The Journey

Hiking, Gorillas & Safari in Uganda

Rwenzori Mountains trekking sets this Uganda small group tour apart from any standard Africa itinerary. Unlike Kilimanjaro, the Rwenzori offers untouched forest, lobelias, mosses, and ferns from 3,000 m upward, climbing to just under 4,000 m. Best time: mid-December to early February when rainfall is lowest. Good endurance and sure footing are required. Nights are in basic huts with bunk beds. After the trek, the tour shifts to a Uganda safari across two national parks, followed by gorilla trekking uganda immersion in the Bwindi forests, and a rest day at the bilharzia-free shores of Lake Bunyonyi Uganda.

Uganda

This Rwenzori Mountains small group tour begins and ends in Entebbe, weaving through highland trekking, national park safaris, and gorilla trekking in Uganda's most iconic wilderness areas.

Days 1–17

Entebbe – Arrival

Arrive in Entebbe late in the evening or early morning. A team member meets you at the airport and transfers you to a nearby hotel or guesthouse. This is your settling-in day before the Rwenzori Mountains adventure begins.

Entebbe – Kasese / Rwenzori

Drive approximately 200 km from Entebbe to Kasese, passing through Kampala with a stop for currency exchange. Roads are well-maintained throughout. You overnight in a simple hotel close to the Ruwenzori trek starting point.

Trekking Day 1 – Sine Hut

Early start from the base station at Kilmebe. After a group briefing, you walk to the national park boundary — roughly one hour — then begin a steady ascent to Sine Hut at 2,596 m. Rwenzori mountains hiking begins here in earnest, with dense montane forest all around.

Trekking Day 2 – Mutinda Camp

Today's trail leads higher into the Rwenzori Mountains, reaching Mutinda Camp at 3,688 m, sheltered beneath a massive rock overhang. The vegetation shifts to giant heather and groundsel as altitude increases. A rewarding and physically demanding day on the ruwenzori mountains route.

Trekking Day 3 – Kibaro Camp

The descent phase of the Ruwenzori trek begins today. You make your way down to Kibaro Camp at 3,518 m, moving through moorland and alpine meadow. The pace is steady and the scenery shifts with each drop in elevation.

Trekking Day 4 – Salamira Camp

Continue the descent to Salamira Camp at 3,174 m. From this vantage point, wide views open across Kasese and the surrounding lowlands — one of the most rewarding panoramas on the rwenzori mountains hiking circuit.

Trekking Day 5 – Base Camp

Reach the base camp by early afternoon, completing the Ruwenzori trek. Say farewell to your mountain guides and porters with a group photo and a certificate ceremony. You then drive to the boundary of Queen Elizabeth National Park for an overnight stay.

Queen Elizabeth National Park Safari

A full day in Queen Elizabeth National Park begins with a dawn lion-tracking game drive. Midday break with a packed lunch inside the park, then an afternoon boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel — one of the top queen elizabeth national park safari highlights, with hippos, buffalo, and water birds lining the banks.

Ishasha – Bwindi Transfer

An early departure takes you south toward Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Depending on weather, you stop briefly in the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth Park to look for tree-climbing lions. By evening, you reach the lodge at the Bwindi forest boundary.

Questions about the tour itinerary?

Our tour guide is happy to answer any questions about the day-by-day route, stops, and details.

Gorilla Trekking – Ruhija

The centerpiece of the gorilla trekking Uganda experience: an early morning drive to the park headquarters in Ruhija. Rangers brief your group on gorilla behavior before you set off. The trek to find a habituated family can take 2–4 hours through dense forest. Once located, you spend one hour observing them — gorilla trekking at its most intimate. Afternoon is free.

Bwindi – Lake Bunyonyi

After breakfast, drive to Lake Bunyonyi Uganda for a rest day. The lake is considered bilharzia-free, so swimming is safe. You can rent a traditional dugout canoe and paddle among the islands, or simply relax on the shore after days of demanding gorilla trekking africa-level exertion.

Return to Entebbe

Breakfast, then the return drive to Entebbe. Transfer directly to the airport. If your flight departs early the following morning, the team arranges an overnight stay in a local guesthouse so no time is wasted.

Entebbe – Bwindi via Ishasha

Depart early for the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. En route, pass through the Ishasha wilderness sector of Queen Elizabeth Park, where sightings of tree-climbing lions are possible. Arrive at the Buhoma area of Bwindi by evening — the main gateway for bwindi gorilla trekking in the northern sector.

Gorilla Trekking – Ruhija

Second gorilla trekking day in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Meet rangers at the briefing point early, then head into the forest. The trek duration varies from 2 to 4 hours depending on where the gorilla family has moved. This is a true mountain gorilla trekking experience in one of Africa's densest rainforests.

Bwindi – Lake Mburo National Park

Leave the mountain rainforest and travel east to Lake Mburo National Park — the only place in Uganda where zebras, impalas, and elands share the same habitat. A short afternoon game walk or drive rounds out your Uganda safari before the final push toward Entebbe.

Lake Mburo – Entebbe

An early morning departure for the approximately 8-hour drive back to Entebbe on well-maintained roads. The route crosses the equator — a brief photo stop is traditional — and includes a coffee break with souvenir shopping. Arrive in Entebbe in the early evening for a shared farewell dinner or guesthouse check-in before your flight.

Departure

Final departure day. Transfer to Entebbe International Airport for your onward flight, completing this 17-day gorilla safari and Rwenzori Mountains expedition through Uganda. Safe travels.
