Introduction to the motorcycle tour through the Argentine Atacama
You will be picked up at the airport in Salta and taken to the hotel, from where your motorcycle adventure starts the next day. After a short introduction to the tour and information about Salta, you can spend the rest of the day at your leisure. Through a winding paved road through forested mountains, you will reach the Quebrada de Humahuaca, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. On gravel roads, you will reach the 4000 m high Abra del Condor and the mountain village of Iruya, surrounded by colorful rock walls. There is a 5-hour hike to a plateau with impressive views. Further north, near the Bolivian border, you will visit Yavi with its historical church and rock paintings. Afterwards, you will explore the Laguna de los Pozuelos at 4000 m with its unique flora and fauna. Over the 4200 m high Cuesta de Lipan pass, you will go to the dazzling white Salinas Grandes. After a winding paved road, a gravel road leads to the La Polvorilla viaduct, part of the "Train in the Clouds." A highlight awaits at Abra El Acay, the highest pass in Argentina at 4895 m. The ride offers spectacular views of the Puna plateau. Back to Salta, you will drive relaxed on good roads through the colorful Quebrada del Toro valley. The Atacama Desert in Argentina is considered the driest region in the world and stretches for about 1,000 kilometers along the Pacific coast of South America. With heights of up to 4,000 meters, the Atacama impresses with its unique landscape of salt flats, volcanoes, and geysers. Due to the extremely clear sky, the Atacama is a significant location for astronomy. The region attracts both tourists and scientists who explore its fascinating geological and climatic features. Precipitation is almost nonexistent here.
Daily program: On 2 wheels over the highest pass in Argentina
Day 1: Arrival in Salta
You will be picked up at the airport in Salta and taken to the hotel from which the tour will start the next day. After a brief introduction to the motorcycle tour and information about Salta, the rest of the day is free for you to explore.
Day 2: Quebrada de Humahuaca
Today’s very intense day first takes us along a winding paved road - a motorbike paradise - through wooded mountains to the picturesque Quebrada de Humahuaca, a gorge declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2003. We reach the 4000m high Abra del Condor pass and the charming mountain village of Iruya, which is surrounded by colorful rock walls and located at a narrow point of the valley.
Day 3: Valley of Iruya
In the morning we will take a mountain hike of about 5 hours up to a plateau with overwhelming views of the valley of Iruya. The afternoon is free for you to experience the life in the traditional mountain village of Iruya.
Day 4: Iglesia de San Franzisco
Coming back over the Abra del Condor to the paved road, we continue north towards the Bolivian border, where we reach the remote village of Yavi. There you can visit the historic church Iglesia de San Franzisco, the rock paintings of Las Cuevas, and the petroglyphs of Laguna Colorada.
Day 5: Laguna de los Pozuelos
We explore the extreme northwest corner of Argentina and reach the deeply cut Angosto Canyon before we circle the sweeping landscapes of the national monument Laguna de los Pozuelos. This lagoon at almost 4000m is home to a unique fauna and flora. Then we go back down to the Quebrada de Humahuaca for an overnight stay in the lively town of Tilcara.

Day 6: Salt Lake Salinas Grandes
First, we visit the ruins of the fortress village Pucarás de Tilcara from pre-Inca times before heading over the 4200m high pass 'Cuesta de Lipan' to the dazzling white salt lake Salinas Grandes. After a short drive along winding paved roads, we turn onto a partially sandy gravel road that leads us through a hidden valley to the La Polvorilla viaduct of the famous 'Train in the Clouds'. After a short drive, we reach the mining town of San Antonio de los Cobres.
Day 7: Abra El Acay!
Today a special motorcycle adventure awaits us: We will conquer the highest pass in Salta and Argentina, the 4895m high Abra El Acay! The path winds gradually up the mountain to the pass and we can enjoy the spectacular view of the vast plains of the Puna from 5 km above sea level. After this breathtaking motorcycle ride, we take a leisurely drive back on good paved roads following the 'Train in the Clouds' through the colorful Quebrada del Toro valley back to Salta.
Day 8: Return Home
Today you will be taken to the airport by us, where you will take with you only impressive impressions, many good memories, and our farewell gift on your return flight.
