Today we will drive one of the most beautiful sections of the Carretera Austral to Coihayque. First, we will look at a hanging glacier, then we will go over the Queulat Pass to Manihuales and from there continue on a good and partially winding paved road to Coihayque. About 240 km, of which 80 km are gravel roads.
First, we travel at dizzying heights along the southern shore of Lake Lago General Carrera toward Argentina. In good weather, spectacular views of the Northern Ice Field appear in the distance. At Chile Chico, we cross the border into Argentina. We continue our adventure along the old, unpaved Ruta 40 along the Argentine Andes. Through stunning landscapes, we arrive at the nice village of Lago Las Posadas, situated in a splendid environment. About 350 km, almost all gravel roads.
Looking towards the Perito Moreno National Park, we arrive at the tiny village of Bajo Caracoles. From there, we follow Route 40 south to a wide valley where the Estancia La Angostura still raises thousands of sheep and cattle in the traditional way on its lush pastures. (With good conditions and enough time, we can visit the famous rock paintings of the Cueva de las Manos) Overnight stay at a traditional Estancia. About 330 km, partly gravel roads.
First, we reach Lake Lago Viedma and the small village of El Chaltén, which crouches under the notorious granite towers Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre. In the afternoon, if possible, optional hike to the viewpoint of Fitz Roy. About 270 km, partly gravel roads.
