Daily program: Kenya motorcycle trip to the Masai Mara
Departure in Europe
Departure in Europe. You board the plane and fly towards your adventure. We are happy to assist you with booking your flights.
Day 1: Arrival in Nairobi
Welcome, warmly welcome! You will be picked up from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, named after Kenya's first president after independence. You will immediately experience the hectic city life of Nairobi, full of traffic and people on the move. The city of Nairobi has about 5 million inhabitants, which increases to 10 million when including the suburbs. The city is named after the Nairobi River and is located at an altitude of 1800 meters, making the temperature very pleasant in the summer months and quite cool at night. The city was officially founded in 1899 with the arrival of the railways. Today's program depends on whether you arrive in the morning or in the late afternoon/evening.
Day 2: Nairobi - Mount Kenya Gate (approx. 210 km)
Early rising to leave the city: We head north, quickly leave the main roads and follow country roads that lead through small towns. The roads will mainly consist of asphalt and some gravel. We quickly leave construction work, buildings, and traffic jams behind us and welcome village life, nature, and the lush hills. We pass through Aberdare National Park and head to Mount Kenya. Its highest peak is 5199 meters high. It was designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1978. The mountain plays an important role in the culture of the ethnic groups living there, such as the Kikuyu, Ameru, Embu, and Maasai. We will stay overnight in a simple accommodation at the foot of the mountain.
Day 3: Mount Kenya Gate - Marigat (approx. 220 km)
Today we will see a lot of gravel. We will drive through grassland, past wildlife farms, several wildlife reserves, and we will see a unique animal world. Watch out for possible pedestrian crossings! But also watch out for the cattle. Since it is a remote area, we need to make sure we have enough snacks and drinks with us, and we will prepare for a simple picnic on the way. Our destination today is near Lake Baringo, a paradise for bird watchers, whose freshwater is an oasis in the dry steppe. This is the traditional home of the Njemps tribe, a unique people who, as the only herding people, also engage in fishing. Our accommodation is located in a small trading town near the lake.
Day 4: Marigat - Molo (approx. 180 km)
Today we will make our way through West Kenya in a slalom fashion. We will drive over a mix of asphalt and gravel roads, passing villages and towns in the countryside. We will ride some sections without our support vehicle and take the mechanic on the motorcycle of the tour leader. While we start in the morning at an altitude of about 1500 meters, we will sleep at an altitude of 2500 meters. So pack your sweater!
Day 5: Molo - Maasai Mara (approx. 200 km)
Today is another adventurous day. We will bypass the main road heading south and explore paths and trails used only by the Maasai and wildlife. Again, there will be a track where we will distance ourselves from the support vehicle. You will notice that the landscape transitions into dry hills and there is less human activity. However, there are now more animals along the way. We will spend the night in a nice camp near the national park.
Day 6: Safari by car in the Maasai Mara
In a national park, no humans are allowed to live. It is hardly fenced. Apparently, that is enough for a rich animal life. The landscape in the Maasai Mara is wonderful. We let the motorcycles rest partially and take an optional safari by car where we encounter large herds of buffalo, wildebeest, zebras, and antelopes. Giraffes and lions cross or walk on the road. We can drive around in this beautiful wildlife park in Kenya until nightfall. There is also an option for a motorcycle safari! Bring enough batteries and memory cards for your camera, because it is really beautiful. A true safari experience! **Note: The safari can be optionally booked on-site.
Day 7: Maasai Mara - Lake Naivasha (approx. 225 km)
We set off early to turn the wheels of our motorcycles again. In the morning, there is a lot of wildlife along the road. We follow a long gravel path until we reach the asphalt towards Narok. Then we enter green land again, green highland. We make our way to Lake Naivasha. The lake and its surroundings are rich in natural wealth, and the fertile soils and water supply have made this area one of the best agricultural regions in Kenya. There are many (Dutch) flower farmers here. We spend the night by the lake.
Day 8: Naivasha - Nairobi (approx. 150 km)
Our last day, but not the final one. We start with an optional boat trip, enjoy the birds living and visit the hypo-pool. Then we fire up the engines again. We will drive a mix of asphalt, spectacular tracks, and unpaved roads towards Nairobi. We pass the Mount Suswa Conservancy and drive through the Ngong Hills Natural Reserve. The closer we get to Nairobi, the busier it becomes. Air pollution, traffic jams, tall buildings, and people on the move. Upon arrival in Nairobi, there is a well-deserved drink to celebrate and share our memories.
Day 9: Departure
Depending on when your flight goes, you either have to leave very early for the airport or have the day to explore Nairobi: the Maasai Market, Nairobi National Park, one of the big shopping centers, or just to relax at the hotel. But then it's time to say goodbye. For an extension of the trip to the Kenyan coast or other adventures, the country and its people invite you to do so. From relaxing on the beach to mountain climbing, everything is possible in Kenya and the neighboring countries! To all those flying home, we wish you a pleasant and safe journey home and hope to have you back on one of our adventures soon!
