The cityscape captivates with fascinating contrasts between historical and modern buildings, and in many places, magnificent structures remind of the former glory when Uruguay was known as the "Switzerland of South America." The city exudes a distinctive melancholic charm that enchants visitors. While the tango has been revived as a tourist attraction in the neighboring city of Buenos Aires, it simply continues in Montevideo and can still be found today in authentic, rustic bars and cafés.
