Zambia

The victoria falls tour begins in Zambia, covering the great waterfall, Lusaka, Petauke and the wildlife-rich South Luangwa National Park on this zambia safari tour.

Days 1–4
Victoriafällen

Victoria Falls – Lusaka

The victoria falls tour opens at the Zambian bank of Mosi-oa-Tunya, where you catch a final look at the falls before the truck rolls east. Colorful markets, bustling villages and wide rural scenes form the backdrop as the route crosses Zambia toward Lusaka, the capital since 1935. A prepared meal and a briefing from your guides close the day, setting the stage for the overland journey ahead.

Mto wa Mbu Market im Dorf Mto

Lusaka – Petauke

Leaving Lusaka on this malawi safari approach route, the Great East Road winds east toward Petauke, crossing the mighty Luangwa River through landscapes of villages and subsistence farms. A stop at Luangwa Market reveals hand-carved miniature hippos, woven baskets, papyrus rugs and local fruit including masau and masaku — vivid proof of the creativity woven through this zambia malawi tour corridor.

Luangwa Nationalpark

Petauke – South Luangwa

The truck heads toward the banks of the Luangwa River on this south luangwa safari approach day. A stop at Mulberry Mongoose lets you browse jewelry handcrafted by local women using organic materials from the African bush. The Chipata area, a significant cotton-producing region, hints at the land's productive character before a cold-drink sundowner on the river bank ends the evening in style.

Luangwa Fluss

South Luangwa National Park

South Luangwa National Park, declared a park in 1972, is a premier stop on any east africa overland tour. A full day of exploration includes an optional morning walking safari during the dry season (April to December), a guided sunset drive and the chance to spot nocturnal species after dark. Lions, leopards, elephants and hippos move through this protected river corridor in one of Zambia's finest wildlife parks.

Malawi

Crossing into Malawi brings the warm heart of Africa and three days on the shores of Lake Malawi, a core lake malawi tour experience on this malawi tours and safaris route.

Days 5–7

South Luangwa – Lake Malawi

The truck crosses into Malawi this morning, heading for the shores of Lake Malawi, the southernmost lake in the East African Rift System. Discovered by David Livingstone in 1859, the lake stretches over 500 km along Malawi's western border and holds more fish species than any other lake on Earth. This malawi safari day ends at the water's edge, where the scale of this natural wonder becomes fully clear at sunset.

Lake Malawi

Lake Malawi – Rest Day

A dedicated lake malawi tour day means the agenda is yours. Read, sunbathe, swim or join an optional guided hike to Dwanbazi waterfall, a 30-minute drive from Nglala Beach Hotel. The falls reward the short walk with panoramic views over lush green hillsides, and the clean lake waters below offer a refreshing swim on the return — a calm highlight on any malawi tours itinerary.

Lake Malawi – Village Walk

The route continues north along Lake Malawi's shoreline on this overland safari africa segment, with one more night beside the water. In the afternoon your guide leads a village walk through a nearby community, where local daily life unfolds in its natural rhythm. The day finishes with the lake's wide sunset viewed from the beach — a quiet, grounding close to the Malawi chapter of this overland africa camping tour.

Tanzania

Tanzania opens across the Great Rift Valley escarpment on this east africa overland tour, covering Mbeya, Iringa, and two full days in Mikumi National Park before the ferry to Zanzibar.

Days 8–12

Lake Malawi – Mbeya

The truck heads north across the border into Tanzania, climbing toward Mbeya, founded during the gold rush of the 1920s and now a key agricultural center in the country's southwest. Tonight's base is the Utengule Coffee Lodge, a fitting introduction to Tanzania's highland landscape and the coffee country that will unfold further on this tanzania overland tour tomorrow.

Questions about the tour itinerary?

Our tour guide is happy to answer any questions about the day-by-day route, stops, and details.

Mbeya – Iringa

Before the road climbs the Great Rift Valley toward Iringa, the group stops at a local coffee plantation to witness the full cultivation and harvesting process and taste freshly prepared beans. Iringa, established as a German military post in the late 19th century, retains much of its colonial architecture. The stop is a sensory anchor on this east africa overland tour before reaching camp for the night.

Mikumi Nationalpark

Iringa – Mikumi

The morning drive delivers a brief stop in Baobab Valley, where ancient trees cast dramatic shadows across the savannah — a natural photo opportunity on any overland safari africa route. Then the truck reaches Mikumi National Park, Tanzania's fourth-largest protected area, embedded within the 75,000 sq km Selous ecosystem. An optional game drive is available today for those wanting an early look at the park's wildlife.

Mikumi Nationalpark

Mikumi National Park

A full day in Mikumi National Park gives you time to book additional optional safaris or join one of the cultural tours on offer. Established in 1964, Mikumi is home to large herds of buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, elephant and giraffe, making it a rewarding stop on any victoria falls safari tour itinerary that extends deep into Tanzania before reaching the coast.

Dar es Salaam

Mikumi – Dar es Salaam

The route descends from the highlands toward the Indian Ocean on this final mainland leg of the east africa overland tour. Dar es Salaam, established in the 1860s, is Tanzania's largest city and a vital port. An overnight here sets up an early morning departure for the Zanzibar ferry, closing the mainland chapter of this victoria falls to zanzibar tour journey.

Zanzibar

The zanzibar safari tour finale spans four days on the island, from Stone Town's UNESCO streets and spice farms to free beach days and the return ferry to Dar es Salaam.

Days 13–16
Stone Town Tansania

Dar es Salaam – Stone Town

An early ferry crosses to Zanzibar Island, where the group checks into a hotel in Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognized for its layered blend of African, Arab, Indian and European influences. The lanes of the old city begin to reveal themselves on a first walk through the waterfront quarter, a strong opening to the zanzibar safari tour island chapter.

Sansibar Küste

Stone Town – Spice Tour

The morning begins with a city walk through Stone Town, taking in the famous sights including the birthplace of Freddie Mercury, before the group transfers to the beach base for the next two nights. En route, a guided spice tour passes through villages and working plantations where you watch workers harvest cloves, nutmeg and cinnamon and can buy fresh spices directly from the farms — a sharp, fragrant close to the malawi tours and safaris overland arc.

Strände von Sansibar

Zanzibar – Free Beach Day

A full free day on Zanzibar's white-sand beaches gives you the choice of water sports, snorkeling, boat trips or simply resting under the palms. The Indian Ocean here is calm and clear, offering ideal conditions for swimming. Whatever the activity, today is yours to shape — the island's pace and variety of options make it a natural reward at the end of this victoria falls tour to Zanzibar route.

Stone Town (Zanzibar)

Zanzibar – Dar es Salaam

After a final breakfast together, the group says farewell and transfers back to Stone Town for the return ferry to Dar es Salaam, where this east africa overland tour concludes on arrival. Onward arrangements or extended accommodation in Dar es Salaam can be arranged through Overcross for those continuing their travels in the region.
