Daily program: Overland Safari Dar es Salaam - Victoria Falls
Day 1: Dar es Salaam to Mikumi National Park
We leave the coast behind and head inland where we settle into our accommodation for the night in Mikumi. The Mikumi National Park is the fourth largest park in Tanzania and forms part of the 75,000 square kilometers of wilderness centered in Selous, Africa's largest wildlife reserve.
Day 2: Iringa
We start the day early in the morning and enjoy an extensive safari drive in Mikumi National Park. In the afternoon, we continue our tour into the southern Highlands of Tanzania and our final stop in this country. Optional: Mikumi National Park safari drive.
Day 3: Lake Malawi
We are leaving Tanzania and heading down into the Great Rift Valley where we cross the border into Malawi. This land located on the shores of the lake, also known as the "Warm Heart of Africa," is blessed with its natural beauty. Our destination for tonight is the shores of Lake Malawi, where we are already looking forward to enjoying the attractions of the northern lake region in the coming days. In the afternoon, we will pay a visit to a local community to meet the residents of the lake. Included highlight: Malawi village tour.
Day 4: Lake Malawi
Today offers a variety of optional activities or just a day at the beach. There are also some different hiking trails, one of which is relatively strenuous and more for the adventurous (8-12h), up to the mission village of Livingstonia, which is situated high above the lake. Snorkeling in the crystal-clear waters of the lake offers the chance to see the brightly colored tropical cichlid face to face, a small fish often seen in colorful aquariums around the world. Your guide will assist you in planning your activities for the coming days, or you can simply relax on the shores of the lake. Optional activity: snorkeling, Livingstonia hike (for the adventurous).
Day 5: Lake Malawi
This morning we get into our truck and drive further south along Lake Malawi. Our destination tonight is the coast of Lake Malawi. The lake stretches over 500km along Malawi's western border and is home to more fish species than any other lake. We will spend the night at this natural wonder.
Day 6: Lake Malawi
Today is another day of relaxation by the lake. Use the time to read a book, lie in the sun, or enjoy the many attractions.
Day 7: South Luangwa
This morning we enjoy one last time the sunrise on the shores of Lake Malawi before we continue our tour to Zambia and the South Luangwa National Park. After crossing the border, we make a short stop in Chipata before we continue to our camp on the banks of the Luangwa River. After the sunrise we experienced over Lake Malawi, we will witness just as spectacular a sunset on the Luangwa River this evening.
Day 8: South Luangwa
South Luangwa National Park is a top-notch destination for safaris, and we will spend the entire day here in search of the numerous wildlife that lives here. In the morning, you can participate in an optional morning safari drive, or join a safari walk during the dry season (April to December), which are offered in the park. In the afternoon, we will stay in the park until sunset and have time for a sundowner between day and night. The unique opportunity to visit the park at night gives us the chance to experience some of the nocturnal species that are rarely seen during the day. Included highlight: Sunset safari in South Luangwa National Park. Optional activity: Safari walk (season-dependent) or morning safari drive in South Luangwa.
Day 9: Petauke
We leave the Luangwa Valley in the morning and make a stop at Tribal Textiles. The area around Chipata is one of the main production sites for cotton and here we get a feel for the creativity of African culture. Those who are interested can take a tour through their workshops (March to December) afterwards to see how these colorful fabrics are made. Our destination for tonight is the small town of Petauke. Included highlight: Tribal Textiles project visit (available March to December).
Day 10: Lusaka
We follow the Great East Road, an important connection between Lusaka and neighboring Malawi, which winds through rural Zambia and we cross the Luangwa River on our way to Lusaka. Today's route is dotted with small villages and the farms that are vital to the operators, the landscape presents itself to us here as a strong contrast to the highly developed countries many of us come from.
Day 11: Victoria Falls
We cross the southern foothills of Zambia and approach the adventure of Victoria Falls, and in the afternoon we can catch our first glimpse of the mighty Victoria Falls. Crossing the bridge between Zambia and Zimbabwe, we get an impression of “Musi oa Tunya,” the smoke that thunders, as the waterfalls are popularly called. The Victoria Falls offer a lot of optional activities that can be booked upon your arrival at the Victoria Falls. The journey ends after reaching the waterfalls.
