The idea of the expedition tour from the southernmost point of Africa to just below the equator came about during the planning of the Trans Africa Enduro Expedition. Due to the extreme challenge and distance, we have split the Trans Africa Tour into two stages. This (first stage) takes you through the most exciting part south of the equator over three weeks, on partly very civilized stages. On and off-road, this motorcycle tour is anything but a "package safari" for road riders, but exclusively for "enduro riders".

Introduction to the Equator Expedition

Thierry Sabine, founder of the rally from Paris to Dakar, was known for his motto "if life gets boring, risk it" and led his participants over 6,000 kilometers from Europe to Dakar. The Equator Expedition ahead of you is not quite as spectacular and dangerous, but with nearly the same distance, it is worryingly adventurous. Over approximately 6,000 kilometers, we will traverse southern Africa on this motorcycle safari in just three weeks. We guarantee you dusty as well as muddy kilometers full of deprivation, effort, and fascinating experiences that will accompany you for a lifetime! Not quite as extreme as the second part of the TransAfrica Expedition, this first part of the motorcycle expedition is only suitable for participants who are ready to "enjoy" lungs full of dust, bags full of mud, and pure adventure in their tired bones. This road & gravel "combination tour" takes you through South Africa, Lesotho, Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Tanzania, up to Kenya and includes 6,000 dangers, sights, impressions, and adventures that would normally require three months of travel time. However, time is unfortunately what there will not be on this expedition. When the sun rises over Africa, a new day full of adventures begins for us, which only ends with the sunset, to keep us breathless again with the first rays of sunlight hundreds of kilometers later.

Arrival Day: Transcontinental Flight to South Africa

The sun rises, the Rainbow Nation of South Africa below us. 07:00 AM Touch down at OR Tambo Airport for breakfast where we will meet the team. Together we head to Cape Town where we will land at 11:00 AM and be taken by bus to the camp, where we just need to pick up the customs paperwork. After we check the papers and motorcycles, it's time for a “lekker” meal. Check in at the Cape Grace Hotel at the Alfred and Victoria Waterfront, with delicious five-star food and great company through the night? - Not at all, we drink beer, eat crocodile, and sleep in tents with our bikes “at the gates” of Cape Town!

Start of the South Equator Tour

At Cape of Good Hope, we will take the “starting picture” after sunrise! We will never be this young and especially this fresh together again. Kilometer 0: At 9:00 AM, it starts: Once across southern Africa! At the bay near Somerset West we make a quick stop at Joe's Safari Camp for a breakfast “to go”, or rather “to drive”.... to Chapman's Peak Drive. We will likely take our first pictures and recordings of a long day on this route, before reaching the legendary and relaxed Garden Route Mosel Bay to have something substantial to eat. Breakfast and dinner will be the only meals we will have for the next 21 days. A benefit for all those who have a few extra pounds and will leave them behind day by day on the road. In the late afternoon we will reach George before sunset, and we will conclude the first travel day with a South African sundowner.

Tour Day: Adrenaline on the Garden Route to the Grave!

For the first time we pack the tents and start again. Enjoying thoughtful conversations with the visor along the Garden Route, we relish the conversation without ifs and buts. This is life, as long as we are still alive? Life is boring...... After about 500 kilometers of asphalt and gravel we reach the grave of Harry Potter. Time for a prayer and some time to lie down, because tomorrow is a new day with new adventures in South Africa.

Safari Day: Ascend to the Kingdom of Lesotho!

Sunrise: We break down camp and head for the 60 kilometers distant place Hofmeyr. In this bleak transit town we make our breakfast stop and fill up tanks and feed bags for today’s marathon day. Today's stage with around 650 kilometers distance will be one of the toughest stages of the first week. Via federal roads through the province of KwaZulu Natal, we will reach the border to the Kingdom of Lesotho after about 250 kilometers.

Enduro Adventure Africa, Descent to the Battlefield.

Early in the morning we go up the famous Sani Pass. We have reached the highest point of our Trans-Africa expedition safari and enjoy this cold morning with a cup of hot coffee on a plateau that is impressive. Like every morning, we start the engines of the enduros and off-road vehicles as an introduction to a new adventure. Over 1000 meters of altitude we then go down the most thrilling of all South African passes. The Sani Pass is the most photographed and most traveled pass in Lesotho. Many enduro riders from the last South Africa tours stated that just this pass is worth the trip. At the foot of the Drakensberg Mountains, we reach the border back to South Africa. After our third border crossing on this enduro and off-road expedition, we stand on the “Battlefields” in the former kingdom of the Zulu. The Zulu War of 1879 was an undeclared war between the Zulu and the wild tribe of tea drinkers. After the British Empire defeated the Zulu in the Battle of Ulundi with its superior firepower, the kingdom of the Zulu ceased to exist as a sovereign state. In the midst of these battlefields, our fifth travel day through Africa ends.

