The Journey

Offroad-Enduro adventure: motorcycle tour Crete between gorges & mountain trails

Before we dive into the tracks, gorges, and elevation gains of your motorcycle tour Crete, here are the most important facts and points: compact, clear, and as precise as a good enduro tour must be.

Tour Character & Terrain

  • Off-road-oriented motorcycle tour Crete with a high proportion of gravel and natural trails

  • Varied mix of single trails, mountain tracks, coastal paths, and old mule paths

  • Typical surfaces: loose rock, gravel, stony serpentines, forest tracks

  • Ideal for experienced riders with a solid off-road background; no hard enduro

Regions & Highlights

  • Lefka Ori / White Mountains: gravel tracks up to approximately 1,800-2,000 m

  • South Coast Sfakia: off-road tracks above the Libyan Sea

  • Omalos and Askifou Plateau: vast panoramas & flow passages

  • Kallikratis Pass: spectacular serpentines, narrow gravel, stunning views

  • Lasithi Plateau & mountain villages: traditional villages, windmills, olive groves

  • Gorges & canyons: narrow passages, ancient stone paths, Mediterranean vegetation

Riding Profile & Daily Stages

  • 90-150 km per riding day, depending on the group & weather

  • Off-road proportion 60-80 % (adjustable by guides)

  • Regular elevation gains between 1,000-2,000 m several times daily

  • Approximate riding time: 5-7 hours per day including breaks

  • Challenge: medium to demanding, lots of standing riding and cornering techniques

Accommodation & Comfort

  • Hotel-based star tour: one location, no daily hotel changes

  • Daily riding with light day luggage

  • Local restaurants & taverns with Cretan cuisine (grilled, fresh herbs, seafood)

  • Rest breaks by the sea possible

Motorcycles & Technology

  • Own enduro possible or rental enduro on site (powerful travel enduros)

  • Tires: 50/50 to 70/30 recommended

  • Tools & breakdown assistance by the guides

  • Terrain requires safe handling on loose surfaces

Guide & Group

  • Experienced German-speaking guides with knowledge of Crete off-road

  • Small groups for maximum safety & individual pace

  • Flexible route choice based on riding level

Climate & Season

  • Best travel time: March-June & September-November

  • Spring: green mountains, mild temperatures, little dust

  • Autumn: dry tracks, stable weather, perfect visibility

  • Summer heat is avoided - too warm for real off-road performance

Culture & Landscape

  • Pristine mountain villages, orthodox chapels, ancient donkey paths

  • Goat herds, scent of herbs (thyme, oregano), wild mountains

  • Crete pure, far away from package tourism

All these facts show what to expect on the motorcycle tour Crete, but only on the route will it become clear how intense this island really is on two wheels. Time for the next step: the experience in detail.

Arrival in Crete & Acclimatization in Matala

At Heraklion Airport, the guide greets you before heading through the hinterland to Matala - a place that, with its rock caves and quiet bay, perfectly tunes you in for your motorcycle tour of Crete.

After check-in, there is time to inspect the machines and get to know the group. In the evening, we sit in a small tavern right by the sea, as the sun sinks behind the rocks. A calm start before the dusty roads of the coming days call.

Warm-up, gravel tracks & Kefali-Bathi

After the briefing and bike setup, we roll out: first gravel roads, simple trails, and short technical sections, ideal for getting into the rhythm of the island.

The route leads through olive groves and over gentle hills to the region around Kefali-Bathi - a remote area where Crete still appears wild and unspoiled.

Anyone who likes can visit an old monastery that stands lonely on a rocky plateau. Back in Matala, Mediterranean cuisine awaits, along with a first glimpse of the upcoming off-road stages.

Coastal route to Kali Limenes & Lentas

Today, the group follows one of the most spectacular coastal passages of the motorcycle tour Crete. Narrow paths wind their way over cliffs and rock bands, with views constantly falling on the Libyan Sea.

In a hidden bay, we take a break - swimming is expressly permitted. We continue over old shepherd paths to Lentas and through small settlements back towards Matala. A day full of panorama, heat, salty air, and the feeling of freedom.

Mountain Villages, Herbal Scent & Zaros Region

The route takes us deeper into the Cretan mountains today. Behind Kamares begins a network of gravel roads leading through scattered villages and wide plains.

