms of riding techniques in store! Our Enduro trips are known for a 'battle day' and this last stretch by Lake Malawi could become the 'surprise stage' on the Equator motorcycle expedition! Passing Nkothaka Wildlife Reserve, we reach a small border post between Malawi and Zambia.

Enduro Adventure through Young Zambia

The fertile land (at least for women with 5 children on average) ranks 141 out of 187 in the Human Development Index. Young Zambia has been independent since 1964! With around 800,000 AIDS orphans, Zambia is one of the countries with the highest HIV infection rates in the world! English is spoken as the official language, which is very helpful for us given the various ethnicities and languages like Nsenga, Tumbuka, Ngoni, or Bisa. Along the Lower Zambesi National Park, we create our own trail on the enduros along Lake Karibu. Depending on fitness and the timetable, we will have two sporty enduro travel days ahead of us until we arrive in Livingston at the Victoria Falls and probably take a rest day to enjoy the falls or take a helicopter flight over the Kololo (what the Mosi oa Tunya, meaning 'the smoke that thunders', is called) to the Victoria Falls. The sunrise sparkles in the thundering spray of the Victoria Falls, a last look at the 'spiritual child of Cecil Rhodes who completed the masterpiece Victoria Falls Bridge in 1905 after just 14 months.

Across the Zambezi River to Botswana

Motorcycle / enduro travel is quite unusual in Zambia, so the border posts look rather surprised when the 'motorcycle riders wrapped like mummies' appear at 20 to 25 degrees in front of the 'customs booths' in Kazungula. Kazungula is the only border crossing in the quadripoint of Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and the adjacent Caprivi Strip of Namibia, hence it is quite busy and somewhat lengthy in processing. We cross the border river Zambezi and reach the last inland country on the expedition through the African continent. Botswana has only about four inhabitants per square kilometer, but has around 130,000 elephants, the largest elephant population in Africa, which means we will probably have more elephants than people in front of and beside us on the tracks through Botswana. With a little luck and courage, we might swim through the river with the elephants in Chobe... As said, with a little COURAGE!

Namibia the Land of the San

Welcome to the last country of the TransAfrica motorcycle journey, welcome to Namibia the land of the San. About 10,000 kilometers ago we reached the northern hunting grounds of the SAN in Ethiopia, now we are in the 'heart' of the African indigenous people, in the heart of the country with the endless horizon, Namibia. Namibia is, after Mongolia, the country with the lowest population density in the world, with about 2.5 people per square kilometer compared to 231 people per square kilometer in Germany. On our last kilometers through Africa, we traverse the areas of Omaheke, Khomas, and Erongo, with a little luck we may stay overnight at the kraal of a San village. The expedition participants will enjoy one last time the 1,000,000 star outdoor hotel near the Namib Naukluft Park.
