South Patagonia Motorcycle Trip
Introduction to the motorcycle tour through Patagonia
Patagonia! On a two-week tour, we will travel from the paradise lake region around Bariloche through the Los Alerces National Park and continue along the Carretera Austral in Chile and Route 40 through the steppes of Argentina to southern Patagonia. There we will visit the jagged rock masses of Fitz Roy, Cerro Torre, and Torres del Paine, as well as the famous Perito Moreno Glacier, and push through the Magellan Strait to the island of Tierra del Fuego and to the southernmost city in the world, Ushuaia. The total distance is about 3600 km.
Daily program: The southernmost motorcycle trip in the world: from Bariloche to Ushuaia
Day 1: Arrival
You will be picked up at the airport in Bariloche and taken to the hotel from where the tour starts the next day. After a brief introduction to the motorcycle tour and information about Salta, the rest of the day is yours to enjoy.
Day 2: Los Alerces National Park
First, you head south on Ruta 40 towards El Bolsón, and then through Los Alerces National Park to Trevelin. About 310 km, of which 100 km are gravel roads.
Day 3: Carretera Austral
Border crossing into Chile and we come across the legendary Carretera Austral, which we will follow for the next few days. The very humid climate of this landscape formed by glacial erosion provides lush green vegetation and rushing rivers against an imposing mountain backdrop. Approximately 230 km of gravel roads.
Day 4: Coihayque
Today we will drive one of the most beautiful sections of the Carretera Austral to Coihayque. First, we will look at a hanging glacier, then we will go over the Queulat Pass to Manihuales and from there continue on a good and partially winding paved road to Coihayque. About 240 km, of which 80 km are gravel roads.
Day 5: Lake General Carrera
In the next two days we will circle the green shimmering Lake Lago General Carrera. First, we will visit the Salto del Ibañez waterfall before continuing past the jagged mountain massif Cerro Castillo, through the Valley of the Dead Forest and the village of Baihia Murta to Puerto Rio Tranquilo. A little further south we reach the southern tip of the lake, leave the Carretera Austral there, and arrive at the idyllic Terra Luna Lodge near Puerto Guadal. About 275 km, including 200 km of gravel roads.
Day 6: Argentina
First, we travel at dizzying heights along the southern shore of Lake Lago General Carrera toward Argentina. In good weather, spectacular views of the Northern Ice Field appear in the distance. At Chile Chico, we cross the border into Argentina. We continue our adventure along the old, unpaved Ruta 40 along the Argentine Andes. Through stunning landscapes, we arrive at the nice village of Lago Las Posadas, situated in a splendid environment. About 350 km, almost all gravel roads.
Day 7: Route 40 to the south
Looking towards the Perito Moreno National Park, we arrive at the tiny village of Bajo Caracoles. From there, we follow Route 40 south to a wide valley where the Estancia La Angostura still raises thousands of sheep and cattle in the traditional way on its lush pastures. (With good conditions and enough time, we can visit the famous rock paintings of the Cueva de las Manos) Overnight stay at a traditional Estancia. About 330 km, partly gravel roads.
Day 8: Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre
First, we reach Lake Lago Viedma and the small village of El Chaltén, which crouches under the notorious granite towers Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre. In the afternoon, if possible, optional hike to the viewpoint of Fitz Roy. About 270 km, partly gravel roads.
Day 9: Perito Moreno Glacier
Early in the morning we head back to Route 40, where we drive south and then along the emerald-green Lake Argentino to El Calafate. In the afternoon, visit to the famous Perito Moreno Glacier. Approx. 360 km.
Day 10: Chile - Torres del Paine National Park
Back to the junction and continue on Ruta 40 on the way up to a high plateau, amazing views back to the mountains open up. We continue to the border to Chile and the Torres del Paine National Park. Overnight stay at an original Chilean Estancia where we will spend a cozy evening. About 250 km, of which 60 km are gravel roads.
Day 11: Puerto Natales
We approach the Torres del Paine National Park with spectacular views. In the park, we will see waterfalls, mountain lakes, condors, wild llamas, nandus, and foxes, and of course, we will be able to admire the breathtaking rock spires of the Torres and Cuernos massif. In the afternoon, we will continue to the town of Puerto Natales. About 250 km, of which 200 km are dirt roads.
Day 12: Punta Arenas
Again heading south Villa Pehuelche continues on a windy road to Punta Arenas, and we pass a lagoon with flamingos and will visit the Otway Penguin Colony. About 300 km, of which 50 km are gravel roads.
Day 13: Fire Land
With the ferry, we cross the Magellan Strait to the island of Tierra del Fuego and continue on gravel roads to the Argentine border. After a short drive, we reach Rio Grande where we will rest today after a windy journey. About 400 km.
Day 14: Ushuaia
In the morning we first drive through windy coastal regions and then via Tolhuin, Lake Fagnano, and over the Garibaldi Pass to the southernmost city in the world, Ushuaia. To complete the journey to the end of the world, we drive a little further through Tierra del Fuego National Park until the road ends: the real end of the (civilized) world! In the evening we enjoy our well-deserved farewell dinner. About 200 km.
Day 15: Departure
Today we will take you to the airport, where you will only take impressive experiences, many beautiful memories, and our farewell gift with you on your return flight.
