ADVENTURE-TOURS · UGANDA
Gorilla trekking Uganda is the heart of this active 12-day small group journey through Uganda's most rewarding wilderness.
The Journey
Uganda
This gorilla trekking Uganda small group tour covers 12 active days across the country's most rewarding national parks, crater lakes, and wildlife corridors.
This uganda safari tour begins with a scenic drive from Entebbe to the Kasenda Crater Lakes region west of Fort Portal. The route passes villages, tea plantations, and forest as you gain altitude. More than 40 crater lakes lie south of Fort Portal, and the hilly landscape around them is ideal for hikes, mountain bike rides, or a scooter excursion. A visit to a local tea plantation can be arranged on request. Accommodation: Lodge or Bandas.
A local guide leads a full-day hike through nine crater lakes in the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park region, passing through Ugandan village settlements along the way. You learn how local families live, what they grow, and what a typical daily meal looks like. Nearly every crater lake shimmers a different color in the sunlight. Swimming is safe in several lakes, so bring your swimwear. Lunch is provided in a box. Accommodation: Lodge or Bandas.
Choose between a full-day mountain bike ride through the hilly crater lake landscape or a hike toward the hot springs at the foot of the Rwenzori Mountains Africa. The bike tour uses quality mountain bikes with helmets and water bottles included; the guide doubles as a mechanic. The Rwenzori hot-springs hike involves a 1-hour drive to the trailhead — bring swimwear. A third option is the village life program: join local families with fieldwork and cook a traditional Ugandan meal together. Please confirm your activity choice at booking. Accommodation: Lodge or Bandas.
After breakfast, the route heads to Queen Elizabeth National Park Uganda, crossing the equator for the first time. The park landscape is dominated by candelabra euphorbia trees with few large forest patches. A packed lunch is taken inside the park. In the afternoon, a two-hour boat trip on the Kazinga Channel provides close views of hippos, crocodiles, herons, and kingfishers along the shore. The drive back to the lodge in the late afternoon may reveal elephants grazing in the golden light. Accommodation: Simba Lodge.
An early morning open-roof game drive through the gorilla safari corridor of Queen Elizabeth NP targets lions, buffalo, and antelope in the morning light. After lunch, the route continues south to the Ishasha sector, where lions are known to climb fig trees in fine weather. A short detour through Ishasha is followed by a long mountain drive up to Bwindi gorilla trekking base at Buhoma. Accommodation: Camping or Bandas.
A full day on bikes through the steep forest roads surrounding the mountain gorilla trekking zone at Buhoma. The route climbs sharply and drops immediately, passing through patches of ancient rainforest. Colobus monkeys and forest birds are regular companions. The forest air is cool and the cycling is demanding but rewarding. Accommodation: Camping or Bandas.
Questions about the tour itinerary?
Our tour guide is happy to answer any questions about the day-by-day route, stops, and details.
The central experience of this trip: gorilla trekking Uganda in the Ruhija sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. At the park headquarters, rangers brief the group on gorilla behavior and trail protocol. The trek to the gorilla family takes 2–4 hours depending on the animals’ location. Once found, the group spends a full hour observing, photographing, and watching the gorillas interact. Gorilla permits must be booked separately. The afternoon is free. Accommodation: Camping or Bandas.
Two full days at Lake Bunyonyi Uganda, one of Africa’s most scenic crater lakes and one of the few considered bilharzia-free, making swimming safe and enjoyable. Accommodation options include lakeside tents or rooms with a direct lake view. Explore the lake’s islands by dugout canoe or kayak, swim from the shore, or simply rest. There is no packed itinerary here — these two days are built for recovery after the gorilla trek. Accommodation: Camping, Overland Resort.
After breakfast at the lake, the group drives south to Lake Mburo National Park, the only place in Uganda where eland antelopes and zebras can be found. The park shares its boundary with local pastoralist communities whose cattle graze at the park edge, giving it a distinct character. Afternoon time at the lodge before the evening game-viewing hours. Accommodation: Rwakobo Lodge.
After morning coffee or tea, a foot safari with an armed ranger covers the park on trails where gorilla trekking africa-grade terrain meets open savanna. The walk lasts about 1.5 hours, tracking eland, zebra, hippo, and warthog before returning for a lodge breakfast. In the afternoon, an optional queen elizabeth national park safari-style bike ride or vehicle safari loops through the park. Accommodation: Rwakobo Lodge.
An early morning departure heads back across Uganda to Entebbe on well-maintained roads. The long uganda safari drive includes a coffee stop at the equator, where souvenirs can be purchased. Several comfort stops are built into the schedule. In the early evening, the group arrives in Entebbe and, depending on your flight time, transfers directly to the airport after a group dinner or to a nearby lodge for overnight before a morning departure.
