MOTORCYCLE-TOURS · MADAGASCAR
Madagascar enduro tour riding takes you across one of the world's most remote island destinations on a Honda XR250 rental bike.
The Journey
This madagascar enduro tour uses a Honda XR250 enduro rental for 20 days across the island's most remote terrain. The route starts in Antananarivo and runs south to Morondava, through the Baobab Avenue and into Tsingy via 100 km of unpaved tracks. The southern Manja-to-Toliara stage is the hardest stretch and depends on seasonal conditions. A motorcycle tour africa at this level requires planning: madagascar motorcycle rental, support vehicle, local mechanic and English-speaking guide are all included. Group size is capped at 10 riders minimum 6 required to run.
Madagascar
A 20-day madagascar enduro tour across the island's most varied terrain — mountain highlands, remote lowlands, national parks and the rugged west coast.
This madagascar enduro tour begins in Antananarivo, the island's mountain capital. The group is picked up from the airport and transferred to a hotel in the city center. The streets of Antanarivo run at steep angles, often connected by stairways, and the Independence Square area is within walking distance. Since flights arrive early in the morning, there is time to explore the city on foot before the riding begins tomorrow.
First day on the madagascar motorcycle tour. The group rides through the busy, narrow streets of Antananarivo before heading out to Royal Hill, roughly 20 km from the city. The hilltop temples were built by the island's first Southeast Asian settlers and still hold cultural significance for many Malagasy people — the site is listed by UNESCO. On the return, the group stops at a lemur rescue center where a park guide explains the different species on site.
The guided motorcycle tour madagascar route heads west at dawn on paved road. After an hour, the group passes through Lemur Park — a rescue center with several species roaming freely, available as an optional stop if the previous day's visit was missed. The route continues to Chute de Lily, one of the largest waterfalls on the island, before turning south to spend the night in the small lakeside village of Ampefy.
After 50 km on paved road, the first off-road section of this madagascar bike tour begins — roughly 80 km of unpaved track through hilly rice field country. The terrain is green in the wet season and dry brown in the long dry months. After the dirt section, 40 km of tarmac lead into Antsirabe, a colonial-era city known for its colorful Pousse Pousse rickshaws and well-preserved historic buildings.
A four-hour motorcycle tour africa-style descent from the highlands. The route follows paved road west for 200 km into the gently falling lowlands toward Miandrivazo. On arrival, the group parks the bikes, has lunch and then boards a dugout canoe for a river trip through the valley. The evening is spent back in Miandrivazo finding a good spot for dinner.
The descent continues south for 120 km before a coffee break or early lunch in Malaimbandy. Malagasy food draws on both Asian and French culinary traditions — fresh fish and zebu beef are common on menus in small towns. After the break, the paved main road leads to the coast and Morondava, a relaxed port town with a small beach. These first four riding days have been mostly on tarmac — that changes from here.
An early start for the longest day of this enduro rental madagascar route. The group rides through the famous Baobab Avenue and into the Kirindy private reserve before hitting 90 km of unpaved, often dusty track to reach Belo sur Tsiribihina, one of the country's largest rivers — crossed by ferry. After lunch, another 100 km of gravel road leads to the entrance of Tsingy National Park, where the group stays overnight.
A full day inside Tsingy National Park — the standout section of any madagascar tsingy motorcycle itinerary. The park is a dense formation of razor-sharp limestone peaks connected by suspension bridges at varying heights. The walking trail requires some agility and is not recommended for those with a fear of heights. If time allows, a second northern circuit can be added. The night is spent again in Bekopaka.
The group retraces the same unpaved track back west, with lunch in Belo Tsiribihina and a ferry crossing back over the river. The highlight of the return is arriving at Baobab Avenue at sunset — the orange light on the dust and the silhouettes of dozens of baobab trees make this a natural photography stop. The late light means a late arrival at the hotel in Morondava.
A scheduled rest day in Morondava while the mechanic carries out routine maintenance on all bikes — a standard part of any madagascar offroad motorcycle tour of this length. Riders can spend the day at the beach, try the local restaurants and bars, or return to Baobab Avenue for another sunset visit with more time to explore on foot.
Questions about the tour itinerary?
Our tour guide is happy to answer any questions about the day-by-day route, stops, and details.
The two hardest days of the entire madagascar adventure riding itinerary. The route leaves the main roads completely and follows tiny tracks south along the coast before turning inland along a river. Manja, roughly 150 km from Morondava, is the midpoint overnight. The second day crosses the Mangoky River by ferry and continues 180 km to the coast at Toliara. Difficulty depends on conditions: loose sand in the dry season, soft clay when wet. The hotel in Toliara's port area has hot showers and a good restaurant — a welcome stop after two long days.
In July and August, this rest day in Toliara is used for a boat trip south of town to look for humpback whales on their migration route. There is no guarantee of a sighting, but the coast is active during these months. On departures outside whale season, the group visits the Sarodrane caves or a botanical arboretum south of town. This is the one day of the african enduro tour where the bikes stay parked.
The group follows Route Nationale 7 inland, a well-maintained highway that winds up into the mountains. The route includes a proper mountain pass at 1,056 meters. Around midday, the group stops in Ilakaka — a sapphire mining town — for lunch and a visit to the mines and a gem-cutting workshop. Another hour of riding brings the group to Ranohira for the night.
Isalo National Park occupies a full day on this enduro africa loop. The park's landscape of sandstone gorges, natural pools and waterfalls resembles a miniature Grand Canyon. A local guide leads the group through the park all day, with a barbecue lunch served in the middle of the wilderness. Ring-tailed lemurs and red-fronted lemurs move through the scrub around the picnic site.
The madagascar motorcycle rental bike continues north on Route 7 to Ambalavao. After checking into a hotel near Anja Park, a short afternoon excursion reaches a large colony of ring-tailed lemurs — one of the most accessible lemur populations on the island. The site is a community-managed reserve and one of the easier wildlife stops on the tour.
Today's ride heads into the high central plateau, with stops in small villages and time to photograph the highland scenery. Lunch is near Fianarantsoa, then the route turns east and drops toward the rainforest zone, with a stop at the Namorona Waterfalls. The night is spent in the small village of Ranomafana at the edge of the national park.
The morning is spent inside Ranomafana National Park, a dense rainforest reserve known for rare lemur species including the golden bamboo lemur. After the visit, the group takes a different route out — unpaved — before rejoining Route 7 north. Lunch is in Ambositra, then 90 km of highland road with good views leads back to Antsirabe for the night.
The final riding day of this madagascar enduro tour is a winding mountain road back to the capital. Traffic builds up as the group approaches Antananarivo. Bikes are returned at the hotel, and the afternoon is free for a final walk through the city and last shopping. The group finishes with dinner at a restaurant before a late-night van transfer to the airport for the return flight.
The madagascar motorcycle tour ends today. Depending on your return flight time, there may be a few hours remaining in the city before the transfer to Antananarivo airport. In cases where afternoon flights depart early, the Day 19 schedule is adjusted to ensure enough time to pack and reach the airport comfortably.
