MOTORCYCLE-TOURS · AFRICA
Time is precious. Real adventures are rare — and that makes them even more valuable.Under the motto “Friends for Friends,” we created the Friendship Tour. This 14-day motorcycle journey takes you through South Africa, Botswana, and Zimbabwe.
The Journey
This tour lets you bring your partner or family along on a motorcycle trip. Each day, you can ride with the group or go solo on the daily stage.
On long-distance stages, your passenger can travel in the support truck. The next day, they can hop back on the bike and feel the African wind. No need to carry luggage on the motorcycle — we transport it for you.
Book camping or lodge stays based on your style. In the evenings, we gather around the campfire. Or we enjoy a sundowner and watch the sun set over Africa.
Our motorcycle adventure starts in Johannesburg. This is the first of three marathon stages. We ride from early morning until sunset on paved roads through the breadbasket of South Africa toward Botswana.
At the Martins Drift border, we spend the night in a cozy African camp or lodge. Get ready for the adventures ahead.
Today’s highlight is the vast Kalahari savanna. It is one of the largest arid regions in the world. The Kalahari is a huge inland basin formed over millions of years by sand and sediment deposits. These sandy layers, often up to 200 meters deep, create a gentle, rolling landscape. Dry fossil riverbeds called Omuramba mark the region.
You can choose the paved route or ride unpaved tracks through the savanna — a dream for any enduro rider. Either way, the scenery is stunning.
The big moment today: we see African white and black rhinos up close at Khama Rhino Sanctuary. Get ready for more safari thrills ahead on this tour.
A long day of riding through central Botswana. The route mixes asphalt with optional washboard tracks and loose sand for off-road fans.
We all meet in Maun, the gateway to the Okavango Delta. The Overland Truck team welcomes us with true safari vibes. This is where the real Africa adventure begins.
We venture into the Okavango Delta. It spans over 15,000 square kilometers and is the largest inland delta in the world. The Okavango River seeps into the Kalahari and creates channels, lagoons, and islands.
Elephants, lions, hippos, and many bird species live here. Explore the wilderness on sandy paths or by mokoro (traditional dugout canoe). Spend the night under the African sky.
Motorcycles cannot enter the delta. But you can join a trip to Chief’s Island, the heart of the Okavango. This island sits inside the Moremi Game Reserve. It was once the private hunting ground of the Batawana chief. Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, famous for its wildlife density.
Back on paved roads, we ride toward Nata. Here lie the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans — about 12,000 square kilometers of dried white plains. These are remnants of a prehistoric lake. In the rainy season, flamingos and water birds flock here. At sunset, the endless expanse of Africa feels truly magical.
Today’s stage runs mostly on paved roads with a few rough sections. Around midday, we reach Kasane — the gateway to Chobe National Park. The park is famous for its large elephant herds.
In the afternoon, we take a river safari on the Chobe River. Massive herds of elephants come to drink at the water’s edge. This moment gives you goosebumps and images you will never forget.
Today we cross the border into Zimbabwe and reach Victoria Falls. About 500 million liters of water plunge every minute from heights up to 108 meters. The mist rises up to 400 meters and can be seen from far away. This is one of the most impressive natural wonders on Earth.
Just below the falls sits the famous Victoria Falls Bridge. This historic bridge offers spectacular views and is a hotspot for bungee jumping.
Your passenger can enjoy the day in the Overland Truck while you tackle the roads on your rental motorcycle. This mix of travel options makes this tour stand out among African motorcycle adventures.
Questions about the tour itinerary?
Our tour guide is happy to answer any questions about the day-by-day route, stops, and details.
Bungee jumping, helicopter flights, zip-lining, or white-water rafting — pick your thrill. The railway bridge over the Zambezi was built in 1905 under Cecil Rhodes. Today it offers a 111-meter bungee jump.
All activities can be booked on-site. Prefer a calmer day? Walk along the thundering falls. The locals call them Mosi-oa-Tunya — “The Smoke That Thunders.” Up to 500 million liters per minute cascade over nearly two kilometers into the gorge.
The evening ends with a sundowner by the Zambezi River. A perfect day to recharge before the next riding stages.
We ride paved roads to Hwange National Park. In the afternoon, you can spot the Big Five on safari — a major highlight of this motorcycle tour.
Two safari drives today in Hwange, the largest national park in Zimbabwe. It covers about 14,650 square kilometers. The park hosts elephants, lions, leopards, buffalo, and rhinos. During the dry season, animals gather at waterholes for amazing viewing.
We also visit the Painted Dog Conservation Centre. The day ends with a sundowner over the vast savanna.
Mostly paved roads to Bulawayo. Here you can explore the Matobo Hills. This spiritual area features granite formations and ancient rock paintings — perfect for a short off-road ride.
We cross the border at Beitbridge back into South Africa. Then we reach the famous Kruger National Park. Elephants, lions, giraffes, and much more await — an epic finale to this African motorcycle adventure.
The entire day is for safari. Kruger was founded in 1898 and covers 19,485 square kilometers. It borders Mozambique and Zimbabwe. It is part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park.
Spot the Big Five in their natural habitat. Whether at a waterhole, during sunset, or on a game drive, Kruger is the grand finale of this tour.
The last stage is a direct ride back to Johannesburg on paved roads. Your African motorcycle journey ends here — but the memories stay forever.
Rental bikes like the BMW GS, or the more affordable BMW 650 or 750 GS, work perfectly for this tour. It is not about engine size — it is about your sense of adventure.
