The Journey

Overland Safari from Dar es Salaam

This victoria falls tour follows the water the entire way — from the Indian Ocean at Dar es Salaam through Mikumi National Park in Tanzania, across the border into Malawi for several days along Lake Malawi's idyllic beaches, then into Zambia for a malawi safari extension in South Luangwa National Park, and finally to Zimbabwe where the journey ends at the Victoria Falls. The dar es salaam to victoria falls overland route is a comfortable yet challenging africa overland tour that combines wildlife, beach time, and cultural visits across the southern part of the continent.

Tanzania

The victoria falls tour begins in Tanzania, departing Dar es Salaam and heading inland through the wildlife corridors of the east.

Days 1–2
Mikumi Nationalpark

Dar es Salaam – Mikumi National Park

This victoria falls tour departs Dar es Salaam and heads inland, leaving the Indian Ocean coast behind. We reach Mikumi National Park by evening — Tanzania's fourth largest protected area and part of the 75,000 sq km Selous wilderness, one of Africa's greatest game reserves. We settle into our accommodation and prepare for the days ahead.

Mikumi Nationalpark

Mikumi – Iringa (Tanzania)

We rise early for an extensive game drive through Mikumi National Park, scanning the plains for elephants, lions, zebras, and giraffes. This malawi tours itinerary then pushes south into Tanzania's southern highlands toward Iringa — our final overnight stop before crossing into Malawi. Optional: additional morning safari drive in Mikumi.

Malawi

The Malawi stage is the heart of this southern africa safari — several days on the shore of Lake Malawi, Africa's third-largest lake, known as the Warm Heart of Africa.

Days 3–6
Lake Malawi

Tanzania Border – Lake Malawi

We leave Tanzania, descending through the Great Rift Valley and crossing into Malawi — the 'Warm Heart of Africa.' This lake malawi tour day ends on the northern shores of Lake Malawi, where we visit a local village community in the afternoon to meet residents and learn about life along the lake. Included highlight: Malawi village tour.

Malawi See

Lake Malawi – Beach & Activities

A full day of choice on the shores of Lake Malawi. This is one of the best days of any malawi safari itinerary — snorkel the crystal-clear waters to spot colorful tropical cichlids, or take on the challenging 8–12 hour hike to the mission village of Livingstonia perched high above the lake. Your guide helps you plan, or you simply relax on the beach. Optional: snorkeling, Livingstonia hike.

Malawi See

Lake Malawi – Southern Coast

We board the truck and travel further south along Lake Malawi, which stretches more than 500 km along Malawi's western border and holds more fish species than any other lake on earth. This malawi tours and safaris route follows the shoreline to our next lakeside camp, where we spend another night at this remarkable natural wonder.

Malawi See

Lake Malawi – Free Day

A second free day on the lake shore with no fixed schedule. Read, swim, explore local markets, or take an optional canoe adventure across the bay. The east africa overland tour pace slows here intentionally — Lake Malawi rewards those who linger. Use this time to recharge before the Zambia wildlife stages ahead.

Zambia

Zambia brings this southern africa safari into prime wildlife territory — South Luangwa National Park is one of Africa's top game-viewing destinations.

Days 7–10
Luangwa Fluss

Lake Malawi – South Luangwa, Zambia

After a final sunrise over Lake Malawi, we cross into Zambia and head toward South Luangwa National Park. A brief stop in Chipata breaks the drive before we continue to our camp on the banks of the Luangwa River. The sunset over the Luangwa this evening is as striking as anything seen on the lake. This leg of the africa overland tour marks a shift from beach to bush.

Luangwa Nationalpark

South Luangwa National Park Safari

A full day in South Luangwa National Park — one of Africa's finest wildlife areas and the highlight of this south luangwa safari. Morning optional game drive or a guided walking safari during the dry season (April–December). In the afternoon we stay until sunset, then continue into the park after dark for a rare night drive to find leopards, hyenas, and other nocturnal species. Included: Sunset safari in South Luangwa. Optional: walking safari or morning drive.

Chipata Markt

South Luangwa – Petauke

We depart the Luangwa Valley and stop at the Tribal Textiles workshop near Chipata — an enterprise in one of Zambia's main cotton-producing regions. Tour the workshops to see how vibrant African fabrics are designed and crafted. This zambia safari tour cultural stop is available March to December. We continue to the small town of Petauke for the night. Included: Tribal Textiles project visit.

Luangwa Fluss

Petauke – Lusaka

We join the Great East Road — a vital overland corridor connecting Lusaka to neighboring Malawi — and follow it west through rural Zambia. The route crosses the Luangwa River and passes small villages and farms that sustain local communities. This overland tour africa leg offers a candid look at everyday Zambian life before we reach the capital city of Lusaka for the night.

Zimbabwe

The dar es salaam to victoria falls route ends here — at one of the world's greatest natural spectacles on the Zambezi River.

Day 11
Victoriafällen

Lusaka – Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

The final day of this victoria falls tour crosses Zambia's southern foothills and arrives at the Zambezi River. As we cross the iconic bridge between Zambia and Zimbabwe, the spray of Victoria Falls — locally known as 'Mosi-oa-Tunya,' the smoke that thunders — comes into view. The victoria falls trip ends here, with a full menu of optional activities available on arrival: white-water rafting, bungee jumping, scenic flights, and guided walk along the gorge. The journey concludes at the Falls.