Ascent to the King in Swaziland.

Morning ceremony: Quick look at the map, start the motorcycles and then off for the next coffee. On the road again: We disappear across South Africa's country roads with our enduro motorcycles into the kingdom of Swaziland. It’s almost all on asphalt through the mountainous kingdom to Hlane Royal National Park. Hlane Royal National Park is home to the largest herds of lions, elephants, white rhinos, giraffes, and a whole range of animals here in Swaziland.

Day's goal is the northern border of Kruger Park

The last day of the old year begins relaxed: Calmly pack the seven things, enjoy breakfast and then 220 kilometers through the forests of Swaziland and the remaining kilometers to Hazyview! In the afternoon we reach our lodge and fill ALL tanks.

Last travel day along the border of Kruger Park to the north of South Africa

The new day in Africa begins with a hangover breakfast, coffee, aspirin, and a beer to counteract. On the enduros, gently start the engine and head out for a recovery tour along green roads and through tropical-looking forests. After over 3,000 kilometers, we have crossed the states of Western Cape, Eastern Cape, Kwazulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, and Limpopo up to this point and are now making our way to the border to Zimbabwe.

Through the Land of the Shona

Welcome to Zimbabwe! After we have handled the customs formalities for the enduros and off-road vehicles, we can get started, the next stage goal is Masvingo, which we will approach via the main route. About 40 kilometers of this we will stop at Great Zimbabwe and dive into a piece of African history. We will continue to head North-Northwest and after an impressive day filled with culture, history, and many kilometers, we will rest our heads again.

Adrenaline Shock Victoria Falls

With the sunrise over Africa, a new tour day begins. Pack the tents, a sip of coffee, a cookie, and up on the motorcycle / travel enduro, on- and off-road towards North-Northwest. Stopover at Hwange National Park. Depending on the tour progress, group dynamics, and interest, we will go on safari at Hwange National Park. Motorcycle trips / enduro trips are rather unusual in Zimbabwe, enduro routes are practically unknown, and this will remain the case for the upcoming countries! Before booking, be aware that you are going on an enduro expedition that will provide a lot of surprises both on and off-road!

The 'Cape to Cairo' - Plan: Following in the Footsteps of Cecil Rhodes

With the sunrise begins our morning ritual, cup of coffee in hand, bike check, discussing the daily stage and GO: At 128 meters height, we cross on English steel and wooden beams, the Victoria Falls Bridge built in England in 1903. This bridge was commissioned by Cecil Rhodes in 1903 and was transported by sea and rail freight from England to Victoria Falls to set another milestone for the 'Cape to Cairo' plan.

Explore the young Zambia

Young Zambia (born 1964) is the country with the highest HIV infection rate, counting about 740,000 AIDS orphans among the orphanages of Africa. Alongside Bantu languages, English is spoken as the main language, which helps us navigate through the various ethnic groups and languages, such as Nsenga, Tumbuka, Ngoni, and Bisa. We will not continue in the footsteps of Cecil Rhodes, but rather leave our own mark.

Enduro Expedition along Lake Malawi

With the first rays of sunshine, we head for the last kilometers towards Northeast through Zambia to the border crossing into Malawi. Our travel day will only be interrupted by the waiting time at the border station, which we can use for breakfast, refueling, brushing teeth, and writing postcards. With a lot of luck, we get served quickly and thus avoid writing postcards!

On and off the road through Malawi and Tanzania

We enjoy the sunrise over Lake Malawi with a cup of coffee. The route runs along the western flank of the approximately 30,000 km² large Lake Malawi. We will approach the border to Tanzania as we are used to 'pole pole' (Swahili: slowly). While the border formalities are being processed, we can enjoy the “delicacies” of the Songwe border river.

A Day at the Edge of the Ngorongoro Crater

Breakfast with freshly brewed coffee straight from the plantation - if not now, when then? We will need the pushing effect of coffee for the endless expanses of Tanzania. We will cross Tanzania towards Arusha, and on the way lies the Ngorongoro Crater, which we can visit by agreement.

Last Ride to Kenya

When the sun rises behind Kilimanjaro, we fire up the machines, rock and roll, the adventure can begin! Through the wide expanse to the Kenyan horizon to Mount Longido. Refuel, eat, GAS! The next stop is the border to Kenya. After crossing from Tanzania to Kenya, we reach Nairobi, where we will spend a cozy last evening together with a Kenyan “Tusker” beer and enjoy “Nyama Choma” (grilled meat), before heading back home the next day.