In traditional kafenions, we strengthen ourselves with Cretan mountain tea or a small meze. The roads are winding, the air smells of thyme, and views of the southern slopes repeatedly open up.

The mix of relaxed off-road passages and cultural moments makes this day particularly intense.

South Coast, Agios Pavlos & hidden coves

We follow the trail along the south coast: lonely pebble coves, rock plateaus, and narrow paths that run right above the sea.

A detour takes us to Agios Pavlos - a remote, windswept coastal village. Along the way, we pass small fishing villages and finally reach a hidden cove that is only accessible via a short gravel path.

The afternoon belongs to driving: dusty, rhythmic tracks with sea views. In the evening, we enjoy Cretan specialties and stories of the day.

Motorradreisen Griechenland Entdeckungstour traditionelle Kaffeetaverne

Messara Plain & Off-road passage to Tripiti

Today's kilometers lead initially relaxed through the wide Messara plain before we ascend into the mountains. The paths become narrower, the ground rockier.

A winding section towards Tripiti requires attention – but rewards with views that extend far over the southern coast. A short stop at a small village tavern provides insight into the true country life of Crete.

Afterwards follows a mix of flowing mountain paths and off-road sections back towards Matala.

Motorradreisen Griechenland Matala Freiheit Erlebnisse

Free day in Matala: Culture, sea or off-road light

This day belongs to you. Some relax on the beach or stroll through the caves of Matala.

Others take a short optional ride, visit markets, or enjoy the cuisine in the taverns. A small boat tour along the coast can be organized optionally - perfect for discovering hidden caves and bays.

A quiet conclusion before the journey home begins tomorrow.

  • 7 overnight stays in a 3* hotel in Matala with breakfast (only Sunday to Sunday included)
  • 5 full-day motorcycle tours
  • Rental enduros 200ccm to 500ccm (larger enduros for an additional fee; tip: smaller and lighter enduros are better suited for Crete)
  • Professional German- and Greek-speaking tour guide
  • For beginners motorcycle training before the tour begins
  • Comprehensive insurance with a deductible of 500.00 €
  • Airport transfer from Heraklion to the hotel and back (included only on the first and last tour day! For an additional fee of 70€, also available on other days)
  • Travel security certificate (insolvency protection according to BGB §651r) is mandatory for all OVERCROSS trips.
  • Rental enduros between 200cc and 500cc (larger models available for a surcharge).
  • Seven overnight stays, breakfast, five full-day motorcycle tours, rental enduro, insurance, and tour guide.
  • The motorcycle tour of Crete is suitable for beginners with solid riding experience and for advanced riders. You will travel a lot of gravel, serpentine roads, and rocky coastal paths. Fitness and concentration are important, but it is not a hard enduro.
  • Depending on the group, the off-road percentage roughly ranges between 60 and 80 percent. The motorcycle tour of Crete uses gravel roads, field paths, and mountain trails; asphalt mainly serves as a connection between the off-road sections.
  • Crete combines high mountains, coastal cliffs, gorges, plains, and olive groves in a very compact space. This makes each stage feel different, from alpine character to coastal flow, and the island feels like a small continent for enduro riders.
  • In spring and autumn, the temperatures are usually ideal at 18-26 °C with pleasant air. In summer, it can get significantly hotter, especially in the south. Tours also take place during the summer months, then with adjusted break and start times.
  • Enduro helmet, protective jacket, gloves, boots, and ventilated motorcycle clothing are mandatory. A hydration bladder, sunscreen, lightweight rain jacket, and possibly knee protectors make the motorcycle tour of Crete significantly more comfortable and safer.
  • Expect about 90-150 kilometers per day and 5-7 riding hours including breaks. The daily performance is determined less by the kilometers than by the terrain, elevation gain, and photo stops.
  • The motorcycle tour of Crete is organized as a star tour with a fixed hotel base in Matala. All off-road days start and end from there - so you ride with light daily luggage and have a constant retreat by the sea.
  • Rain or wind can make gravel and mountain paths more challenging. The guides then adjust the route so that the motorcycle tour of Crete remains safe, yet still exciting and varied.
  • Many of the exciting paths are unmarked, seasonally tricky, or only known locally. A guide knows legal routes, weather windows, and alternative paths - this makes the motorcycle tour of Crete safer, more efficient, and significantly more intense than alone with a GPS.
