Days 1–16
Victoriafällen

Lusaka

Early in the Zambian side of the Victoria Falls, we catch a last glimpse of the mighty falls before we embark on a long travel day. We get our first impressions of East Africa through the window of our truck: colorful markets, bustling villages, and rural scenes form the backdrop of our journey as we drive through Zambia. We enjoy a prepared meal upon our arrival, while our guides inform us about the coming days.

Mto wa Mbu Market im Dorf Mto

Petauke

This morning we drive through the bustling capital Lusaka in Zambia before we turn east towards Petauke, our destination for the night. As an important link between Lusaka and neighboring Malawi, the Great East Road winds through rural Zambia, and we will cross the mighty Luangwa River on the way. Dotted with villages and subsistence farms, today’s landscapes serve as a stark contrast to the developed countries many of us call home. We make a pleasant stop at the Luangwa Market, a busy hub where local Zambian vendors showcase their goods. Among the treasures on display are masau and masaku, delicious fruits available year-round and known for their heavenly taste. In addition, other African curiosities catch our eye, from charming miniature hippos to intricately woven baskets and papyrus rugs that expand the colorful tapestry of this vibrant market.

Luangwa Nationalpark

South Luangwa National Park

We look forward to the tranquility of South Luangwa and this morning we are making our way to the banks of the Luangwa River. We stop at Mulberry Mongoose to view their local jewelry and curiosities, these accessories are handcrafted by local ladies from South Luangwa using organic materials from the African bush. The Chipata region is a significant producer of cotton and we get a sense of the creativity of African culture. One of the most beautiful sunsets is certainly the one you can enjoy on the banks of the Luangwa River, so grab a cold drink and watch the day come to an end.

Luangwa Fluss

South Luangwa National Park, Day 4

South Luangwa National Park is a top-class safari destination and we have a full day to explore the park in search of the diversity of wildlife found there. This morning you can participate in an optional morning safari or during the dry season (April to December) you can take part in one of the iconic walking safaris in the park. This afternoon we will enjoy a sunset drive in the park, including a stop for a sundowner. The unique opportunity to explore the park at night gives us the chance to discover the elusive nocturnal species that are rarely seen during the day.

Lake Malawi

This morning we get into our truck and set off for Malawi, the warm heart of Africa. Our destination for the night is the shores of Lake Malawi, the southernmost lake in the East African Rift system. As one of the ten largest lakes in the world, the lake stretches over 500 km along Malawi's western border and is home to more fish species than any other lake. We spend the night on the shores of the lake, this natural wonder.

Lake Malawi

Lake Malawi

Today is all about the lake, and this day is meant for you to relax by the lake. Take the time to read a book, enjoy the sun, or delight in the many attractions that are offered. If you wish, an optional hike with a local guide to the nearby Dwanbazi waterfall can be taken. The waterfall, which is only a 30-minute drive from the Nglala Beach Hotel, offers a breathtaking panorama from the top. Depending on the weather, we may even have the opportunity to swim in the crystal-clear waters, surrounded by the lush vegetation and the natural splendor of the surrounding landscape.

Lake Malawi

Today we are on the road for most of the day again and are traveling further north. We will once again spend the night on the shores of Lake Malawi. Our guide will accompany us in the afternoon on a village tour of a nearby village. After the tour, we will enjoy the sunset over the lake from the beach.

Days 8 – Mbeya

We are setting off this morning and heading north, towards the Utengule Coffee Lodge, where we will be spending the night.

Mikumi

This morning we end our journey at the doorstep of Mikumi National Park. We make a brief stop in Baobab Valley, Tanzania.
