MOTORCYCLE-TOURS · KYRGYZSTAN
A 15-day guided motorcycle tour along the Pamir Highway through Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan. Starting and ending in Osh, you ride a Honda CRF 250L with an English-speaking guide on the bike and a support vehicle behind you.
The Journey
The Pamir Highway doesn't look like much on a map — a thin line through the roof of the world, flanked by Afghanistan and China. On the ground it's different. You ride through river gorges barely wider than a truck, past yak herds on a 13,000 ft plateau, across passes where the only traffic is a Chinese freight vehicle.
The landscape keeps shifting: green Kyrgyz valleys give way to the dry Pamir Plateau; the Wakhan narrows until Afghan villages on the far bank look close enough to shout across. Nights in hotels, homestays, and yurts. The homestays are the best part of the trip.
Kyrgyzstan
Osh anchors both ends of the route. The Kyrgyz sections bookend the trip — green valleys and a warm-up day in the south, then the high-altitude return through the Kyzyl-Art Pass and a stop at the Pik Lenin base camp.
You land in Osh, Kyrgyzstan's second-largest city. After pickup and a few hours to settle in, the afternoon is a short orientation ride outside the city — your first time on the CRF 250L. Overnight in Osh.
Today's loop (about 93 miles / 150 km) takes you north to the Papan Lake reservoir on unpaved gravel roads through a green valley, then over a pass south of the city. The afternoon returns to Osh on better-paved road. A manageable day to dial in the bike before the route heads south.
Tajikistan
Tajikistan holds the heart of this tour. The route crosses from the Fergana lowlands through Dushanbe and Kalaikum before climbing to the Wakhan Valley and the Pamir Plateau. The M41 runs along two international borders and stays remote throughout.
A long day through the Kyrgyz Fergana Valley and across the border into Tajikistan. The landscape is flat and agricultural — Central Asian towns and roadside bazaars at intervals. By evening you reach Khujand and check into the hotel.
You leave the Fergana Valley and climb over a major pass on a good road, then drop into a deep gorge before the turn-off to Lake Iskander. The track to the lake switches back on a natural road — reduce speed and take it steady. Overnight directly on the turquoise shore.
The day's route crosses a pass above 9,800 ft (3,000 m) while the support vehicle takes the Anzob tunnel below. You have the pass road to yourself — all traffic funnels through the tunnel. Dushanbe by evening, hotel overnight.
Two route options today: the southern winter road or the M41 approach on rougher mountain tracks with stream interruptions. The group takes the more challenging line where conditions allow. Overnight in a homestay — dinner with a Tajik family, a first look at local daily life.
The Panj River runs alongside you for most of the day. The road and river wind through a tight rock gorge; Afghan villages sit on the opposite bank within a few hundred yards. Khorog is a university town — the hotel is comfortable and dinner is a step up from the homestay.
The route follows the Wakhan Valley east along the Afghan border until Bibi Fatima. The Wakhan population is ethnically and linguistically distinct from the Tajiks — a noticeable shift on the ground. At Bibi Fatima, a natural hot spring sits in a rock grotto at over 104°F (40°C). Use it. Overnight at the spring.
Questions about the tour itinerary?
Our tour guide is happy to answer any questions about the day-by-day route, stops, and details.
The air gets thinner as the road climbs onto the plateau. Wild camels, yaks, and scattered shepherds replace traffic. Overnight in a homestay near Lake Bulunkul — time to visit the hot springs and a small natural geyser nearby.
You're on the Pamir Highway proper — the road the Soviets built along the Afghan and Chinese borders. Four passes above 13,000 ft (4,000 m) today, with Ak-Baital at 15,272 ft (4,655 m) the highest point of the entire tour. Murgab overnight, hotel, hot shower.
The route continues to Karakul Lake for an overnight on the shore. The following morning you cross the Kyzyl-Art Pass at 13,780 ft (4,200 m) — the last major climb and the border back into Kyrgyzstan.
Kyrgyzstan — Return
Osh anchors the return. The final Kyrgyz stage brings a detour to the Pik Lenin base camp before the last ride back through dramatically different terrain — colorful rock formations replacing the stark plateau.
Before the final stretch to Osh, a detour to the Pik Lenin base camp at over 11,480 ft (3,500 m). Clear weather brings a full view of the peak. Then south to Osh for the night.
The last 155 miles (250 km) into Osh run through a different landscape — colorful rock formations and shifting vegetation after the stark plateau. A good final riding day before the route closes.
A free day in Osh. Time for a walk through the old bazaar, a visit to Sulayman Mountain, or a slow morning before the group dinner.
Early transfer to the airport. End of tour.
